Toronto-based power trio Rush was formed in 1968 by guitarist Alex Lifeson, bassist and singer Geddy Lee, and drummer John Rutsey; the band made their way through the Canadian bar scene until they signed a recording deal and released their self-titled debut album in 1974. However, it wasn't until Rutsey left the group and Neil Peart signed on as their new drummer that Rush's signature sound took shape, a muscular variation on progressive rock marked by the keen instrumental prowess of all three members and the lyrically and musically adventurous songwriting of Peart. With little help from the music press or mainstream radio, Rush grew into a commercial powerhouse, releasing a long string of multi-platinum albums and playing sold-out shows in North America and Europe. A notoriously reclusive band, Rush offer their fans a rare and intimate behind-the-scenes look into their music and their career in the documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, which features exclusive interviews with the members of the group and footage of them on- and off-stage as well as contributions from a number of famous fans -- from Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Gene Simmons of KISS to Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and actor and musician Jack Black. Directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage received its world premiere at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Uriah Heep was a pioneering hard rock band from Great Britain whose blend of prog rock imagery and early metal guitar attack won them a loyal audience on both sides of the Atlantic in the early '70s. After the group went through a great many personnel changes, many American listeners were unaware that under the leadership of guitarist and founding member Mick Box, Uriah Heep not only survived but thrived through the 1980s and '90s, releasing a number of successful albums in Europe through both decades and touring consistently to enthusiastic crowds. Uriah Heep: Sailing the Sea of Light is a documentary video that examines the band's career from 1986 onward. Produced with Uriah Heep's full cooperation, the documentary features extensive live footage of the band, as well as interviews with the musicians who have helped keep this band's music alive. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Sometime in the late 1980s, the rigorous morality of Soviet social doctrine had unbent sufficiently to allow the first rock 'n roll festival to be held in the USSR, but not so much as to allow Western journalists to cover the event. Instead, authorities permitted a documentary team from nearby Finland to cover the proceedings of Rockpanorama, a seven-day event featuring over four-dozen home-grown rock bands. In interviews, a lot of the musicians respond in English to questions about the significance of this music form. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
