No sooner have millionaire industrialist Jonathan Hart (Robert Wagner) and his journalist wife Jennifer (Stefanie Powers) have been introduced in the feature-length pilot episode of Hart to Hart than the couple is indulging in their favorite hobby, amateur sleuthing; it's all for a good cause of course, inasmuch as the Harts are hoping to solve the murder of an old friend at a so-called health spa. One week after the pilot aired on ABC, the Hart to Hart series proper got under way with its first 22 episodes. Frequently in harm's way during this inaugural season is the glamorous Jennifer Hart, who in the official season opener is targeted for death by a person claiming to be her cousin; a few weeks later, a looney lady (Kathleen Lloyd) who has long fantasized about being Jennifer decides to eliminate the "original"; and further down the line, Jennifer unwittingly signs her own death warrant when she commissions a portrait of herself. Both Jennifer and Jonathan are neck-deep in peril on several occasions, usually when they try to get away for a bit of rest and relaxation: for example, a vacation in Mexico goes sour when the Harts find themselves fugitives from both the local constabulary and a gang of drug dealers; a skiing weekend in Vail goes downhill when Jonathan and Jennifer are marked for death by electrocution; and a luxury cruise culminates with the Harts stuck in the middle of a blood feud between two rival teams of jewel thieves! And on separate occasions, an antique auto and a Buddha statue plunge the protagonists into the world of international espionage. In other adventures, the Harts adopt clever disguises to hunt down a killer of prostitutes; Madelyn Rhue guest stars as the latest girlfriend of the Harts' crusty chauffeur Max (Lionel Stander), and like most of Max's amours she turns out to be a crook; Jonathan is forced into a "duel a mort" with a sadistic fencing champ; the couple's pet dog Freeway dashes off to parts unknown with vital murder evidence clamped between his teeth; and a psychic employee of Hart industries bids fair to send Jonathan and Jennifer to the next world a bit ahead of schedule. Establishing its premise with a two-hour "TV movie" opener, Moonlighting segues swiftly into its first season, which though short (only seven episodes) is very, very sweet, especially whenever stars Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis take the viewers into their confidence to assure them that "it's only a TV show" -- and that their characters, fashion model Maddie Hayes and private eye David Addison, are fully aware that they're not real. Business at the Blue Moon Detective Agency is quite brisk if not terribly profitable during season one, beginning with David and Maddie trying to figure out how to tell their client that his long-lost son is a hired killer. In later episodes, Maddie suspects that a designer's secrets are being "telepathically" stolen; a popular talk-show host is apparently murdered in mid-broadcast; and David and Maddie dutifully notify the police that they've stumbled across a dead body, only to have the corpse disappear right under their noses. Perhaps the highlight of the season is an elaborate, inside-joke-laden spoof of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, in which David and Maddie find themselves on a train populated exclusively by suspicious-looking detective fiction stereotypes. ~ Rovi

Season Two of the lighthearted adventure-mystery series Hart to Hart opens with Jennifer Hart (Stefanie Powers, the glamorous journalist wife of millionaire industrialist Jonathan Hart (Robert Wagner), once more mired in peril when she comes to the rescue of a bride whose new husband has vanished and left both ladies at the mercy of mobsters. Then it is Jonathan's turn to look death in the face when he witnesses a murder, only to promptly develop amnesia--forcing the killer to cook up an appropriate demise for Jonathan lest his memory come back. Later, the Harts' gravel-voiced chauffeur Max (Lionel Stander), forever unlucky in matters of the heart, gets bollixed up in a sinister scheme involving a stolen necklace when his supposedly dead wife shows up hale and hearty after 10 years. And the Harts' pet dog Freeway is the unwitting catalyst of a plot revolving around a secret formula and a mad doctor. Other episode highlights this season include "This Lady is Murder", in which Jennifer is mistaken for her lookalike Dominique (also Stefanie Powers) by a gang of cutthroats; and "Murder in Paradise, wherein series star Powers is reunited with her former Girl From UNCLE vis-à-vis Noel Harrison. Robert Wagner gets to show off his versatility when he impersonates a cold-blooded hit man in "Murder is a Drag"; and both stars adopt disguises in another episode to trap a band of counterfeiters. The season ends when, while cleaning up after a robbery in their absence, Mr. and Mrs. Hart discover a hidden vault in the recesses of their home--only to be promptly sealed up inside. Only 15 episodes of Moonlighting were produced during season three, down from the previous season's 18. The series' producers and stars made no secret of the fact that the production delays were being caused by backstage personality clashes; indeed, beginning in mid-season, each episode opened with an amusing "explanation" as to why the series was yielding so few new episodes. However, those episodes that were completed remain among the series' best. Highlights include the season opener, in which private eye David Addison (Bruce Willis, who won an Emmy for his work during season three) is uncomfortably reunited with his scapegrace father (Paul Sorvino); an elaborate It's a Wonderful Life takeoff spotlighting David's partner and erstwhile girlfriend Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd), featuring Lionel Stander reprising his role as Max from the earlier detective series Hart to Hart; a hastily assembled "clip" show, produced to fill a huge production gap, in which Pierce Brosnan recreates his earlier TV character Remington Steele, and which also features "commentary" by Cybill Shepherd's former mentor (and lover) Peter Bogdanovich; the increasing prominence of Curtis Armstrong in the role of Herbert Viola, David and Maddie's nebbishy junior partner at the Blue Moon Detective Agency; another thrilling solo "caper" for the agency's flighty receptionist Agnes DiPesto (Allyce Beasley), this one set in a supposedly haunted house; and a four-part story arc in which Maddie is torn between her growing affection for David and the romantic overtures of her new suitor, yuppie Sam Crawford (Mark Harmon). The most memorable of the season's episodes is a riotous spoof of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, replete with faux Elizabethan dialogue. But the biggest event of the entire season occurs at the very end, when after three years of verbal and physical fencing, David and Maddie finally consummate their relationship. ~ Rovi

Private detective Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) continues to grit her teeth and play second fiddle to her junior partner as Remington Steele begins its second season. Although Laura is head of the Remington Steele Agency, her partner, a suave and handsome stranger with a checkered past (played by Pierce Brosnan), has taken on the name of Remington Steele (a man who doesn't exist!) to attract clients who might otherwise balk at hiring a woman for dangerous jobs. Of course, "Remington" plays his role to the hilt, even though he tends to be something of a klutz at times. Plus, our hero is never at a loss for a clever quip -- usually one stolen straight from one of the many vintage Hollywood movies that he has committed to memory. New in the second season is future Everybody Loves Raymond co-star Doris Roberts as the agency's secretary Mildred Krebs. A former IRS agent, Mildred had been fired after generously helping Remington beat a tax evasion rap. Now she is determined to get even with him simply by hanging around and making his life miserable. Missing from the action is Laura's first partner Murphy Michaels, who, after being upstaged by Remington once too often, has quit to form his own agency. The season begins with the two-part "Steele Away With Me," which at one point draws parallels between the story at hand and a typical James Bond movie (several years before Pierce Brosnan took over the role of Bond in the character's theatrical features). Later cases involve a sabotaged aircraft company, a client who doesn't know his own name, a poisoned TV dinner coming between a pair of popular commercial actors, a boxing manager who may or may not know something about Remington's murky past, the solving of a decades-old circus mishap, and a make-believe mystery that becomes all too real. Among the classic movies invoked by Remington in the course of events are Casablanca, Spellbound, Rocky, and The Greatest Show on Earth. We still haven't learned the true name of the suave private detective who calls himself Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) as the series bearing the same name enters its third season. All we know for sure is that the real brains behind the Remington Steele Detective Agency is sexy private eye Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist), who has hired "Steele" to pose as her nonexistent boss to attract clients who would otherwise be averse to hiring a woman to do their dirty work. We also know that former IRS agent Mildred Krebs (Doris Roberts) is still working as the agency's secretary in order to hassle Mr. Steele, whose questionable tax practices had cost Mildred her government job. As the season opens, it is clear that Laura has gotten over her initial dislike of Remington and is ready for romance -- but somehow or other, crime always rears its ugly head during those "special moments." This year's case load includes a mysterious person who, for unknown reasons, is trying to force Laura out of her apartment; a certain Maltese artifact that is hardly "the stuff that dreams are made of"; a comic strip artists whose creations come to murderous life; and Laura's efforts to probe the background of a politician -- while Remington tries to keep his own background under wraps. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

As Remington Steele swings into its first season, sexy private detective Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) and her nebbishy partner Murphy Michaels (James Read) are enjoying a hitherto unimagined stretch of profitability. It seems that, up until recently, Laura had been unable to convince potential clients that a woman was qualified to do confidential detective work. Thus, she invented a fictional boss, dashing international adventurer Remington Steele, naming her agency after the selfsame Steele. Though it takes some doing to deflect the curiosity of those who'd like to meet and talk with the elusive Remington, Laura's little deception is paying off in spades. Then, while trying to protect a valuable jewel shipment from thieves, Laura comes face to face with the "real" Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan), who is every bit as suave and dauntless as she had imagined him. It turns out that this charming fellow is not really Remington Steele -- remember, the character doesn't exist -- but he is willing to continue working for Laura so long as she doesn't ask him anything about his real name or background. As the weeks roll by, it is clear that Remington's coolness is mostly a façade; in fact, he is downright bumbling and dimwitted at times. Still, appearance is all that matters -- and Remington is certainly blessed in the "appearance" department. In his very first collaboration with Laura, "Remington" displays his trademarked fondness for vintage Hollywood movies by quoting a key line of dialogue from the 1956 feature Tea and Sympathy. In later escapades -- which range from industrial espionage to the murder of a seedy romance novelist -- Remington will invoke memories of such flicks as Casablanca, D.O.A., The Shining, The Third Man, Enter the Dragon, Psycho, and even It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. In a cute bit of inside casting, the episode "Sting of Steele" features Stephanie Zimbalist's real-life father, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Remington Steele's enigmatic mentor, Daniel Chalmers. Meanwhile, back in the offices of the Remington Steele Agency, hardworking secretary Bernice Foxe (Janet de May) dreams of living as exciting a life as her employers. Although fans were still addicted to the hip, kidding-on-the-square detective series Moonlighting, the series was being eroded from within by profound production problems and internal squabbles. As a result, only 13 new episodes were produced for the series' fourth season, forcing ABC to fill out the rest of the schedule with reruns. Also, tensions between series star Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd, coupled with ongoing arguments between the two leads and the series' producers, culminated with extended absences from the set and lengthy production shutdowns. In one episode, "Here's Living With You, Kid," Willis and Shepherd didn't appear at all, forcing supporting actor Curtis Armstrong, cast as junior detective Herbert Viola (a character who graduated this season from recurring to regular status), to carry the plotline by himself. Fortunately, the old spark roared into flame long enough for some top-rank episodes to be produced during season four. The opener, which occurs shortly after detective-agency partners Maddie Hayes (Shepherd) and David Addison (Willis) have finally slept together, finds the duo separately seeking out advice on their relationship from psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers and singer Ray Charles (this installment also finds time for an elaborate takeoff of The Honeymooners). In later episodes, it is revealed that Maddie is pregnant with David's baby, whereupon she gets married -- not to David, but to a total stranger named Walter Bishop (Dennis Dugan). With the two stars spending so much time on affairs of the heart, it is up to the supporting characters, notably the aforementioned Herbert Viola and detective-agency receptionist Agnes DiPesto (Allyce Beasley), to take care of the "mystery" angle; especially memorable is the episode in which Agnes' mother is inexplicably targeted for elimination after returning from a vacation. ~ Rovi

The fifth season of Moonlighting is the shortest since season one, with only 12 new episodes produced; it is also the final season, thanks to the ever-increasing backstage squabbles involving stars Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis, and virtually the entire production staff. The opening episode is one of the strangest ever conceived, beginning with an appearance by practically every member of the cast and the production team, assuring viewers that their professional problems are behind them, and promising that season five will be the best ever. The plot proper finds Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd), impregnated the previous season by her detective-agency partner David Addison (Bruce Willis), going into labor -- whereupon the action shifts to Heaven, where Maddie's baby (also played by Bruce Willis) nervously awaits to be born. Alas, it is not to be; Maddie miscarries, and subsequently buries herself in her work as a detective, neglecting not only David but also her nebbishy husband, Walter (Dennis Dugan). As for David, he philosophically moves on in his life, enjoying a brief fling with Maddie's sister Annie (Virginia Madsen). Thereafter, Moonlighting ceases to be about the Maddie-David relationship and devolves into a standard detective show, albeit punctuated every so often by the series' trademarked inside jokes and eccentric deviations from the plotlines. Inevitably, given the fact that everyone knew that this was the series' final season, Moonlighting comes to a halt as the doors of the Blue Moon Detective Agency are permanently closed. ~ Rovi

Separated from his wife Emma (Jennifer Connelly), amnesiac John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) awakens alone in a strange hotel to learn he is wanted for a series of brutal killings -- but he can't remember if he did or didn't commit these murders. Indeed, most of his memories have completely vanished, and he becomes the focus of interest for both mad genius Dr. Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland) and sympathetic detective Frank Bumstead (William Hurt). Attempting to unravel the twisted riddle of his identity, Murdoch encounters a group of ominous beings known as the Strangers, shadow-like figures who have a collective memory and possess the ability to stop time and alter physical reality through a process called The Tuning. Focusing their minds, they are able to change the size and shape of the material world. Murdoch manages to stay a step ahead of his adversaries as he slowly jigsaws together the puzzle of his past-bittersweet memories of his childhood, his love for Emma, and the key to the murders -- while following a labyrinth leading to the Strangers' Underworld, a set inspired by Fritz Lang's Metropolis. Rufus Sewell commented on the Underworld: "When Alex first sent me the sketches for that set, I was more excited than I had been when I read the script. The Underworld was truly remarkable -- a little bit scary, very thrilling, and full of hundreds of bald people." At the Fox Film Studios in Sydney, Australia, where 50 sets were built, three months were spent constructing the set for the Underworld, the largest indoor set ever built in Australia. The production design by George Liddle (Rapa Nui) and Patrick Tatopoulos (Godzilla, Space: Above and Beyond) is a composite of different styles and eras, combining the look of 1940s Manhattan with German Expressionism. Grant plays Peter Joshua, who meets Reggie Lampert (Hepburn) in Paris and later offers to help her when she discovers that her husband has been murdered. After the funeral, Reggie is summoned to the embassy and warned by agent/friend Bartholemew (Walter Matthau) that her late husband helped steal 250,000 dollars during the war and that the rest of the gang is after the money as well. When three of the men who attended her husband's funeral begin to harass her, Reggie goes to Joshua for help, at which time Joshua confesses that his name is actually Alexander Dyle, the brother of a fourth accomplice in the gold theft. The three men from the funeral are revealed to be the three other accomplices in the crime, and though she knows next to nothing of the heist, Reggie is caught in a ring of suspense as she is followed by the shadowy trio, all after the money. Apparently, the only person she can trust is Joshua/Dyle -- until Bartholomew tells Reggie that the fourth accomplice had no brother, and Joshua/Dyle reveals that he is, in fact, a crook named Adam Canfield. Rigby is a low-rent detective (his fee is $10 per day) sitting in his office, waiting for something to happen. That something happens when the voluptuous Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward) arrives in his office and faints dead away at the sight of a newspaper that reports on her father's death in a car accident. Juliet is convinced that her father was murdered and offers Rigby $200 to investigate. Upon searching Mr. Forrest's office, he comes upon a list of names under the headings "The Friends and Enemies of Carlotta." The diva of the title is a famous black opera singer (Wilhelmina Wiggins-Fernandez) who steadfastly refuses to be recorded. The singer is idolized by young French mail-carrier Jules (Frederic Andrei), who sneaks a tape recorder into the theater and records her performance. This is witnessed by a pair of Taiwanese criminals, who unlike Andrei wish to profit from the bootlegged recording. They begin to pursue the boy, as do a couple of home-grown hooligans who believe that Jules is in possession of some murder evidence. The serpentine plot leads to a warm friendship between Jules and the reclusive diva - and to a brilliantly photographed (by Philipe Rousselot) motorcycle chase through the subway tunnels of Paris. While having lunch at the Plaza Hotel in New York, advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) has the bad luck to call for a messenger just as a page goes out for a "George Kaplan." From that moment, Thornhill finds that he has stepped into a nightmare -- he is quietly abducted by a pair of armed men out of the hotel's famous Oak Room and transported to a Long Island estate; there, he is interrogated by a mysterious man (James Mason) who, believing that Roger is George Kaplan, demands to know what he knows about his business and how he has come to acquire this knowledge. Roger, who knows nothing about who any of these people are, can do nothing but deny that he is Kaplan or that he knows what they're talking about. Finally, his captors force a bottle of bourbon into Roger and put him behind the wheel of a car on a dangerous downhill stretch. Through sheer luck and the intervention of a police patrol car and its driver (John Beradino), Roger survives the ride and evades his captors, and is booked for drunk driving. He's unable to persuade the court, the county detectives, or even his own mother (Jesse Royce Landis) of the truth of his story, however -- Thornhill returns with them to the mansion where he was held, only to find any incriminating evidence cleaned up and to learn that the owner of the house is a diplomat, Lester Townsend (Philip Ober), assigned to the United Nations. He backtracks to the hotel to find the room of the real George Kaplan, only to discover that no one at the hotel has ever actually seen the man. With his kidnappers once again pursuing him, Thornhill decides to confront Townsend at the United Nations, only to discover that he knows nothing of the events on Long Island, or his house being occupied -- but before he can learn more, Townsend gets a knife in his back in full view of 50 witnesses who believe that Roger did it. Now on the run from a murder charge, complete with a photograph of him holding the weapon plastered on the front page of every newspaper in the country, Thornhill tries to escape via train -- there he meets the cooly beautiful Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint), who twice hides him from the police, once spontaneously and a second time in a more calculated rendezvous in her compartment that gets the two of them together romantically, at least for the night. By the next day, he's off following a clue to a remote rural highway, where he is attacked by an armed crop-dusting plane, one of the most famous scenes in Hitchcock's entire film output. Trouble is, Jeffries' musings just might happen to be the truth. One of Alfred Hitchcock's very best efforts, Rear Window is a crackling suspense film that also ranks with Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) as one of the movies' most trenchant dissections of voyeurism. But Grant pleads innocence, and vows to find out who's been copying his distinctive style. With the reluctant aid of detective John Williams, Grant launches his investigation by keeping tabs on the wealthiest vacationers on the Riviera. One such person is heavily bejeweled Jessie Royce Landis, who is as brash and outspoken as her daughter Grace Kelly is quiet and demure. But "still waters run deep," as they say, and soon Kelly is amorously pursuing the far-from-resistant Grant. Part of Kelly's attraction to Grant is the possibility that he is the thief; the prospect of danger really turns this gal on. Being Cary Grant, of course, he can't possibly be guilty, which is proven in due time. But by film's end, it's obvious that Kelly has fallen hard for Grant, crook or no crook. Occasionally written off as a lesser Alfred Hitchcock film (did we really need that third-act fashion show?), To Catch a Thief is actually as enjoyable and engaging now as it was 40 years ago. Though the Riviera location photography is pleasing, our favorite scene takes place in a Paramount Studios mockup of a luxury hotel suite, where Grant and Kelly make love while a fireworks display orgasmically erupts outside their window. And who could forget the scene where Jessie Royce Landis disdainfully stubs out a cigarette in an expensive plate of eggs?
