Embryo (1976)

"Embryo" is a 1976 sci-fi thriller involving the artificial incubation of a female human fetus which is rapidly aged into a beautiful 25-year-old woman. Prior to stem cell manipulation, the idea has merit as a creative concept for film, but unsurprisingly it is poorly executed, in spite of a good cast, including Diane Ladd, Rock Hudson and Barbara Carrera. The film is badly paced and has the product values of a mid-Seventies TV movie, not a mid-Seventies feature film. Perhaps the film's greatest drawback is that the film stock itself is atrocious. The film is slightly blurred and the horribly dim lighting renders many scenes barely visible. Again, the film has an interesting premise. Were it handled properly (which wouldn't be easy), this film might be a good candidate for a re-make. After all, if we're going to re-make films, it should be ones like this and not the good ones!

I give the story and movie 3.5 stars. I especially love Barbara Carrera!. However, the quality of the DVD looks like a home movie (VHS 6 hour speed). Really fuzzy!
