Originally a Japan-only PS2 title, Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time brings its tactical role-playing action, ring-based weaponry, character relationships, and multiple endings to North America for the first time, complete with updated visuals for the PSP. Players take control of Crevaniel, a young man attempting to protect his world from marauding angels bent on destruction. Gamers explore towns and dungeons from an isometric perspective, forming a four-party crew from 11 different characters, and engaging in real-time battles.
In combat, players equip special rings that produce unique weapons and can be upgraded or enhanced with more than 100 types of gems. There are more than 40 different endings in Wayfarer of Time, and the conclusion players see is dependent upon the relationships they forge with other characters through conversations, going into battle, and even vacationing together. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
Konami's "Winning" soccer series makes its 2012 return to the pitch, with play enhancements that give gamers more direct control of the ball and improvements to the artificial intelligence that controls teammates and opponents. "Off the Ball Control" allows gamers to move a cursor to quickly highlight and select any team player at any time. The game's "Pass Support" is adjustable through five settings, providing computer-assisted passes or allowing complete player control of a kick's direction and velocity.
New interactions and animations and highlight the bumps and jostles as opposing players race down the field, battling for the ball. Teammates anticipate passes, accounting for movement down the field, and referees are designed to be more sensitive to the flow of the game. Following earlier games in the series, Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 includes the teams, tournaments, and athletes of the Union of European Football Associations, and features the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions. ~ T.J. Michael Jackson: The Experience is a rhythm game that has players virtually dancing along with the King of Pop, on more than a dozen of his biggest hits. Players make their character dance by tapping the PSP directional buttons in time with the music, following on-screen cues. Routines are modeled after the artist's choreography, as seen in famous music videos and live performances, using a rotoscope-style animation technique to reproduce the actual poses and postures. As players master the routine for each song, it becomes unlocked in a jukebox mode that can be accessed at any time. The game has three difficulty settings, to challenge fans of all skill levels. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide
The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest is an action role-playing game set in a colorful rendition of Middle-earth. From a third-person perspective, players take the role of the great hero, in his adventures as Strider, the Ranger of the North, through his defining moments as King in the final battle for Gondor. The hero faces Sauron's evil minions and monsters, on horseback and on foot, winning treasures and ability-boosting artifacts as he levels up. The game also features an arena mode, which allows players to test their battle skills against challenging enemies in small battlefields set around Middle-earth, with a chance to win special items that can be used in the main story mode. From mission to mission, the game's plot unfolds in the recollections of the hobbit Samwise Gamgee, who recalls the great adventures of Aragorn and the War of the Ring for his family in a campfire story. ~ T.J. Sony's whimsical Hot Shots series returns to PSP with rackets instead of clubs. Featuring the same childlike characters and customization found in Hot Shots Golf, Hot Shots Tennis includes doubles and singles play on a variety of court surfaces. A career-style progression system will have you roaming around a tennis academy in between matches as you work on perfecting your swing and fulfilling story-oriented objectives. Konami's Metal Gear Solid franchise continues with this exclusive PSP release, the first on the handheld to be designed and written by series creator Hideo Kojima. The '70s-era storyline focuses on "Naked Snake" and the mercenary-type soldiers under his command. Snake's soldiers are pressed into action when a mysterious, hostile force threatens Costa Rica's peaceful existence. While players will once again rely on stealth to accomplish mission objectives, Peace Walker borrows elements from other genres as well, from the tactics used in real-time strategy games to the character customization found in action role-playing titles.
In addition to the single-player campaign, Peace Walker includes cooperative multiplayer support for up to four soldiers. Key features within multiplayer games include the Co-op Ring and Snake Formation. In the former, players can freely share items, equipment, and even life gauges as they work together to complete various challenges. The latter has one player taking on a commanding role as the rest of the squad focuses on defensive maneuvers. Throughout the game, adversaries can be knocked out and transported to a main base, where you'll be able to gradually expand your team's capabilities using shared resources. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide
Sony's twisted take on "capture-the-flag" multiplayer action makes its way to the PSP with all the original maps and six new battlefields in Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake. Players once again put on different hats to switch between the five character classes -- Worker, Warrior, Ranger, Mage, and Priest -- in an attempt to capture an overweight royal whose ever-increasing girth makes "rescue" a difficult task. Online action lets two teams of four go head-to-head in Ad-hoc or Infrastructure mode, and there are now 14 multiplayer maps in which to do battle. Each class has special weapons and abilities, and the hat machines, weapons, and castles can be upgraded by using resources collected by Workers. Fistful of Cake features an extended single-player mode, and new multiplayer modes include "Grim Ripper," "Dilapidated," "Demolition," and "Jailbreak." ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
Originally released for Sega CD in the early '90s, and then repackaged and upgraded for PlayStation in 1999 and again in 2002 as Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony represents what developer Game Arts considers the definitive version of its critically acclaimed RPG. As always, players take control of a young boy named Alex, who yearns to be a "Dragonmaster" like his hero Dyne, and guide him and his companions through an epic journey filled with combat, magic, and a healthy dose of animated cut-scenes.
PSP gamers get a chance to experience a number of additions and upgrades, including a prologue that gives some insight as to why Alex is so fond of Dyne, icon-driven menu and battle systems, and a new fast travel option. Other portions of the game have been honed as well, resulting in smaller, more-manageable towns and the abolition of random battles, while graphics have been completely redone to take advantage of the PSP's widescreen, and the remastered soundtrack includes a number of newly composed songs. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
