Experimental oil drilling in Mongolia stirs a nest of bloodthirsty creatures that were once thought to exist only in myth, and draws them to the surface in search of fresh victims in this made for television shocker starring Sean Patrick Flanery. In a bid to locate untapped oil deep in the earth, an American contractor in Mongolia pumps superheated water miles underground. But there's no black gold under these desolate dunes, only screaming death. A nest of Mongolian Death Worms have been slumbering beneath these sands for centuries. Now they're awake, and they're ready to feed. And by the time these monstrous, crypto zoological anomalies make their way to the surface, it may already be too late. Mankind has lost his position at the top of the food chain, because when the Mongolian Death Worm strikes, the best you can pray for is a quick death. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A genetically altered super-weapon embarks on a nightmare rampage of chaos and carnage in this campy tale of terror in the water from legendary producer Roger Corman. "S-11" was created to be the most powerful weapon in the U.S. Navy's arsenal. A horrifying hybrid of shark and octopus, it strikes with lightning speed, and incredible precision. But all hell breaks loose when the creature's creator, Genetic Scientist Nathan Sands (Eric Roberts) follows orders to stage an impromptu demonstration for his government contact, and the control device that controls the leviathan is irreparably damaged. Now free to swim the ocean and attack at will, "S-11" makes way for Puerto Vallarta and decides to turn the tables on the local sea-food lovers. With no time to lose as the uncontrollable abomination emerges from the sea to feast on terrified beachcombers, Nathan's brilliant daughter Nicole (Sara Malakul Lane) enlists the help of a hard-drinking mercenary, a fearless investigative reporter, and her easily-rattled cameraman to destroy the most powerful weapon in the history of modern warfare. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

John Ajvide Lindqvist's celebrated vampire novel makes the leap to the big screen once again with the second feature adaptation in so many years (Tomas Alfredson's critically acclaimed 2008 hit Let the Right One In, being the first). The sensitive target of vicious bullying at school, 12-year-old Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a social misfit from a broken home. By day Owen dreams about laying waste to his classroom tormentors; by night his attentions turn to his reclusive neighbors in their austere apartment complex. One evening, as Owen takes out his pent-up aggressions on a tree, his new neighbor Abby (Chloë Grace Moretz) appears over his shoulder. A young girl wise beyond her years, Abby just moved in next door to Owen with her stoic caretaker (Richard Jenkins), who seems to harbor a sinister secret. Compelled by Abby's apparent imperviousness to the harsh winter elements, her frail disposition, and the fact that she's nowhere to be found before the sun falls, Owen senses a kindred soul, and strikes up a friendship with the girl, despite her repeated attempts to maintain an emotional distance. Simultaneously, their community grows vigilant following a series of vicious murders, and Abby's caretaker vanishes without a trace. Later, as Abby begins to grow vulnerable, her bond with Owen strengthens. By the time Owen begins to suspect that his evasive new friend is something other than human, it starts to seem as if Abby could use a good friend after all. Given that his bullies are growing more emboldened by the day, so too could Owen. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Two people who barely know one another are thrown into otherworldly danger in this independent thriller. Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy) is an American photojournalist on assignment in Mexico at a time when working there has become unusually dangerous -- after a NASA space probe crash-landed not far from the American border, alien creatures that made their way into the satellite were released, and have since thrived in Northern Mexico. Now the area is regarded as an "infected zone," where the aliens (who resemble giant squids) have been contained but move about freely, sometimes attacking humans who cross their paths. While working on a project, Kaulder's publisher contacts him to ask a big favor; his daughter Samantha (Whitney Able) has been traveling outside the United States, and would appreciate an escort from Southern Mexico to California. Not wanting to anger his boss, Kaulder agrees and books passage on a ferry that travels through a safe zone. But bad timing, bad luck, and some foolish choices by Kaulder prevent him and Samantha from catching the ship, and now they have to travel through alien territory with the help of some armed guards, hoping to avoid contact with the bloodthirsty creatures. Monsters was the first feature film from special effects artist-turned-director Gareth Edwards. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Police searching for some bloodthirsty criminals instead find themselves battling the walking dead in this action-packed horror vehicle from France. Franck Jimenez (Aurelien Recoing) is a Parisian police officer dealing with the death of his partner, Mathias Rivoallan. Jimenez suspects that Rivoallan was murdered by a band of ruthless gangsters led by the Markudis Brothers, Adewale (Eriq Ebouaney) and Bola (Doudou Masta), who operate out of a decaying housing project on the outskirts of town. Rivoallan's wife is also convinced the Murkudis pulled the trigger, and so Jimenez brings together a handful of fellow cops to enact their own personal justice against the mobsters. Jimenez plans a raid on the Markudis' headquarters with the help of Aurore (Claude Perron), a female officer who'd had an affair with Rivoallan, and two other cops, Ouessem (Jean-Pierre Martins) and Tony (Antoine Oppenheim). However, when the cops launch their vigilante raid, they met with a response they never anticipated -- a pack of ravenous zombies has laid claim to the apartment block, and avenging their fallen partner takes a backseat to saving their own lives. La Horde (aka The Horde) was the first feature film from directors Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher; European cult horror auteur Xavier Gens was one of the producers. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

When a mysterious woman emerges from the earth during a church renovation, an employ of the church sets out to track her down and reveal her for what she truly is - a bloodthirsty vampire. Under a starlit sky, a woman named Laura crawls up from the mud. She's been badly beaten; her throat has been cut, and she cannot speak. With no memory of the past to guide her, she ventures out into the city in search of food and clothes. Doing her best to blend in along the way, Laura begins to see small things that jog her memory -- a historical marker here, a map there. Has she been reincarnated, or is she something beyond human? Meanwhile, perplexed church officials hire a young man named Julian to find her. Somehow, Julian seems to know more about Laura than even she does, and before long, he has deduced that she is heading to the home she used to occupy over 100 years ago. Julian claims to want to help Laura, though he could be a part of the conspiracy to kill her. As Julian, the police, and the church continue to close in on Laura, she struggles to recall her past and unlock the mystery of her existence. But time is running out fast, and should she not succeed, she may well wind up buried in the ground for another 100 years, or worse. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This gory, scary low-budget shocker from the Roger Corman stable concerns the battle over a salmon cannery in a Pacific Northwest town. Genetically treated salmon escape the plant and are eaten by coelacanths, who mutate into humanoid monsters with giant craniums and sharp claws. The creatures begin attacking teen couples, killing the boys and mating with the girls (in some pretty graphic monster-rape scenes). Eventually, a bunch of them create total pandemonium at the annual salmon festival. Barbara Peeters directs with flair, Rob Bottin's effects are nauseatingly effective, and the cast is good, especially Vic Morrow as a racist fisherman and Doug McClure as the stalwart hero. An uncompromising shockfest with enough gratuitous blood and nudity to keep fans happy, the film features an Alien-inspired shock ending which still makes viewers jump today. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi
