Add The Office: Season 01 to Queue Add The Office: Season 01 to top of Queue
The American TV version of the award-winning British sitcom The Office opens by establishing its faux documentary format, as Michael Scott (Steve Carell), regional manager of a branch office of Dunder-Mifflin Paper, jumps through hoops to convince the filmmakers that he presides over a happy, well-running ship. This is but one of Michael's many pathetic self-delusions: he also thinks he's the epitome of "cool," he's convinced that everything he says is a laugh riot, and even worse, he actually labors under the misapprehension that he is qualified for his job. Meanwhile, Dunder Mifflin's employees inadvertently but efficiently put the lie to Michael's self-serving prevarications: sales rep Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) continually cooks up methods to undermine his hated cube-mate, the obnoxious know-it-all Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson); receptionist Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) continually deals with Michael's insensitivities and flubs; and office temp Ryan Howard (B.J. Novak) acts mostly as an observer of the insanity around him. Some of the episodes in The Office's six-episode trial run carried over general plot ideas from the earlier British series, particularly the threat of wholesale downsizing that weaves through the various plots and subplots; however, only the pilot was a direct adaptation of one of the U.K. version's episodes. ~ Rovi

Add Law & Order: Season 03 to Queue Add Law & Order: Season 03 to top of Queue
Another major casting change occurred during the third season of Law & Order, although not until the series had offered eight episodes. In "Prince of Darkness," an undercover police operation goes tragically awry, and Detective Phil Ceretta (Paul Sorvino) ends up seriously wounded. Though Ceretta would recover sufficiently to take up a desk job, Sorvino himself decided to leave the series for good; like George Dzundza before him, the actor felt that the series' format was too confining for his talents. Brought in as Mike Logan's (Chris Noth) new partner was Jerry Orbach as laconic veteran detective Lennie Briscoe, a recovering alcoholic with a multitude of family problems (which, in fine old Law & Order tradition, were only revealed to the audience on a "need to know" basis). At the time Orbach joined the series, there was much speculation (usually tongue-in-cheek in nature) as to how long it would be before he, too, was shot down in the line of duty, just like Logan's two previous partners, Greevey and Ceretta. As it turned out, Orbach not only outlasted Noth as Logan, but by season 13, he had been on the series longer than any other regular. A few stylistic changes marked season three. The "street action" was more or less cut to the bone, as was the background music. Also, in answer to viewer demand, the handheld camerawork became more steady and less distracting. One thing still remained constant from season one: the series' lack of regular female characters. At least Carolyn McCormick, in the recurring role of police psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Olivet, was spotlighted in the compelling episode "Helpless." Once again, Law & Order was honored with several Emmy nominations during the 1992-1993 season. This time out, the series copped the Emmy twice, for Elaine Stritch's guest-star turn in "Point of View" and for Constantine Makris' photography. Ratings remained steady, if not spectacular, but things would change dramatically during the next season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Add Scrubs: Season 01 to Queue Add Scrubs: Season 01 to top of Queue
Season one of the NBC hospital "dramedy" Scrubs gets underway with Dr. J.D. Dorian's (Zach Braff) first day as an intern at Sacred Heart Hospital, with his best friend and roommate, Dr. Chris Turk (Donald Faison), at his side. Nicknamed "Bambi" by the Sacred Heart nurses because of his wide-eyed naïveté, J.D. takes his orders from the deceptively avuncular chief of medicine, Dr. Robert Kelso (Ken Jenkins), and from the loud, obnoxious, and highly contrary Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley). J.D. is enamored of sexy Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), and it is with brassy "mother hen" nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes) that Turk has a serious hospital romance. The scrubs' first year on the job is festooned with a variety of sobering experiences, ranging from sudden and unexpected death to nuisance lawsuits. Also, J.D. launches his ongoing war of nerves with Sacred Heart's caustic janitor (Neil Flynn), a man of many mysteries and eccentricties. Along the way, J.D. has a brief fling with hospital board member Jordan Sullivan (Christa Miller), who, unfortunately for him, turns out to be the combustible Dr. Cox's ex-wife. And on a happier note, J.D.'s dream of getting Elliott in the sack finally comes true...but be careful what you wish for. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Add ER: Season 03 to Queue Add ER: Season 03 to top of Queue
Season three of ER marks the (temporary) exit of Chicago County emergency-room doctor Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield), whose ever-increasing emotional problems are exacerbated when her romance with Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) fails to take off. It also marks the begining of John Carter's (Noah Wyle) medical career, as he starts off the season now a doctor, but still low on the food chain as a first-year intern. New to the series this season are head of surgery Dr. Donald Anspaugh (John Aylward), pediatrician Dr. Abby Keaton (Glenne Headley), and oversensitive intern Dr. Dennis Gant (Omar Epps), who, unable to withstand the incessant hectoring of hard-driving supervisor Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle), commits suicide. Benton has problems on other fronts as well: Dr. Keaton dismisses him from the prestigious pediatrics team; his current girlfriend, Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Reuben), is diagnosed as HIV-positive; and his former sweetheart Carla Reese (Lisa Nicole Carson) prematurely delivers Benton's baby son, who is born deaf. Elsewhere, womanizing Dr. Ross (George Clooney) has another scandal on his hands when his latest one-night stand (whose name he doesn't even know) drops dead; unfortunately, his attempt to redeem himself by rescuing a 14-year-old prostitute from a life on the streets ends disastrously as well. Long-suffering Head Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) is torn between staying in her current job and entering med school. And newly divorced Dr. Greene nervously re-enters the dating scene, even while his ongoing war of nerves with the abrasive Dr. Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes) intensifies. As the season rushes to a climax, Greene is accused of allowing a black patient to die while caring for a white patient -- and shortly afterward, he is severely beaten by an unknown assailant. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

H.G. Bissinger's best-selling true-life account of a few months in the life of a high-school football team comes to the screen in this adaptation written and directed by Peter Berg. Odessa, TX, is an oil town in the western part of the state that's home to the Permian High School Panthers, the football team with the best winning record in the state. Odessa is a town with more than its share of problems; the decline of the oil business in Texas has set the city's economy into a tailspin, and racial tensions still erupt into violence on occasion. But football is the one thing that brings all the people of Odessa together, and on Friday nights every fall, as many as 20,000 people fill Permian's football stadium to watch Coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) and his boys try to lead the team to victory. As Gaines works to build a winning team in a town where victory is prized above all else, however, his players struggle through the emotional trials common to any teenager and ponder the fact that there is little future in their hometown...and that a championship season can be as much a burden as a triumph. Friday Night Lights also stars Lucas Black, Derek Luke, Jay Hernandez, and country singer-turned-actor Tim McGraw. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Despite having relocated to Florida, Dawn (Lucy Davis) and her fiancé, Lee (Joel Beckett), agree to return to the old office to take part in a documentary about the annual end-of-the-year office bash, and it appears as if the hapless Tim (Martin Freeman) may finally be near the end of his rope. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Add Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Season 05 to Queue Add Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Season 05 to top of Queue
The SVU unit is confronted with a murder case yielding too many suspects and too many confessions in "Tragedy," the opening episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's fifth season. Things take a truly disturbing turn a few episodes later in "Loss," wherein Assistant DA Alexandra Cabot's (Stephanie March) relentless prosecution of a murder tied in with a Colombian drug cartel results in her death -- or so it appears to the world. The next episode, "Serendipity," introduces Diane Neal as Cabot's replacement, ADA Casey Novak, who immediately develops an adversarial relationship with detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler (Christopher Meloni). Novak's professional zeal is admirable, but she proves to have as many human flaws as anyone else in the series -- notably in the season finale, "Head," in which she lives to regret allowing a child molester to cop a plea and win a lighter sentence. Season five marks the series' 100th episode, "Control," about a mutilation victim who turns out to be a sexual predator and kidnapper -- leading to Benson being raked over the coals in court because she'd refused to heed the warnings of one of the predator's potential captives. Benson is also the focus of attention in "Escape"; trying to defuse a hostage situation involving an escaped convicted pedophile, the detective ends up concluding that the man was the innocent victim of widespread political and departmental corruption. In a similar vein, the SVU unit's skipper, Captain Cragen (Dann Florek), faces the grim possibility that he may have unwittingly railroaded a guiltless criminology professor on a rape-murder charge in the episode "Criminal." And like Cragen, Det. Munch (Richard Belzer) is forced to confront the demons of his own past while handling an assisted-suicide case in "Painless." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Add The Apprentice: Season 01 to Queue Add The Apprentice: Season 01 to top of Queue
The first season of The Apprentice finds the series' host, billionaire real-estate entrepreneur Donald Trump, presiding over two teams of budding apprentices, each consisting of eight contestants. The teams are divided along gender lines, with the male players comprising the "Versacom" corporation, and the women making up the "Protégé" corporation. For their first assignment, the teams literally start at the bottom, ordered to sell lemonade on the streets. As the season progresses, the assignments become increasingly prestigious and challenging: managing an A-list restaurant, trading in a flea market, operating a fundraising concern, renovating real-estate properties, marketing a new product, art dealing, enticing gamblers to attend The Donald's Taj Mahal casino, and the like. Of course, each episode ends with Trump barking "You're fired!" to the least successful player; those who make the final cut are seen going on a round robin of job interviews within Trump's inner circle of friends and business associates. Although she isn't the final winner, Protégé's Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth emerges as the most famous contestant of season one -- or perhaps "infamous" would be a better word, given her terrifying temperamental outbursts, her blood feuds with the other players, and her (to put it mildly) inadequate "people skills" with potential customers. And speaking of famous, several of The Donald's high-profile celebrity acquaintances show up in the course of events, notably George Steinbrenner, Regis Philbin, Carson Daly, and Jessica Simpson. The season finale, in which the winner of the 250,000-dollar-per-year job with the Trump Organization is announced, was originally telecast live from NBC's legendary Studio 8-H. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Add Law & Order: Season 02 to Queue Add Law & Order: Season 02 to top of Queue
Not yet a hit, though certainly sustaining decent ratings, Law & Order entered its second season with the first of its many cast changes -- and a spectacular one it was indeed, with Detective Max Greevey being shot down and killed in front of his own house. In truth, George Dzundza, who played Greevey, had already left the series, so his "death" largely occurred off-camera. Reportedly, Dzundza felt that the series' format gave his character no room to grow or develop, though some reports indicate that he was asked to leave because of his inability to get along with certain other cast members. At any rate, he was replaced by Paul Sorvino as Detective Phil Ceretta, who, likewise, departed the show early on (a few weeks into season three, in fact). As was the case in the first season, the regular Law & Order cast lineup was still all male, although a few recurring female characters were given sporadic moments to shine, notably police psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Olivet, played by Carolyn McCormick. Again, viewers were given only brief and tantalizing glimpses of the off-duty lives of the detectives and lawyers, in keeping with creator Dick Wolf's edict that the show would be story-driven rather than character-driven. Having received one Emmy nomination during the 1990-1991 season (Michael Moriarty as best leading actor), Law & Order chalked up six more nominations during season two, winning the award for Best Sound Editing (David Hankins). Also, with its move from Tuesday to Wednesday evening, the series increased its viewership, though still not enough to crack the Top Ten -- or even the Top 25. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Having all but forced its CBS medical-show competition Chicago Hope off the Thursday-night schedule, NBC's ER reigned supreme as the series entered its second season. Having wrongly assumed that he would leave Chicago County after his third year of med school, John Carter (Noah Wyle) remains on staff as a surgical sub-intern, and by and by is given a promotion; later on, he follows the example of his sexually supercharged colleagues by getting involved in a romantic triangle. Carter's short-tempered supervisor, Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle), likewise enters into a relationship, with divorcée Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Reuben) -- who may or may not be entirely free of her troublesome ex, Al (Michael Beach). Left standing at altar by her fiancée at the end of season one, Head Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) falls for Ray "Shep" Shepard (Ron Eldard), a rather reckless paramedic. And Dr. Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) has become quite comfortable caring for her irresponsible sister Chloe's baby, Suzy -- until Chloe (Kathleen Wilhoite) pops up out of nowhere to demand custody. Season two marks the introduction of Laura Innes as Dr. Kerry Weaver, whose brusque, fingernails-on-the-blackboard attitude gets on everyone's nerves. In other developments, Dr. Ross (George Clooney), facing dismissal because of his maverick behavior, redeems himself by saving a boy trapped in a culvert during a torrential downpour; Shep goes over the edge when his paramedic partner is killed in a fire; and, in the season-ending cliffhanger, Benton discovers that Jeanie's former husband, Al, has infected her with the HIV virus. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
