A mild-mannered banker finds himself living out his wildest dreams, only to wake up to a major dilemma in a continent-hopping comedy. Raymond (Hugh Laurie) is a British bank clerk who doesn't much care for his job, and whose marriage to Cathy (Lia Williams) has hit a rut. It would appear Cathy feels the same way about their relationship, since she's been fooling around on the side with Raymond's boss, Strothers (Patrick Barlow). Raymond's one escape from his dreary life comes from his part-time job as a dance instructor, and he often fantasizes about Orlinda (Vanessa Nunes), a beautiful and famous dancer from Brazil. One day, Raymond discovers that Cathy has finally left him to run away with Strothers, and Raymond snaps; he embezzles a fortune from the bank, and hops on the first plane for Rio, where with the help of taxi driver Paulo (Santiago Segura), he finds the lovely Orlinda, and to his amazement ends up spending the night with her. The next morning finds Raymond in a more stable frame of mind, and he decides he should return the money to the bank, but when he discovers Orlinda is gone, he realizes she took the embezzled funds with her, and now he has to find her and recover the money before it's too late. Santiago Segura is a major comedy star in Latin America, but he was cast somewhat against type in this film, since he's not Brazilian, but a Spaniard. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Cape Verde author Germano Almeida wrote the novel (Mr. Napumoceno's Last Will and Testament) that provides the source for this Portuguese-Brazilian-Cape Verdean-French-Belgium co-production. After a wealthy, unmarried businessman dies and the will is read, his nephew learns that he receives nothing. Instead, the estate goes to a servant's daughter. In flashbacks, the young woman then learns about her father as the story recounts his past life and loves. Francisco Manso shot this Portuguese-language film in Cape Verde. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

In a remote branch of the Brazilian Amazon, Americans Lewis (Tom Berenger) and Wolf (Tom Waits) are stranded when their plane runs out of gas. They are kept company by an evangelist missionary (John Lithgow) and his wife (Darryl Hannah). The preacher and his followers want to preach to the primitive Niaruna Indians, while others are interested in the Niaruna for more diabolical reasons-specifically, business concerns that would like to claim the Indians' land for development. The local police chief cuts a deal with the mercenaries Lewis and Wolf: if they will agree to bomb the Niarunas out of existence, they will be paid enough money to leave the country. Instead, Lewis, part Native American himself, aligns himself with the Niarunas. From this moment on, he and the tribe are doomed. A long-standing pet project of producer Saul Zaentz, At Play in the Fields of the Lord was adapted from the best-selling novel by Peter Matthiesen. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Jack Noah (Richard Dreyfuss) is all actor: Self-possessed, obsessive, vulnerable, and an addict for praise, his soul burns with "the craft." Having just finished a grade-Z straight-to-cable crime thriller in the fictional South American country of Parador, he gets the ultimate acting challenge (though it's more like an offer he can't refuse) from Roberto Strausman (Raul Julia), the Paradorian dictator's chief advisor. The challenge: impersonate the country's dictator, whose just died. Strausman knows just how to manipulate Noah: He takes him to a meat locker, shows him the director's body (actually Dreyfuss' brother, Lorin), threatens to kill him, and he brings clips of Noah's best reviews. Thus enticed, and bearing a striking resemblance to the man, Noah accepts the job. Under the exacting direction of Strausman, he follows the script precisely. Noah immediately enjoys the job's perks, not least of which is the dictator's scorching mistress, Madonna (Sonia Braga), but of course cannot conceal his real identity to her. A close call with Parador's revolutionaries and Madonna's brimming social conscience push Noah to take command of the role. He starts pushing a kinder, gentler social agenda, and incurs Strausman's wrath. It begins to look like Noah will play the dictator's last act, but a chance meeting with a stunt man friend (Michael Greene) inspires a caper that will change all of the characters' fates. ~ Nick Sambides, Jr., Rovi

The economic and social conditions of a small and remote Brazilian town are featured in this well-wrought story that can easily be understood as standing for a much broader picture. The police chief in the town is also the only judge and censor of the townspeople and their media, and one day his authority is subtly undermined when a traveling magician and his gorgeous wife, also his assistant, arrive to spend some time here. The wise and sophisticated magician is the exact opposite of the burly police chief (a buffoon, it turns out), and he is deeply moved by the abject poverty he sees all around, especially in the paupers' marketplace. And so with a flourish of magic power, he transforms the marketplace into an arena of abundance. The result is that he is thrown into prison by the police chief, now worried that the status quo that keeps the masses impoverished and himself in power is about to be toppled. The result is a surprise for everyone concerned, except for the magician.

This political thriller is set against the background of actual turmoil in Brazil in the 1970s, so viewers familiar with that time and place in history will get the most out of O Bom Burgues. Lucas (José Wilker) is a banker with clandestine leftist sympathies who is embezzling money from the bank to support the Communist Party, and also privately supporting a more radical group of guerrillas/terrorists that even the Party is against. Lucas' sister is a member of that paramilitary unit, and when they capture the Swiss ambassador and ask for certain concessions from the government, the action leads to serious trouble for Lucas. Not to mention the fact that his mistress is also the lover of a well-known ultra-conservative - complicating matters several times over. Those unfamiliar with Brazilian history will still enjoy the excitement in this film - even if confused now and again. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Gabriela was based on Jorge Armado's novel Gabriela, Clove and Cinammon, which also served as the source of a typically steamy Brazilian TV soap opera. Set in 1925 (when the novel was first published), the film stars Marcello Mastrioanni as Nacib, a bartender in the Bahian village of Parati. When a drought descends upon the surrounding countryside, slovenly-but-sexy Gabriela (Sonja Braga) wanders into Parati with some friends and relatives. Immediately entranced by Gabriela's earthy sensuality, Nacib hires her as a cook and potential lover. Jealous of the attentions paid to Gabriela by the local menfolk, Nacib decides to marry her, then orders her to dress and behave in a more prudish fashion. But Gabriela can't help straying sexually, and as consequence it is Nacib who is forced to undergo the film's major character transformation. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This violent feature concerns the cacao wars of Brazil in the 1920s. Gods symbolically come to life and interact with the humans who perpetuate the murderous bloodbaths. This film was one of two official entries for Brazil at the 1970 Berlin Film Festival and it illustrates the troubles of both the working class and social elite. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

In the northeastern region of Brazil, local farmers are unable to grow sufficient crops on their arid land. When a holy man arrives and claims that his "sacred" ox will bring them rain if they follow where it leads, the naive peasants believe him. They follow the mystical creature to a nearby village where soldiers are posted to guard the mayor's store of provisions. Here, the tension culminates in a clash between the starving peasants and the armed guards, and needless deaths occur. Os Fuzis/The Guns illustrates characteristics of the South American Cinema Novo movement with its expressive blend of aesthetic composition and powerful socio-political subject matter. Screenwriter/director Ruy Guerra released this feature only three years after his successful and controversial debut, Os Cafajestes/Unscrupulous (1962). In 1972, Guerra would appear onscreen as Don Pedro de Ursua in Werner Herzog's Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes/ Aguirre, the Wrath of God. ~ Kristie Hassen, Rovi
