Viewers can discover the art of the Romantics in volume five of a six-volume series on western art from the extraordinary use of light by English landscape artist J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) to Spain's Francisco Goya (1746-1828), whose paintings forced the viewer to face life's inhumanity, to Frenchman Theodore Gericault's (1791-1824) portraits of the mentally ill. This 50-minute program illustrates how Romanticism was a rebellion against the academic and rational thought of Neoclassicism, how the artwork from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century embodied melancholy, nostalgia, and romantic imagery with an irrational and subjective approach. ~ Brooke Hodess, All Movie Guide

Documentarian Thomas Riedelsheimer shows us Andy Goldsworthy as he creates art in natural settings using natural materials such as driftwood, ice, mud, leaves, and stones. Goldsworthy comments on his "earthworks" and occasionally responds to offscreen questions from Riedelsheimer while he painstakingly builds his outdoors sculptures. With some exceptions, such as a winding stone wall that he built in Mountainville, NY, Goldsworthy's creations are intentionally mutable works. We see how several of them fall apart, melt, or drift away due to exposure to the elements; we also see, for example, a complex structure of interconnected sticks collapse while Goldsworthy is still working on it. Riedelsheimer takes us to Goldsworthy's home in Penport, Scotland, and to a French museum, but the emphasis of the film is on observing Goldsworthy at work. ~ Todd Kristel, All Movie Guide

The art of Hilaire-Germaine-Edgar Degas is familiar to many who know of his graceful ballet dancers. He was influenced by the painters of the Renaissance period, and admired the works of the painter Jean Auguste Ingres. In this program, art scholars analyse the work of this Impressionist, who captured the dancer in motion, and produced work, done mostly in pastels, depicting ballerinas on- and off-stage, at rest, and in groups. The Impressionists: Degas effectively combines images of his art with footage of the Royal Ballet of Birmingham, England. ~ Alice Day, All Movie Guide

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a comfortable, loving family man who depicted happiness and colorful beauty in his work without it ever seeming saccharin. This video profiles the life and paintings of the amiable Renoir, who was one of the pioneers and stalwarts of what came to be labeled "impressionism." When first unveiled, this style shocked the art world, which initially refused to accept the style as high art. This program discusses how Renoir's now-famous 1876 painting Le Moulin de la Galette shook up the art establishment with its dappled lighting technique. ~ Steve Blackburn, All Movie Guide

Documentary filmmaker Ric Burns explores the life and legacy of pop art's most beloved icon with this film that seeks to illuminate the public persona and creative complexity of painter, photographer, and filmmaker Andy Warhol. Host Laurie Anderson narrates as an erudite collection of curators, critics, and biographers dispel Warhol's own self-created image as a haute couture heavyweight to offer a more intellectually minded portrait of the man who forever changed the way the world views Campbell's Soup cans. From Warhol's boyhood experiences in a Czechoslovakian community in Pittsburgh to a disheartening stint at art school and initial work as a commercial illustrator in New York, Burns' film explores every aspect of Warhol's life to offer a detailed look at the artist whose short-circuited class-jumping gave him a most unique view on contemporary culture. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
