This French crime thriller was the directorial debut of screenwriter Jacques Audiard and won three Césars. Jean Yanne stars as Simon Hirsch, a bored, middle-aged salesman who accompanies his best friend, cop Mickey (Yvon Back), on a stakeout for the sake of excitement. When Mickey is shot and put into a coma, Simon sets aside his job and family in order to catch the would-be killers. In a parallel story that takes place a few years earlier, a thug and gambler named Marx (Jean-Louis Trintignant) teaches a simple-minded youth named Johnny (Mathieu Kassovitz) the finer points of thug life, including shakedowns and professional hits. Reviewers declared that the main attraction of this romantic drama was the chance to see the ever-elegant Fanny Ardent in action as a well-to-do woman who wants to put her life in better order. Muriel (Ardent) is married to a philandering publisher, who quite openly entertains mistresses. Meanwhile, her son will soon be old enough to leave the nest. The mainstay of her rather empty (but very well-dressed) life is her coffee klatches with her girlfriends. Not to be outdone by her husband, she has a lover too. Thinking to arrange for a divorce, she hires a private investigator to document her infidelities. However, when she confronts her husband with them, he is completely unfazed and merely appreciates them as an example of her enterprising ways. Despite its thin storyline, this was a well-regarded first feature for director Paule Muret. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this "inside look" at French filmmaking, Marechal (Francis Girod) - who is a has-been director - a producer, Vito Catene (Andre Marcon) and Camile Dor (Fabienne Babe), a big-name actress, have agreed to make a film about drugs, but don't have a story, financing, or any of the other elements needed to make it. This doesn't stop them; they cobble together the financing and begin shooting anyway. The producer is very fond of the leading actress, and when she gets hooked on drugs for real in the course of shooting what he feels to be a farcical imitation of a film, he gives up his shares in the film and heads off for the back of beyond (Zanzibar) to lick his wounds. To add insult to injury, the film winds up being a critical and commercial success. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In a most unusual, near menage a trois, Charlotte (Isabelle Huppert, sister of director Caroline Huppert) is a terrified young singer who is forced to hide out at the home of her ex-boyfriend -- her current male companion has been murdered in his apartment, and she fears the worst. The trouble is that Mathieu (Niels Arestrup), her ex, is happily living with his new love Christine (Christine Pascal), and Charlotte's presence totally unnerves him and upsets Christine. Yet he agrees to hide her above their garage. That arrangement does not last long, and Charlotte shortly disappears on them, only to call Mathieu for help a few days later. He zooms off to her rescue, but even Christine, intensely hurt by Mathieu's behavior with Charlotte, agrees to help the duo cross over into Spain. Before that plan can be put in place, Charlotte is gone again -- leaving Christine and Mathieu to patch up the wounds in their relationship, which faces an uncertain future. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A French music lover befriends a once-great American jazz artist and attempts to save him from self-destruction in this moody drama. Saxophonist Dexter Gordon portrays Dale Turner, a fictional musician inspired by a number of famed jazz figures, including Bud Powell and Lester Young. Largely forgotten in his home country, Turner has moved to Paris in search of a more appreciative audience. He finds it in the form of Francis Borler (Francois Cluzet), a bebop aficionado who befriends the expatriate player. Borler soon becomes familiar with Turner's darker side, including his struggles with alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression. Fearing for the musician's life, the fan becomes his caretaker, an arrangement that leads to a brief improvement in Turner's health and fortunes but places great emotional strain upon them both. Director Bertrand Tavernier pays great attention to the visual and aural details of the jazz world, with outstanding musical supervision provided by Herbie Hancock. 'Round Midnight's greatest asset, however, is Gordon's Academy Award-nominated performance, informed by his own life experiences. His naturally fascinating presence combines with the film's obvious love of the music and its milieu to provide what many have hailed as one of the more authentic and affectionate presentations of the jazz world on the silver screen. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

This light romantic comedy is set up as a film-within-a-film, and features Francois Cluzet as Ferdinand, a screenwriter and director who has been in the business since he debuted as a child actor. (The same can be said of this film's director and co-scripter, Didier Haudepin). Ferdinand is working on a play about a young actor and his problems, but at the same time, he is trying to iron out his own problems. His beloved Elsa (Christine Pascal) has just left him and he cannot stop himself from writing a subplot dealing with his troubled romantic life. This sets off his producer, and so Ferdinand had better come up with a solution to his plot and his personal life soon. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This melodramatic, clichéd story loosely based on a true, 1983 racially-motivated murder, starts with three men arrested for disorderly conduct at a dance. After they are released, they take a train trip, vent their continuing anger on a young Arab, and kill the man by forcing him out of a window on the speeding train. Their crime is witnessed by Isabelle (Christine Pascal) and reported to the police, enabling commissioner Couturier (Roger Hanin) to find the killers. The major problem now is to prevent a race riot when right-wing extremists falsely accuse some Arabs of reprehensible actions and the townspeople gather to demonstrate at the prison. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

French filmmaker Diane Kurys directs the period drama Coup de Foudre (distributed in the U.S. as Entre Nous), adapted from a book she co-wrote with Olivier Cohen. The semi-autobiographical story is based on the life of the director's mother. Lena (Isabelle Huppert) is a Jewish refugee from Belgium living in occupied France during WWII. In order to avoid being sent to a German concentration camp, she agrees to marry the discharged military officer Michel (Guy Marchand). He tries to provide a decent life for her by running an auto repair business. They have two children together, but Lena is unhappy and stifled by her domestic life. Michel doesn't offer her the sensitivity and affection that she requires. Meanwhile, in Paris, the extroverted artist Madeleine (Miou-Miou) mourns the accidental death of her husband. After the liberation of France, she marries actor Costa (Jean-Pierre Bacri) and has children of her own. In 1952, Lena and Madeleine meet by chance in Lyons. The two women develop an emotional relationship that borders on romantic involvement. Their bond is only strengthened by a mutual dissatisfaction with their husbands, children, and home life in general. Entre Nous was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1983. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
