John Ajvide Lindqvist's celebrated vampire novel makes the leap to the big screen once again with the second feature adaptation in so many years (Tomas Alfredson's critically acclaimed 2008 hit Let the Right One In, being the first). Compelled by Abby's apparent imperviousness to the harsh winter elements, her frail disposition, and the fact that she's nowhere to be found before the sun falls, Owen senses a kindred soul, and strikes up a friendship with the girl, despite her repeated attempts to maintain an emotional distance. Simultaneously, their community grows vigilant following a series of vicious murders, and Abby's caretaker vanishes without a trace. Later, as Abby begins to grow vulnerable, her bond with Owen strengthens. By the time Owen begins to suspect that his evasive new friend is something other than human, it starts to seem as if Abby could use a good friend after all. Police searching for some bloodthirsty criminals instead find themselves battling the walking dead in this action-packed horror vehicle from France. Franck Jimenez (Aurelien Recoing) is a Parisian police officer dealing with the death of his partner, Mathias Rivoallan. Jimenez suspects that Rivoallan was murdered by a band of ruthless gangsters led by the Markudis Brothers, Adewale (Eriq Ebouaney) and Bola (Doudou Masta), who operate out of a decaying housing project on the outskirts of town. Rivoallan's wife is also convinced the Murkudis pulled the trigger, and so Jimenez brings together a handful of fellow cops to enact their own personal justice against the mobsters. Jimenez plans a raid on the Markudis' headquarters with the help of Aurore (Claude Perron), a female officer who'd had an affair with Rivoallan, and two other cops, Ouessem (Jean-Pierre Martins) and Tony (Antoine Oppenheim). However, when the cops launch their vigilante raid, they met with a response they never anticipated -- a pack of ravenous zombies has laid claim to the apartment block, and avenging their fallen partner takes a backseat to saving their own lives. When a mysterious woman emerges from the earth during a church renovation, an employ of the church sets out to track her down and reveal her for what she truly is - a bloodthirsty vampire. Under a starlit sky, a woman named Laura crawls up from the mud. She's been badly beaten; her throat has been cut, and she cannot speak. With no memory of the past to guide her, she ventures out into the city in search of food and clothes. Doing her best to blend in along the way, Laura begins to see small things that jog her memory -- a historical marker here, a map there. Has she been reincarnated, or is she something beyond human? Meanwhile, perplexed church officials hire a young man named Julian to find her. Somehow, Julian seems to know more about Laura than even she does, and before long, he has deduced that she is heading to the home she used to occupy over 100 years ago. Julian claims to want to help Laura, though he could be a part of the conspiracy to kill her. As Julian, the police, and the church continue to close in on Laura, she struggles to recall her past and unlock the mystery of her existence. Armed to the teeth and ready to die fighting, the brave quartet descends into the sewers beneath Los Angeles and begins their search for the elusive Lilith. Twenty years after a mysterious outbreak claimed the lives of everyone at the Advanced Parasitic Development at the Cuttyhunk Island Research Facility as well as most of the civilian population on the island, a woman who managed to narrowly escape infection discovers that the bug is much more resilient than scientists previously gave it credit for when she returns home to sell her parent's abandoned property. Now the parasites have evolved, and they can slip into any human orifice impossibly fast. This gory, scary low-budget shocker from the Roger Corman stable concerns the battle over a salmon cannery in a Pacific Northwest town. Genetically treated salmon escape the plant and are eaten by coelacanths, who mutate into humanoid monsters with giant craniums and sharp claws. The creatures begin attacking teen couples, killing the boys and mating with the girls (in some pretty graphic monster-rape scenes). Eventually, a bunch of them create total pandemonium at the annual salmon festival. Barbara Peeters directs with flair, Rob Bottin's effects are nauseatingly effective, and the cast is good, especially Vic Morrow as a racist fisherman and Doug McClure as the stalwart hero. An uncompromising shockfest with enough gratuitous blood and nudity to keep fans happy, the film features an Alien-inspired shock ending which still makes viewers jump today. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi
