Javier Fox's drama Fuera del cielo (AKA Beyond Heaven, 2006) spans a 24-hour period. It begins at 6am with young Cucú, who is greeted by the return of his brother Malboro after a five-year separation. The brothers unite and embark on a long journey to the locales inhabited by their relatives, and wrap at 6am the following morning. The theme of Fox's film is "orphanhood," not in the literal sense (where children lose their parents to death) but in the abstract sense - the sense in which individuals can easily fall out of touch with their family ties. That estrangement brings to Cucú and Malboro a sense of social disconnectedness that causes a great deal of inner pain, pain they must strive to overcome. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

It is hard to get more deliriously fever-pitched than the ending of Mandingo -- in which a plantation master is shot and his main slave gets boiled in oil -- but Drum (Mandingo's mangy sequel) certainly tries. Hammond Maxwell (Warren Oates), the late slave-owner's son (from Mandingo), is trying to follow in his father's footsteps and purchases Drum (Ken Norton) and Blaise (Yaphet Kotto) from bordello hostess Marianna (Isela Vega). Marianna is actually Drum's mother, although her lesbian lover Rachel (Paula Kelly) in fact brought up the boy. Thrown into the package to Hammond is Drum's girlfriend Regine (Pam Grier), who was purchased to satisfy the carnal urges of Mr. Hammond. However, Augusta Chauvet (Fiona Lewis), setting her sites on Hammond, has other plans. Drum is such a perfect specimen of slave that neither men nor women can keep their hands off of him. Drum looks stoic until a climactic slave revolt breaks out, guaranteeing more blood and carnage than Mandingo could ever hope to provide. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

A drama with plenty of symbolism, this film centers around a black boy found in the jungle near a waterfall by an elderly Mexican plantation owner, who raises the child as his own. His youngest daughter falls in love with the boy as they grow older, and they also grow affectionate with a black panther chained in their courtyard, which mysteriously gets loose and runs off. The mother, who hates the panther, tries to get romantic with the young man, but he refuses her. She runs away and is killed by the panther. The owner, who is not comfortable with the interracial romance, forces the young man into the job of mushroom taster: if he eats a poisoned mushroom and dies, the pickers will know which areas to stay away from. He escapes and has a liaison with the daughter, who then goes off by herself to the waterfall and meets the panther, which kills her in spite of her affection for it. The young man then returns to the jungle. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

Actor turned director Rodolfo De Anda's farcical sci-fi-comedy was based on Mauricio Iglesias' novel, El Amor Es una Farsa, although the laughs aren't as pointed or frequent. Andres Garcia toplines as a man with surgically enhanced super-strength (the title clearly an effort to capitalize on the international success of The Six Million Dollar Man). Despite his gifts, poor Garcia is still a flop with the opposite sex and he goes to ridiculous lengths -- including posing as Count Dracula -- to reverse his romantic fortunes. Familiar genre faces along for this very silly ride include Isela Vega, Roberto Guzman, and Rafael Inclan. De Anda went on to direct the overwrought La Carcel de Laredo before deciding to keep concentrating on his acting career. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

As a sequel to the popular Lola la Trailer, an action film about a female trucker, this tale focuses on Lola's (Rosa Gloria Chagoyan) drug-fighting, tough persona. The film is split between James Bond-style adventures that call for derring-do and hookers or homosexuals who provide the fodder for derisive comedy. Famed Mexican actor and director Emilio Fernandez, known as "El Indio," made his last cinematic appearance in this film, in the role of a police chief. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A brilliant geologist sends a team to search the depths of the earth in an effort to learn the origin of some strange signals they've been picking up on their equipment. They discover a rock formation with an interior life that can communicate telepathically. They bring the mass to the surface and determine that the entity is "pure crystallized intelligence," and they believe many of the secrets of existence can be answered by studying the stone. However, the only message the mysterious rock is forthcoming with is what kind of food it needs, namely a particular chemical that can only be produced by the bodies of people in the throes of terror. To this end, Dr. Mantel (Boris Karloff) devises something called the Fear Chamber, where kidnapped prostitutes are frightened out of their wits with spiders, snakes, and faked Satanic rituals in order to obtain this precious chemical. Though the scientist and his assistants take pains not to physically harm their subjects, the weird living rock begins growing tentacles and soon learns how to capture its prey and extract the fluids itself, leading to the death of a lady burglar. The scientists realize what a deadly force they've unleashed on the surface world, though efforts to destroy the creature are complicated by its ability to control human minds and generate its own electricity. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi

Luis Estrada directs this groundbreaking and extremely controversial satire about Mexico's long-ruling political party, the PRI. Set in the late 1940s in the remote, thoroughly backwards village of San Pedro de los Saguaros, the film focuses on Vargas (Damian Alcazar), a petty politician who had the dubious honor of being appointed town mayor after his predecessor was decapitated for corruption by an angry mob. At first, he tries to balance the books and to bring the 20th century to the backwaters. When he is visited by slick PRI politico Lopez (Pedro Armendariz), however, he learns the officially sanctioned way of running the town: at gunpoint while pilfering the bank vaults. Soon Vargas becomes a power-mad despot, more than willing to steal or kill to further his goals. Though his PRI bosses try to reign him in, the lynch mob soon appears to be the inevitable end of Vargas' political career. The first film to criticize the PRI by name, Estrada's bitter farce savages the ruling party, the church and U.S. intervention. Cult director Alex Cox plays a small role as a seedy gringo. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
