Nova Video Library: B-29 Frozen in Time follows Darryl Greenamyer and his crew as they try to retrieve an almost intact B-29 from the Arctic Circle. The airplane crash-landed nearly 50 years earlier during a secret mission for the United States. The pilots survived the crash and were rescued, but the B-29 was left in the harsh and unforgiving climate 250 miles north of Thule, Greenland. Greenamyer, a former test pilot who set a low-altitude speed record in a jet he built from spare parts, believes that he can actually fly the plane after performing some maintenance and building a short runway. He flies in parts for the B-29 and a massive bulldozer to clear the runway, but every takeoff is dangerous in these conditions, and he and his crew have a short window for success due to the brief summer. Greenamyer also faces a limited budget and other difficult hurdles as they try to resurrect a piece of history and fly it home. ~ Thomas Carpenter, All Movie Guide

Yellowstone National Park has been a popular tourist destination since Teddy Roosevelt declared the land a nature preserve. With the amazing geysers, hot springs, picturesque mountains, and towering old growth forests, this park has everything any nature buff could want. Yellowstone is a virtual tour of this nature showcase that far exceeds any other film that has attempted to capture the splendor of this patch of heaven. Originally filmed in the IMAX format, Yellowstone (a Slingshot Entertainment release) was intended to make the viewer feel as if they were soaring up sheer cliffs and circles snow peaked mountains. With 32 minutes of visual enlightenment to behold, this film may be even better than actually standing in Yellowstone. Would you be able to climb into a geyser and see it from the inside? Would you want to actually be standing in the path of a two-ton grizzly? More than likely, no, and that is why director Kieth Merril placed the camera in these unique situations. This film is meant to thrill and educate, and to give unique perspectives that are nearly impossible for humans to achieve. ~ Ed Atkinson, All Movie Guide

When most think of Hawaii, most conjure up images of white sandy beaches teeming with buxom tourists or hula girls in grass skirts. Hidden Hawaii strays from the more narrow view of Hawaii and ventures into the shadowed treasures of the 50th state. Originally filmed in IMAX, this video is a breathtaking tour of the secrets of Hawaii. Director Robert Hillman takes the camera up the 10,000 foot cliffs (the highest sea cliffs in the world) of Haleakala Crater to witness the blooming of the silversword (a plant that only blooms once a decade) and then down 4,000 feet below the surface of the ocean to investigate a continuing volcanic eruption that has given rise to a new island, Loihi. All in all, the viewer is given a top to bottom look at the Hawaiian islands that most people never see from the beach chairs and hotel balconies. ~ Ed Atkinson, All Movie Guide

Before Slingshot Entertainment converted this film to DVD and VHS video, the only place you could see this Academy Award nominated documentary was on an IMAX screen. Though IMAX features are filmed with the intent of being shown on a specially designed screen that gives the viewer the feeling of being in the middle of the action, little has been lost in the conversion of this film. Considering the exceptional clarity of the DVD picture, if one were to have a large screen television and surround sound capability, you would still feel like you were in the middle of Alaska, frolicking with the polar bears. Alaska: Spirit of the Wild is a full immersion experience. The cameras close in on a pack of wolves as they hunt, a herd of caribou as they graze, and thunder through the tundra giving the viewer a never before seen perspective of one of the earth's most fascinating places. With narration by Charlton Heston it is no wonder this film was nominated for Best Documentary in 1998, but the real reason may be director George Casey's dazzling capture of the aurora borealis. The DVD version of this film is Internet ready for further exploration and also equipped with a menu setting that allows the viewer to skip to his/her favorite chapter (which includes the natural history of the Alaskan landscape). ~ Ed Atkinson, All Movie Guide
