The rich musical heritage of the Turkish metropolis located between the Orient and the Occident comes to the screen in director Fatih Akin's cinematic tribute to Istanbul's thriving music scene. In bringing both historic and recent expressions of Istanbul's unique legacy of music to the screen in a documentary that strives to both inform and entertain, Akin offers compelling insight into both the creative history of the city as well as the lives of the individuals who populate it. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is a melodramatic story about a young prostitute who works in a run-down, low-end brothel. When the young woman arrives at "Number 14" in a slum neighborhood of Istanbul, a particularly violent pimp takes over her business. She finds some solace in her friendships with the other women, and in a real and loving relationship with a shy young man. As this relationship blossoms, the pimp becomes more violent daily and is certainly not happy about losing her. In the meantime, her family has found out what she does for a living in Istanbul, and her brother comes to the city packing a gun. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
