Johnny Cash Movies
Emerging into the public's consciousness in 1958, country & western performer Johnny Cash hit his first popularity peak in the mid-'60s with his hard-driving prison, train, and "underdog" ballads. Changing tastes, coupled with his own volatile temperament, resulted in as many lows as highs in the late 20th century, but Cash is a survivor, and was still very much on hand for the country & western upsurge of the late '80s. His first film appearances were in shapeless semi-concert pictures like Hootenanny Hoot (1963), but he went on to excel as a naturalistic actor in such Westerns as A Gunfight (1971) and The Last Days of Frank and Jesse James (1986). Johnny Cash is shown to best cinematic advantage as "himself" in the 1970 documentary Johnny Cash: The Man, His World, His Music, which features Cash's wife, June Carter. Cash was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Lincoln Center in 1997.Still hugely popular as the millennuim turned, the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards found Cash's video for the song "Hurt" nominated for no less than six awards. The reflective video ultimately took home the prize for Best Cinematography, cementing Cash's status as an artist whose musical stylings truly knew no boundries. Shortly thereafter, in early September of 2003, Johnny Cash died of complications of diabetes in Nashville, TN. at the age of 71. His death came just four short months after that of his longtime wife June Carter Cash. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Johnny Cash scored one of his first singles in 1956 with "Folsom Prison Blues", and the song branded Cash with the indelible image of an outlaw who knew the price of living on the wrong side of society. By 1968, Cash was still a star, but he was a man with sometime to prove as he sought to rise from a career slump brought on by a battle with drugs that took a toll on his body and spirit. That year, Cash performed a concert for the inmates of California's Folsom Prison, and the show was recorded for a live album. Cash delivered one of the greatest performances of his life that day, stark and heartfelt and full of empathy for the broken souls listening to his music, and the album that resulted was a surprise hit, reestablishing Cash as one of country music's most powerful and respected artists. Filmmaker Bestor Cram offers an in-depth look at Cash's famous Folsom Prison show and the people who helped to make it possible in the documentary Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison, which combines recordings of the show with rare still photos and interviews with Cash's friends, colleagues and bandmates. Originally created for a bonus DVD included with an expanded reissue of Cash's landmark album, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison also played the film festival circuit, including a screening at the 2009 Cinequest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

During the 1980s and '90s, professional snowboarder (or 'X-Games Pro') Craig Kelly clocked in as one of the top-tiered international competitors of his sport, then swept up a veritable pantheon of awards and honors including seven World Snowboarding Championship titles. Kelly also perfected the practice of mountain-back country riding - and developed such a longstanding affinity for that pastime that he opted to devote all of his time to it and qualified as the first accredited snowboarding mountain guide in history. In addition, Kelly developed and honed a unique spiritual philosophy related to snowboarding that explores the unity between the participant, the snowboard and the surrounding mountains. Jacques Russo's documentary homage Let It Ride interweaves two narratives: it observes and traces the history of the rise in snowboarding as an international pastime, as it relays Kelly's own personal ascent to legendary status within his field. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

James Mangold's Walk the Line tells the life story of country music legend Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix), focusing primarily on the long courtship he had with June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). The film is structured as an extended flashback opening with Cash readying to take the stage at his historic Folsom Prison Concert. The film touches on his childhood, relating a horrific early incident from his life and establishing the troubled relationship he would have with his father (Robert Patrick). Cash joins the military and leaves home. During his time in the armed services he begins writing songs and romances a hometown girl (Ginnifer Goodwin). After the end of his duty he settles down and attempts to begin a music career, but his wife has trouble adjusting to his dreams. Cash auditions for Sam Phillips (Dallas Roberts), signs to Sun Records, and soon finds himself on tour with a roster of young soon-to-be legends that includes Elvis Presley (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne). On this tour he meets June Carter, the daughter of the famous Carter family, and they take a liking to each other, although she refuses any serious advances from him. Cash gains world-wide fame thanks in part to the inspiration he gets from June, but eventually his marriage crumbles and he develops a serious drug addiction. The film is based on Cash's autobiographies. Phoenix and Witherspoon performed all of their own singing in the movie, just as Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo did in Coal Miner's Daughter a quarter-century before. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Cowboy Jack Clement is one of the great behind-the-scenes figures in the history of country and rock and roll, as well as a legendary eccentric in a field full of outsized personalities. As Sam Phillips' second-in-command at Sun Records, Clement recorded some of Jerry Lee Lewis's biggest hits, and helped Johnny Cash and Charlie Rich refine their styles. After moving to Texas, Clement cut a handful of early hits for George Jones and suggested he record "She Thinks I Still Care". In Nashville, he discovered Charley Pride and Townes van Zandt and after deciding that recording studios were a bad environment for recording he turned his home into "The Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa," where he's cut sessions on everyone from Emmylou Harris to Frankie Yankovic. Clement has also written hit songs, produced a horror movie (Dear Dead Delilah), shot hours of video for a variety of unaired television special starring himself and his friends, and become known as one of the funniest and canniest minds in Nashville. Shakespeare Was A Big George Jones Fan: Cowboy Jack Clement's Home Movies is a documentary (produced in part by Clement himself) that takes a look at his life and career as well as offering a healthy portion of the anecdotes, philosophies and tall tales Clement is known to share. The film also includes excerpts from Clement's library of home movies and videos, including footage of him having fun with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson and many more. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A standout cut from what proved to be the last studio album Johnny Cash released in his lifetime, "Hurt" was a song originally written and performed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, but Cash's striking interpretation gave the song's tale of chemically induced woe a greater and more haunting resonance than it ever had before. Filmmaker Mark Romanek worked with Cash to create a music video for the song that combined clips of the singer at the peak of his fame and his strength contrasted with the frail but determined artist near the end of his life; the result was a striking short film which paid a sincere if painful homage to one of America's most influential musicians. The video received such high praise that it was released on DVD; Johnny Cash: Hurt features a high-bit transfer of the film, which was also included as a bonus disc with a special edition of Cash's album American IV: The Man Comes Around. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
