In this drama set in Eastern Europe in 1944, (Martin Landau) plays Josef Krauzenberg, a wealthy Hungarian Jewish business owner who, despite his fortune, finds his life hanging in the balance as the Nazi "final solution" is being enacted throughout Eastern Europe. Under the terms of the Third Reich's "Europa Plan," Krauzenberg arranges with Nazi leaders to exchange his fortune, his business holdings (textile plants, steel mills, ownership of several banks) and a collection of rare art for safe passage to Switzerland for himself, his wife Rachel (Judy Parfitt), and their family. Such is Krauzenberg's wealth and power that when he agrees to sign over his property, two of the most powerful men in the Nazi regime announce they will come to his house to handle the paperwork -- Adolf Eichmann (Steven Mackintosh) and Heinrich Himmler (Danny Webb); however, as the Nazi leaders are ushered into Krauzenberg's home, they notice something unusual -- his two most trusted servants, Hans Vassmann (Kenny Doughty) and his wife Ingrid (Caroline Carver) are a married Aryan couple who are still working for a Jew despite the pogrom. As it happens, Eichmann and Himmler's suspicions are well-founded -- Hans and Ingrid are actually Jews working undercover with a team of resistance fighters, and as they serve the Nazis, they wonder if they should kill Eichmann and Himmler for the greater good, even if it would mean certain death for the Krauzenbergs and themselves. While The Aryan Couple is fictional, it was inspired by actual events, and the existence of the "Europa Plan" has been documented, though no one appears to have been saved from death through its application. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

It is there that she meets Jean Aubrey (Anthony Delon), a dashing French privateer who promptly offers her a life of romance and excitement. Leaving her dull husband, Sir Harry (James Fleet), Lady Dona takes to the high seas with her lover, but their plot to steal a ship from the English results in her having to choose between a life of duty with her husband or a life of adventure with Jean. The two-part British miniseries Comics was written by Lynda La Plante, of Prime Suspect fame. In one of his first major TV roles, Tim Guinee stars as Johnny Lazar, a second-rate standup comedian. Having witnessed a gangland "hit," Johnny himself is targeted for extermination, whereupon he embarks upon a noir odyssey reminiscent of the Warren Beatty cult film Mickey One (1966). Initially conceived as a theatrical feature, but originally aired on television in the United States, Robin Hood puts slight, but effective, twists on the legendary tale. Starring Patrick Bergin in the title role, the film follows Robin and his group of bandits as they fight Prince John and save Maid Marion (Uma Thurman). This version is a little grittier than both Errol Flynn's classic movie or the contemporary extravaganza starring Kevin Costner, since Bergin is quite down-to-earth and Thurman makes Marion into a brat, not a helpless maiden. However, these qualities and the stately photography make the film quite entertaining, and it easily equals Costner's version, even if it can't match Flynn's timeless movie. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Simon Dutton revived the character of, Simon Templar, AKA The Saint, in 1989, with a series of six two-hour action films, made for (and originally aired on) television in the UK. The first of these features, The Brazilian Connection, opens with the abduction of a baby from a pram in Knightsbridge, England. The late, celebrated Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski) has created a downbeat but emotionally harrowing, magic realist tale in this film about a fictional couple whose lives are taken over by events in Poland in the turbulent, early 1980s. Antoni Zyro (Jerzy Radziwilowicz), a Polish attorney, dies in an automobile accident. For the next several weeks, his spirit watches what happens to his wife Ula (Grazyna Szapolowska) and his cause, and directs her course of action. Ula decides that her love for her dead husband can only be expressed by hiring an attorney to defend Antoni's clients - one of the most prominent is a hero of the Gdansk strikes, accused of creating the Polish solidarity movement and fighting for the cause of democratic labor. As the lawyer defends the worker who fights for his right to organize a union, Ula is still struggling with the loss of her husband -- and losing her battle to go on. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Klaudia (Leslie Caron) once starred in movies and on the stage, but now she is wealthy enough to retire to her exclusive villa and live without the interference of the world, the press, and work demands. In order to keep her solitude inviolate, she never allows anyone into the villa except for Marianne (Leslie Malton), her lone housekeeper -- her only conduit to the world outside. Marianne's boyfriend Marek (Daniel Webb) would like to get into the villa and take forbidden photos and gain all the information he can on the reclusive star. So one day when the maid is away, Marek shows up at the gate looking as though he has just been beaten up, and asks to come in to call a friend. Klaudia opens the door as though she herself were the maid, and of course, Marek already knows this cannot be. Then he "confides" that he is really there to photograph the Canaletto painting in the star's collection. The interaction between the two suggests that they will end up with more than just a quick conversation, as Klaudia wonders why Marek wants to seduce the maid after all. The intrigue continues until the next day, when the Canaletto comes back into the picture just as Marek finally achieves his objective. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Part of the TV series entitled "The Shakespeare Plays," this is one of the subtlest and most enjoyable of the Shakespearian plays. Portraying the different types of love, it is set in a country house of aristocrats and there are practical jokes, poetry and songs that make this a most entertaining view. ~ Tana Hobart, Rovi
