Randa Haines directed this dance drama, focusing on young Cuban Rafael Infante (Latino singer Chayanne) after the death of his mother. Rafael leaves Cuba for Houston, where he meets his father John Burnett (Kris Kristofferson) for the first time. Burnette is unaware that the young man is his son, and Rafael can't figure out how to tell him. Rafael's mother was a singer on cruise ships where Burnett was a dance instructor. Burnett owns the Excelsior Dance Studio, and he gives Rafael a handyman job there, where he meets and falls for the Ruby (Vanessa L. Williams) a beautiful professional dancer. With the Las Vegas World Open Dance competition in a few weeks, dancers work on their routines, and Ruby aims for the Vegas prize. Rafael partners with Patricia (Jane Krakowski) after Burnett loses interest in the competition, and Ruby dances with her brutish ex-boyfriend, the father of her young son. Then it's on to Vegas. Our dancing teacher recommended this film for all students of Latin dance. Absolutely the best dance movie (save All That Jazz) I've ever seen. Good story also. Incredible camera work, particularly in the dance club scene. You feel like you are there.

Other than the obvious....How cute Chayanne is and the fancy moves on the floor. This movie had the best dance scenes ever!! I wanted to see move involvement with Vanessa and Chayanne characters but I understand this was one of his first American movies, but it made up with the dance scenes...Vanessa did very well with her dancing in this movie she came across as very believable. The music was great too....wish I could find the soundtrack for this movie...A must see for those who love the art of ballroom dancing!!!

OK, I'll admit it...I only wanted to see this movie because I think Vanessa Williams and Chayanne are two gorgeous people...and they are, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie is. The plot is simple and nothing original but the acting is superb and the dancing...WOW. Exciting, romantic, entertaining and sweet. There is no nudity or provocative sex, although it's probably one of the sexiest movies because of it. Vanessa and Chayanne have excellent chemistry, Jane Krawkowski's dance with Chayanne near the end is stunning and probably the highest complement, I could pay is that I felt good and genuinely touched by the performances and the story. If you understand the language of dance and any sensitivity to real, sometimes unspoken emotion, then you'll enjoy this film!
