It doesn't take long for the alleged story line to disappear from this kickboxer feeding-frenzy of a film so the real action can begin. Supposedly the movie is about an Olympic-caliber kickboxer who leaves Paris, headed to "some" southern California school to get an engineering degree and help train a kickboxing team. But it's really an effort to show how many Mexican- American hoodlums one artful foot flinger can dispatch. ~ Rovi
Black Eagle takes as its inspiration Reagan-era cold war paranoia. After a renegade scientist goes AWOL, a top secret device is up for grabs. International intrigue ensues, with CIA agent Ken Tani aka Black Eagle and KGB operative Andrei, played by Jon Claude van Damme at the center. The picture builds towards their inevitable showdown where American interests are preserved. Black Eagle was van Damme's second picture.

US air force lieutenant Lisa Echhorn is determined to prove her mettle by taking a grueling escape-and-evasion course. Along with several other trainees, Echhorn is parachuted to a remote island where she is to be tracked down by the "enemy". Reluctantly teamed with major Tom Skerritt, who has been injured in the jump, Echhorn successfully reaches the "safe" goal she's been assigned, only to learn that she has been dragooned into a far more deadly training program than she'd expected. Put to work in a hard labor camp, Echhorn is subjected to various and sundry humiliations by master sadists Anthony Zerbe and Richard Roundtree. Karate champ Chuck Norris returns for another chop-socky vigilante flick in The Octagon, one of a handful of undistinguished Ninja pictures released during the early '80s. Norris appropriately plays a retired karate champ hired as a bodyguard for a wealthy woman (Karen Carlson) plagued by a gang of vicious ninjas. Reluctant at first to take the job, he reconsiders when he learns the gang is headed by his longtime arch rival Tadashi Yamashita (Lee Van Cleef). The script -- as is the case in nearly every Ninja film -- has holes bigger than Okinawa, and the acting is downright atrocious, particularly that of Norris, who, thankfully, improved with time. However, the production values are fair, as is the direction, and the action sequences are often exciting and comparatively realistic. Recommended for genre fans only. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi
