Based on a true incident that happened in 1935 in the Argentine Senate, this fictionalized account of the murder of a senator avoids the main issue of the killing: those accused of complicity in the murder were acquitted by the senators of the ruling Conservative Party. This film focuses on the character and life of the murderer instead of addressing the serious political corruption of the time. The intended victim, the democratic leader Lisandro De La Torre (Pepe Soriano) attacked the government for selling out the nation's lucrative meat-packing trade to a foreign company, and when ex-police chief Valdez-Cora (Miguel Angle Solá) tried to gun De La Torre down in the parliament building, he killed another senator, Enzo Bordabehere (Arturo Bonín) by accident. The corruption and abuses of Valdez-Cora cause his own Conservative Party to throw him off the police force, at which point he becomes the bodyguard of a senator and cattle rancher (in reality, he was hired by the Minister of Agriculture as a bodyguard). The exploits of Valdez-Cora get him involved in the world of prostitution and eventually force his wife and daughter to leave him for good. His life gives ample play to scenes of sex and violence, although the lead actors rise above these lower levels of the script. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A group of former high-school buddies, now in their mid-40s, gather 25 years after graduation to relive their glory days. The reunion is the brainchild of Ricardo (AKA Elvis -- for his love of the King's music and his tendency to dance to it atop the roof of his office-furniture store). The old gang is comprised of Ricardo's depressive, hypochondriac wife Ana and her socially-conscious former lover Ernesto, a journalist who left Ana years ago to pursue his political ideologies in post-revolutionary Cuba. Ernesto's presence revitalizes Ana who in turn begins showing renewed interest in her husband. Unfortunately for her, by that time Ricardo has fallen in love with Vera, a beautiful Cuban cellist. Two other members of the old gang also show up. Finally there is Sebastian, Ricardo and Ana's 20-year-old son. A poet, he shares Ernesto's serious view of the world. As the party progresses, their reminiscences of the good old days are shown via flashback. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

A cerebral examination of the way a murder impacts two economically disparate families, this drama marks the directorial debut of Albertina Carri. Somewhere in Argentina, two middle-class brothers fight over whether to sell the family business; the harder working one is gradually set up as the murder victim. In the second family, a young man lacking in ambition drifts in and out of his angry father's house and begins an affair with a prostitute. One of her clients happens to be the second brother, and through his association with the prostitute, he veers irretrievably toward murder. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

The seasoned producer-cum-director Marcelo Pavan helms the moody, deliberately-paced minimalist drama La Punta del Diablo (AKA Devil's Point, 2006). When confronted by the diagnosis of his own inoperable and malignant brain tumor, Argentine neurosurgeon Roberto discovers a heretofore non-existent spiritual connection with Lydia (Prakriti Maduro), one of his cancer patients. Face-to-face with his own transience, Roberto drops out of life, climbs into his car, and begins a lengthy, aimless drive, headed south, out of Buenos Aires. Spotting a woman, Maria (Romina Paula), (who closely resembles Lydia) driving ahead of him on the freeway, he impulsively tails her north, to the small fishing village in Uruguay, Punta del Diablo. Roberto beds down in a shack run by Franco, at which Maria is also residing, and discovers that the two are romantically involved. While Maria drifts away from Franco and toward Roberto - both feeling out and exploring deep-rooted but undeclared emotional connection with one another - Roberto glides deeper into a state of great emotional, psychological and spiritual uncertainty and instability. Meanwhile, the existence of the romantic triangle puts everyone on edge. Throughout the film, helmer Pavan relies heavily on Roberto's ethereal first-person narration and utilizes the rhapsodic "floating" cinematography of Rolo Pulpiero to depict a man drifting into a state of pure existence and introspection while assessing the overall meaning and significance of his life. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
