This otherwise amateurishly produced feature may be of some interest to neophyte viewers of the film Boogie Nights, as it is an R-rated version of the sort of extremely inept pornographic films depicted in that movie. Wealthy metallurgist Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider) lives to regret his extramarital affair with pretty young Cini (Kelly Preston). A trio of vicious blackmailers (John Glover, Robert Trebor, Clarence Williams III) show Mitchell a videotape of his most recent roll in the sack with Cini. They demand a huge amount of hush money, but Mitchell calls their bluff, going so far as to tell his politicially ambitious wife Barbara (Ann-Margret) about the affair. But the extortionists haven't even gotten started yet. Tying Mitchell to a chair, they force him to watch a tape of Cini being horribly murdered-with the evidence arranged so that Mitchell will be accused of the crime. But Mitchell remains firm in his refusal to pay up, whereupon he mounts a "fight fire with fire" plan all his own. 52 Pick Up was based on a novel by Elmore Leonard, which was previously filmed in 1984 as The Ambassador. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this erotic comedy for adults only (which parodies the then-recent Blame It on Rio), two close friends -- Ginger (Ginger Lynn Allen) and Laurel (Barbara Dare) -- find themselves attracted to each other's fathers during a weekend getaway by the seaside. Before long, Ginger has bedded Laurel's dad, and Laurel has had her way with Ginger's, leading to all manner of complications, which eventually brings the two friends back together in a surprising way. Director Alan J. Pakula does the best anyone can with this complicated tale of what happens when the dream state and the waking state are confused and intermingled. While at home alone one day, Kathy Gardner (Kristy McNichol) defends herself against an intruder by stabbing him in the back. Now when she tries to sleep she keeps on having nightmares about the incident. Enter Michael Hansen (Ben Masters) a dream researcher who postulates that the actions in a dream state can be channeled into real but controlled actions. These real actions then harmlessly release tension or anger or whatever is at issue. The problem is that his research is not thoroughly tested, and Kathy may not be the best subject to use as a guinea pig. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Charlton Heston, portraying swaggering bigot land-baron Richard "King" Howland on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, does a spit take when his sister Sloan (Yvette Mimieux) announces that she plans to marry Paul Kahana, a 100% native Hawaiian (played by 100% native Philadelphian James Darren). But Howland, in the meantime, is having a torrid affair with Mei Chen (France Nuyen). During Sloan and Paul's engagement party, Mei Chen's brother comes at Howland with a knife, but Paul intercedes and is killed. Sloan, bitter at Howland for Paul's death, runs off to Honolulu, where she is taken in by Paul's brother Dean (George Chakiris) and his family. Meanwhile, Mei Chen gives birth to Howland's child but dies during childbirth. Howland, ever the rabid racist, refuses to accept the child and Sloan takes it upon herself to care for it. After an angry fight with Sloan and Dean, Howland is confronted with a personal dilemma -- whether to continue on with his closed-minded ways or to welcome his newborn son into his family. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This mediocre comedy relies on the stereotypical concept of country rubes for much of its humor. The village tomboy, appropriately named Tommy Smith (Dorothy Devore), runs a boarding house. A city visitor, Aldon Farwell (Herbert Rawlinson), comes to stay at the Smiths,' and Tommy finds out that he is a revenue officer. When liquor is found in the barn, Tommy suspects that her father (James O. Barrows) is the bootlegger that Farwell is looking for. Then when Hiram (Lee Moran), the sheriff, is murdered, her father is accused of the killing. Tommy and Farwell work together to discover who the real guilty party is, and all sorts of country bootlegging intrigue ensues. It turns out that Rugby Blood (Harry Gribbon), who has been posing as an invalid boarder at the Smiths, is the real bootlegger. Mr. Smith is actually a revenue officer himself and is working with Farwell, who confesses his love for Tommy. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
