Brian Dennehy plays a Wambaugh-type cop who has flourished as a novelist. At the moment, however, Dennehy is suffering from a profound case of writer's block. Coming to the rescue, as it were, is professional hit man James Woods. Recently dumped by his boss, above-suspicion business executive Paul Shenar, Woods is anxious to tell his life story to Dennehy, in hopes of striking it rich with a tell-all bestseller. Shenar, however, takes a dim view of Woods' indiscretions, and for a while it looks as though it's curtains for both Dennehy and his teenaged daughter Allison Balson. This action-packed and stylish Japanese animated adventure is set in a smoldering, ruined post-nuclear holocaust world where violence rules. It is based on a popular series of graphic novels. Since the great war, the world has become divided into tough little nations, nations that must fight hard to survive. Ken is the leader of one such nation, North Star. One day, elder Ryuken commands him to go into the world and make peace with the other barbarians. During his journey, Ken befriends a mischievous teen and a sweet young girl who is too naive to be as hopeless as the rest. Along the way, the three engage in graphic, bloody battles with a series of terrifying mutants. Although animated, this film may be too vividly violent with its stylized but realistic scenes of dismemberment, decapitation, and blood- gushing disembowelment for children. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Project X boasts better special effects than usual for tight-fisted producer/director William Castle, but it crumbles in the story department. Christopher George is a secret agent living in the year 2118, who through a complex scientific charade is convinced that he's living in 1968. The plan is for George to uncover a secret germ formula that had been hidden away 50 years earlier. Castle's propensity for borrowing gimmicks from earlier films is well known; this time he reaches back as far as a nearly-forgotten 1954 episode of the TV series Flash Gordon!
