Just when you thought the game was over, along comes the second movie inspired by the popular video game Mortal Kombat. While Liu Kang (Robin Shou) led his warriors Princess Kitana (Talisa Soto), Sonya Blade (Sandra Hess), Rayden (James Remar), and Johnny Cage (Chris Conrad) to victory, and the safety of the world seemed certain, no one counted on the treachery of Shao-Kahn (Brian Thompson), the evil Emperor of the Outerworld, who has a new plan to overtake the Earth. Shao-Kahn has discovered a portal between Earth and Outerworld, and if it stays open for seven days, the two worlds will merge, with Shao-Kahn controlling both planets. Rayden and Sonya set out to find his colleague Jax (Lynn Red Williams), while Liu Kang and Kitana are on the trail of Nightwolf (Litefoot) as they race against time to defeat Shao-Kahn, who has brought Kitana's mother Queen Sindel (Musetta Vander) back from the grave to aid his evil scheme. Mortal Kombat II: Annihilation marked the directorial debut of cinematographer John R. Leonetti. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Martial arts scenes were OK. Costumes and special effects were very cheesy. Good soundtrack is about all this film has going for it.

SPOILERS! - If you liked MK1 cuz its live action Mortal Kombat, you can appreciate MK2. Slower, duller, cheaper with recasts. 1 actor was too expensive, so they die early. More ninja colors like Rain, Smoke, Cyrax, Jade and the sets are amazing again. Effects are little lacking, but not always. You don't have to use your imagination too much, it's MK anyways. Decent character changes surprises along the way, as in character growth and plot twists. James Remar is well miscast as a Christopher Lambert replacement, but decent as his own American Rayden(though Lambert's non-specifically foreign accent made little sense as the Thunder God. Lynn Red Williams has a few rediculous comic relief lines that go no where, but not too bad.

An awful, thrown-together production, and a clear case of someone being handed $30 million and having no idea how to use it. The costumes are cosplay-level. The script is muddled, underdeveloped, and confusing. The acting is almost universally horrible. And the special effects are clearly unfinished. It's like watching the last work print of a movie made before someone realized it was too terrible to finish and release.
