Emerenziano (Ugo Tognazzi) is the middle aged tax inspector looking for a rich woman to keep from working and provide him with food and sex. He travels to northern Italy where he is taken in by three maiden sisters of less than average beauty. He marries one sister and takes the other two as mistresses. The virginal sisters are slowly transformed in to man hungry mavens, each possessing their own individual sexual talents. Emerenziano is felled by a stroke when he tries to get the maid to play erotic games. This comedy concerns identical twin brothers who have a very different way of looking at life. Filippo makes a living selling nude photographs and engaging in forgery and petty crimes, much to the consternation of his brother Mario, an honest law man employed by the government. Mario is driven crazy by Filippo, who eventually sleeps with Mario's wife and becomes a respected member of Parliament. An ingenious thief steals Michelangelo's Pieta, worth $30 billion in the farce. The trouble is, he has no buyers and so lets an American gangster have it for $40 and a spaghetti dinner. Meanwhile, the Vatican, not wanting the abduction to become public, sends out a priest to find the thieves and retrieve the statue. A couple with marital problems hopes to find new spirit living in a haunted house in this arcical comedy. Pasquale (Vittorio Gassman) and Maria (Sophia Loren) are a couple who are married, but not at all happily; he's a chronically unemployed musician, she can't stand her husband, and they've both decided they'd be better off dead. However, when their suicide pact goes wrong and both are still alive, Maria decides to pay a visit to Alfredo (Mario Adorf), who ran the orphanage where she was raised. Alfredo has had a lustful eye on Maria ever since she was a teenager, and he sees the current turn of events as a perfect opportunity to break up her marriage. Alfredo offers to "help" the couple by having them housesit at an old mansion which is said to be haunted; unknown to them, Alfredo has secreted himself away in the house in order to drop clues that ghosts walk. Adding to the confusion, Pasquale decides to make some extra money by renting out one of the rooms to a streetwalker, Sayonara (Margaret Lee), which leads Maria to suspect that her husband is either the new lodger's customer or her pimp. Donne Sole (Women Alone) attained good American bookings thanks to the star power of Eleanora Rossi Drago and Gianna Maria Canale. The film is, in part, an inward-looking glance at the Italian motion picture industry and its treatment (or mistreatment) of women. Otherwise, the story is a lighthearted romantic trifle, set in and around Monte Carlo. Paolo Stoppa scores as the erstwhile suitor of the two leading ladies and their attractive companion Luciana Angiolilio. Donne Sole served as the directorial debut of Vittorio Sala; the film was entered into competition at the 1956 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
