Add Tipping the Velvet to Queue Add Tipping the Velvet to top of Queue
Originally produced in the U.K. for BBC1, where it first aired on October 9, 2002, the three-part miniseries Tipping the Velvet was adapted from Sarah Waters' best-selling debut novel of the same name. Set in the 1890s, the series focuses on the romance between Nan Astley (played by Rachel Stirling, daughter of actress Diana Rigg), a cook in the seaside restaurant owned by her father, and Kitty Butler (Keeley Hawes), a musical hall entertainer specializing in male impersonation. Given the strict (and somewhat hypocritical) moral restrictions of the Victorian era, the lesbian relationship between Nancy and Kitty must be kept a closely guarded secret, except in the hedonistic underground circles in which the actress and her libertine friends travel. Tipping the Velvet was brought to the US by way of the BBC America digital-cable service beginning May 23, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Add Cambridge Spies to Queue Add Cambridge Spies to top of Queue
Harold "Kim" Philby, Anthony Blunt, Guy Burgess, and Donald Maclean were four bright, intelligent, and ambitious young men who attended Cambridge University in the early '30s. They all seemed to have promising futures ahead of them and, indeed, all four distinguished themselves in their careers. Burgess and Maclean became respected diplomats, Philby rose to be a senior officer in British intelligence, and Blunt was a well-known art historian. But the four men shared a secret -- certain that Great Britain would fall during the Second World War, and equally convinced that Russia held the world's best and only hope of defeating the Nazi juggernaut, the students became secret agents for the KGB, the Soviet Union's intelligence force, and the former schoolmates worked together as agents for the U.S.S.R. well into the height of the Cold War -- until they were discovered in 1963. Cambridge Spies is a made-for-TV drama produced by the BBC which dramatizes the true story of these unlikely secret agents, exploring how they worked together, and what finally brought their secret lives into the spotlight. It stars Samuel West as Blunt, Toby Stephens as Philby, Tom Hollander as Burgess, and Rupert Penry-Jones as Maclean. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Add Coupling: Season 02 to Queue Add Coupling: Season 02 to top of Queue
The second season of Coupling picks up where the first left off, with sexual shenanigans providing fodder for all sorts of conceptual comedy stunts. But as creator/writer Steven Moffat makes his way through this longer, nine-episode run, his plots begin to accrue more emotional depth as his characters exhibit the humanity behind their various tics. The romance between Steve (Jack Davenport) and Susan (Sarah Alexander) continues to function as the nucleus around which the more extreme characters spin. Against all odds, Patrick (Ben Miles) and Sally (Kate Isitt) drift toward some sort of connection, while Jane (Gina Bellman) and Jeff (Richard Coyle) continue their outré antics. Eventually, even poor, bumbling Jeff finds a girlfriend of his own. Jane doesn't achieve a similar benchmark, but her shenanigans slowly reveal the loneliness underneath her outrageousness. Although some level of soap opera continuity is inevitable as a series progresses, Moffat's through-lines remain secondary to his comedic mission. When sentimentality does rear its head, it's only for a moment -- and usually just before or after a side-splitting set piece. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

Add Doctor Who: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [2 Discs] to Queue Add Doctor Who: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [2 Discs] to top of Queue
"Motorized dustbins" enslave the Earth -- it must be a Doctor Who story! The Dalek Invasion of Earth, a six-episode story from the early days of TV's longest-running sci-fi serial, features the program's first Doctor, William Hartnell. Doctor Who is a mysterious "Time Lord" who uses the TARDIS, a time-travel machine in the shape of a London police box, to navigate the fourth dimension. He arrives on 22nd-century Earth to discover that the planet has been conquered by a robot race called the Daleks. This invasion marks the Daleks' second appearance on the show, and they would quickly become Dr. Who's most popular adversaries (his Klingons, if you will). Here we also say goodbye to the Doctor's first traveling companion, his granddaughter Susan (original cast member Carol Ann Ford). This is cheesy stuff, to be sure. But the low-budget trappings, along with the compelling plots, are half the charm for fans. The other half is Hartnell; he brings Merlin-like charisma to his take on the Doctor. Made in 1964, this is classic, black-and-white Who, a perfect introduction to one of sci-fi television's most venerable institutions.

This is item 6 in The Doctor Who: The First Doctor, William Hartnell (1963-1966) Series.

The Doctor brings Leela to Victorian London to meet her ancestors (though Agincourt might have been more her style). The TARDIS materializes in the darkest heart of the city, where life - and death - is anything but dull. A hapless cabbie is slain by agents of a secret Chinese cult. Young women are disappearing at an alarming rate, and Li H'sen Chang, the Palace Theatre's celebrated magician, may know more about that than he admits. Li H'sen's ventriloquist dummy, Mr. Sin, appears to have a life of its own, and the rat problem in the sewers is bigger than anyone can imagine.

Welcome to Wernham Hogg, a suburban paper company where "life is stationery." Critics and fans alike have lauded this hilarious, biting look at everyday office life, told in the mockumentary style of cult comedy classics such as This is Spinal Tap and The Larry Sanders Show. The show revolves around David Brent, (an instant classic character widely compared to Basil Fawlty of Fawlty Towers) the oblivious general manager who instigates petty office rivalries. The wince-worthy Brent still considers himself "a friend first and a boss second...probably an entertainer third."
