The real Marquis of Grillo lived in the early 18th century, but, for this take-off on the marquis' life, director Mario Monicelli) has changed the time period to the early 19th century when a lot more was going on in Rome. The marquis (Alberto Sordi) amuses himself by throwing red-hot coins to beggars, occasionally walling up the store entrance of an offending merchant and installing a urinal there instead, and generally making witty and broad comments on the life going on around him. His existence suddenly gets a lot more interesting when he discovers his physical (unrelated) twin in a Roman tavern (also Alberto Sordi) - a drunkard who works transporting coal when he is sober. As a joke, the marquis takes the passed-out drunk to his mansion and puts him in his bed -- fully intent on convincing the drunk and everyone else that this man is the real marquis. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Don't look for Moe, Larry and Curly (nor even Shemp or Joe Besser) in The Italian-Chinese The Three Stooges vs. the Wonder Woman. The terrible trio in this film is played by Yueh Hua, Nick Jordan and Mark Hannibal. These "stooges" are slapstick-prone warriors who do battle against an Amazonian high priestess (May May Wong) and her buxom followers. Not only is the title misleading, but so are the production credits: the "Al Bradley" listed as director is really Alfonso Brescia. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
According to the history books, the female Amazon warriors of Asia Minor often chopped off their breasts, the better to accommodate their bow-and-arrow weaponry. Rest assured that the anonymous Spanish and Italian starlets in Battle of the Amazons are in full possession of their principal attributes. Lucretia Love plays the Amazon queen, who assembles her forces when the bad guys invade their land. Love is aided in battle by the neighboring male farmers, led by the athletic Lincoln Tate. The direction of Battle of the Amazons was credited to Al Bradley, but this was a pseudonym for Alfonso Brescia. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The culmination of filmmaker Federico Fellini's lifelong love affair with circus folk was his 1971 The Clowns (I clowns). Fellini's alter ego this time is a young boy, taking in his first circus (again, we're treated to the "parade" motif so often utilized by the director). As the clowns go through their rollicking routines, Fellini takes the time to snipe at movie critics by having one humorless newspaperman, who keeps repeating "What does it mean?", inundated with pails of water. There is also a fleeting homage to Charlie Chaplin in the form of Chaplin's daughter Victoria, who portrays an auditioning clown. Made for Italian TV, The Clowns sustains its exuberance by taking absolutely nothing seriously--not even Fellini, who makes fun of himself throughout in the guise of a pretentious documentary filmmaker. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In the first in a series of detective comedies from director Blake Edwards starring Peter Sellers as bumbling French Inspector Jacques Clouseau, the mishap-prone snoop is actually a supporting player. David Niven stars as Sir Charles Litton, a suave jewel thief known as "The Phantom." Vacationing in a deluxe Alpine resort, Litton's real purpose is to purloin the Pink Panther, a gem of enormous worth owned by a princess (Claudia Cardinale). On his trail for years, Inspector Clouseau keeps losing his quarry, perhaps because his wife Simone (Capucine) is Litton's lover and alerts him every time her husband draws near. Also after the Panther is Litton's American nephew, George (Robert Wagner). At a posh costume ball at the princess' villa, the bauble is stolen and Clouseau, still trying to determine the bandit's identity, is framed for the crime himself. The Pink Panther made Sellers and his Clouseau act so popular that the character moved to center stage in a series of farcical sequels. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Voice in Your Heart (Une Voce nel tuo Cuore) is purely and simply a showcase for the splendid
singing talents of Beniamino Gigli and Gino Bechi. The main plot concerns the romance between war-correspondent Paul (Vittorio Gassman) and cabaret-singer Helen (Fiorella C. Fionti). Paul encourages Helen to pursue an operatic career, which is how Gigli and Bechi figure into the proceedings. The course of true love is halted by Paul's faithless former girlfriend, played by American actress Constance Dowling. As can be seen, the plot of Voice in Your Heart is hardly new; and as previously mentioned, its principal raison d'etre is the superb operatic passages provided by Signors Gigli and Bechi. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
