A lazy day lounging under the California sun turns into a cash windfall for two high school surfers who create a new sport that starts to spread like wildfire. Bored teens Ty Neptune and James James were just attempting to have a bit of fun when they spotted a refrigerator box in a dumpster, slapped some wheels on it, and ventured out to take their new creation for a test drive. The result is a new sport called Boxboarding, and it isn't long before a local news crew arrives on the scene and word of this quirky new sport begins to spread. Before long, the boys are celebrities in their high school and the hilly streets of Laguna Beach are filled with aspiring Boxboarders. But of course where there's fame competition is sure to follow, and a scheming rich kid Alexander Keene attempts to organize a "winner takes all" event in which the best Boxboarder secures all the rights to this popular new sport. While folks like Ty and James are in it purely for fun, others like stuck-up hanger-on Tara are just trying to cash in on the Boxboarding craze and get a little exposure on MTV. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Frequent Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes gets behind the camera again for this teen-sci-fi/action-drama in the Back to the Future (1985) mold. Jesse Bradford stars as Zak Gibbs, a teenager who discovers the latest invention to spring from the mind of his scientist father (Robin Thomas) and a research team that includes his dad's eccentric colleague Dr. Earl Dopler (French Stewart). It seems that they have developed a wristwatch that manipulates "hypertime," speeding up the passage of regular time 25 times for the wearer and those near him, making it appear that the rest of the world has become essentially "frozen" in time. Zak is delighted with the ability that he initially treats as the ultimate gag and superpower, until the National Security Agency begins pursuing both him and the device, intending to confiscate it for nefarious political purposes. Clockwatchers (2002) co-stars Michael Biehn, Paula Garces, and Julia Sweeney. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

A hoax becomes a dangerous reality in this made-for-cable sci-fi thriller. Bill Templer (Dale Midkiff) is an agent with a secret intelligence faction who, in an effort to attract attention away from his latest assignment, pulls a massive con on the American mass media -- he concocts realistic but phony evidence that shows a squadron of aliens from another world are poised to attack the Earth. The scheme not only fools most Americans, but even the President of the United States, who in retaliation schedules the launch of a satellite that can be used to launch nuclear missiles against invading spacecraft. Despite the skill of Templer's forgery, Kevin Anjenatte (Dondre T. Whitfield), a police investigator, discovers evidence that Templer's evidence is phony, and Templer and security chief Ava Zurich (Chyna) set out to silence the detective before his story gets out. But as Templer and Anjenatte play a deadly game of cat and mouse, Anjenatte learns that an armada of alien spacecraft really is poised to attack the Earth, and they have to be stopped (and the launch of the offensive satellite weapon must be scrapped) before it's too late. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The worst in a string of increasingly pointless sequels to Sean S. Cunningham's crude slasher hit, this installment provided clear evidence that the "slasher" subgenre, already creatively dead, was no longer financially viable. This time around, unstoppable supernatural thug Jason Voorhees -- imprisoned at the bottom of a lake by his telekinetic foe Tina in the previous film -- is reanimated yet again after being goosed by an underwater electrical cable, freeing him to stow away aboard a shipload of standard-issue obnoxious teenagers en route to Manhattan. The title ultimately proves a bit of a cheat, since the majority of Jason's homicidal hijinks take place aboard the ship until the film's final reel, during which he pursues a handful of survivors through the streets of the Big Apple. Thanks to heavy MPAA cuts, the mayhem is more subdued here than in any other films of the series -- splatter fans primed by the previous chapters' copious bloodletting will be left high and dry. Despite a very amusing "teaser" trailer that suggested that the film might be a semi-parody, writer/director Rob Hedden and company play things tediously straight. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi
