As its title suggests, 3 Erotic Tales is just that -- a trio of sexy shorts tossed off by a group of European filmmakers. Produced by Regina Ziegler, the omnibus begins with Bernd Heiber's "The Night Nurse," in which a cop standing guard over a convalescing criminal entertains torrid Florence Nightingale fantasies about the lowlife's ravishing RN. Georgi Shengelaya's "Georgian Grapes" sees a sleepy little village shaken to its foundation by the arrival of a sexy actress, who provides a local mechanic's jealous wife with a few lessons in the art of seduction. Rounding out the titillating triptych is Jos Stelling's "The Gas Station," his follow-up to "The Waiting Room"; the short centers on the affairs of an unfortunate man who flirts with a fellow driver while stuck in a traffic jam and quickly discovers the true meaning of autoerotica. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

Based on a true story, this fast-paced light comedy follows the antics of a couple of sharpsters bent on making a quick profit in 1961 Russia. At that time, the currency was being revalued downward, so that 100 old rubles would equal 10 new ones. Everyone had to exchange their old paper money for the new currency. However, coins would retain their full value. Naturally, anyone eager to multiply his money like these two would quickly exchange cash for coins. Considering himself too important to run around the countryside conning coins from rural hayseeds, the originator of this idea sends his reliable associate, a young mute, driving through the countryside along with a persuasive (if often drunk) interpreter. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This Russian drama is set in 1907 just before the Revolution erupted and centers upon a young musician who is trying to record all of the folk songs in his big country. His journey leads him to encounter all types of people. The only shadow is the threat of Czarist troops looking to exterminate those who seem to threaten the crumbling monarchy. The musician finds himself pursued when his map is mistaken by soldiers for a list of possible radicals. All those the musician visited are executed and as the story ends, a community religious celebration becomes a massacre when the troops suddenly move in to seize them en masse. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This Soviet film is a biography of the Georgian artist Niko Pirosmanishvili (1863-1918), usually known as Pirosmani. It won awards from the British Film Institute and the Chicago Film Festival. Pirosmani died of starvation, unable to sell any of his works for sufficient money to support life. Ironically, his primitivist style was later very much in fashion, and huge sums were paid for his surviving paintings. This well-regarded film focuses on Pirosmani's everyday life in the Georgia of his time, and is photographed in a bold style which echoes the artist's vision and causes the viewer to enter into it. This is necessary, because little factual material about the artist was available; most of his biography was composed of legends and recorded gossip. The film's director, Georgi Shengelaya, is the son of Nikolai Shengelaya, one of the founders of Georgia's film industry; his mother was an early Georgian movie star. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The lives, loves and concerns of a group of high-school students living in an apartment block in Tblisi are the focus of this 1956 black and white Soviet film. As they discuss their plans for the future, some say they want to go on to college, others want to go directly to work. One ne'er do well, the son of a well-regarded singer, has no plans: he only wants to drink and lounge around. The main character, Dato, is played by Georgi Shengelaya, son of the famous Georgian director Nikolai Shengelaya. Georgi went on to become a well-regarded director in his own right, making such notable and award-winning films as Journey of a Young Composer and Pirosmani. In the story, Dato wrongly believes that the girl he is in love with has given her heart to someone else. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
