In Central America, the peasants are nearly all "Indios," or people whose cultural values are those of indigenous people (rather than European or Spanish). Since the landowning and propertied classes abuse them horribly, these same ruling-class types live in perpetual fear of a bloody uprising. As a result, they suppress and abuse the peasants even more. Ironically, for the most part these peaceable people only want to be left alone. Those who do want to foment revolution have virtually no weapons and few allies to help them. In this action/adventure movie, based on a true incident, a group of Guatemalan peasants who have sought refuge in Mexico are sought out by Guatemalan death squads, and those who aren't tortured and killed are taken away in captivity. The hero in the story is a Mexican hunter whose family is mistakenly included in the raid and who teams up with a few of the survivors to win his family back and take revenge. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The unbeatable combination of both Dolores del Rio and Libertad Lamarque co-starring in this three-hanky melodrama about the self-sacrificing love of a mother makes this otherwise unexceptional film a people's favorite. Lamarque plays the mistress of a married man and del Rio has the role of his wife. After the husband dies in an auto accident, the mistress survives the crash and later gives birth to their son. The grieving widow agrees to adopt the boy as her own -- on the condition that the mistress bow out of the picture completely. She agrees and so it is settled, until many years later when the repenting birth mother wants to get to know her now-grown offspring. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this sword and sandal adventure set in the earliest days of Rome, Romulus kills his twin and takes control of the newly formed empire. Because it is devoid of women, Romulus and his army ride out to abduct the hapless Sabine women, who eventually come to love the men who kidnapped and raped them. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

La Carcel de Cananea is a well-wrought, finely acted Mexican western directed by Gilberto Gazcon and starring the popular Pedro Armendariz as a federal lawman on the trail of a young criminal. The youthful fugitive from justice (Augustin de Anda who died before the film was released) is at first an unknown quantity. But after he is captured by the persistent federal deputy, the two men begin to have a greater appreciation for each other. This friendship of sorts does not help while they both contemplate the prison that waits at the end of their journey. Fortunately for the story, there are no songs or musical numbers to interrupt the narrative. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Popular Mexican director Benito Alazraki has put together an effective cinematic version of a drama by Hector Mendoza which involved the participation of the audience. The play was held in a theater-restaurant and the dining ambiance is worked into the storyline. In the film, the setting is a cabaret where a prostitute and a young man fall in love. His intention is to marry her regardless of her past but that simple objective is not necessarily easy to reach. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Although this is just a routine comedy it does play on the daydreams of an unknown quantity of young men -- how does a mild-mannered student turn into a super-macho and win the woman he really wants? In this instance, the weakling is a poor student (Manuel "Loco" Valdez), forced to work as a waiter in order to pay for his college education. When a scientist he knows tries out an experiment on him, the lowly waiter turns into an extraordinary version of manhood, a macho who can do anything he wants both physically and mentally. Now if that does not impress the woman he longs for (Sonia Furio), then nothing will.

Quinceañera concerns a trio of young women who are going to be presented at a debutante ball. Each must contend with family issues, as well as relationship troubles. Many of the confrontations in the film concern the families worrying more about what the party says about them then they do about what their daughters might desire. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
