A case of road rage results in the deaths of both drivers. As Kellerman (Reed Diamond) and Munch (Richard Belzer) investigate this tragedy, medical examiner Julianna Cox (Michelle Forbes, in her final series appearance) receives orders from "higher up" to falsify her autopsy report. Meanwhile, the rest of the homicide unit investigate the death of a would-be spy who was smothered while participating in a mock training session. In the first episode of a two-part story, a retired Baltimore police officer named Rodzinski is found murdered near his wife's tombstone. Rodzinski's son Jake (Bruce Campbell), also a cop, begs Lewis (Clark Johnson) to conduct a personal investigation of the killing. In other developments Lewis (Clark Johnson) and Munch (Richard Belzer) welcome the opportunity to pin a homicide rap on slippery drug kingpin Luther Mahoney (Erik Todd Dellums) -- especially since the prime witness is Mahoney's own nephew (played by future ER regular Mekhi Phifer). This episode introduces Michelle Forbes in the role of new chief medical examiner Julianna Cox. Descending upon a murder scene being investigated by Lewis (Clark Johnson) and Bayliss (Kyle Secor), the outspoken Cox makes no secret of her contempt for the detectives' methods of investigation. Meanwhile, the FBI probe of possible corruption in the arson unit so unnerves Kellerman (Reed Diamond) -- one of the Feds' chief targets -- that he begins lashing out at everyone close to him. An attorney found floating in a swimming pool appears to have suffered a heart attack. Before long, however, a man confesses to killing the attorney, giving up himself and an incriminating videotape to homicide detectives Pembleton (Andre Braugher) and Bayliss (Kyle Secor). Further complicating matters is the presence of the National Security Agency, who serve up a murder suspect of their own -- resulting in a major blowup by Bayliss. When an aging convicted murderer is slated to be executed after 16 years on death row, the condemned man's daughter takes Col. Barnfather (Clayton LeBouef) hostage, demanding that her father's case be reopened. While Bolander (Ned Beatty) races against time to find any shred of evidence that might free the death-row prisoner, Giardello (Yaphet Kotto) and Russert (Isabella Hoffman) try to forget their differences long enough to defuse the hostage crisis. NBC news commentator Tim Russert makes a cameo appearance as himself in this episode, wherein detectives Felton (Daniel Baldwin), Bolander (Ned Beatty), and Howard (Melissa Leo) continue to recover from their physical and emotional wounds as they return to active duty. Tonight's case roster includes two "murders in the family," one involving a walled-up skeleton, the other the double killing of an elderly couple. And though Giordello (Yaphet Kotto) is finally given the satisfaction of literally flushing out the corrupt hiring practices of his longtime nemesis Col. Granger (Gerald F. Michael Douglas runs afoul of a treacherous supervisor in this film version of Michael Crichton's novel. Douglas plays Tom Sanders, an executive at DigiCom, a leading computer software firm. DigiCom is about to launch a new virtual reality-based data storage system that is expected to revolutionize the industry, and Bob Garvin (Donald Sutherland), the owner of the company, is in the midst of negotiating a merger that could bring $100 million into the firm. However, while Tom is expecting a promotion, he discovers the position has been given instead to a new hire, Meredith Johnson (Demi Moore), with whom Tom had an affair years ago, before he was married. After her first day of work, Meredith invites Tom up to her office and makes a concerted attempt to seduce him; while Tom doesn't fight off her advances with very much gusto at first, eventually he decides things have gone too far and leaves in a huff. The next morning, Meredith accuses Tom of sexual harassment, and he realizes this was merely a power ploy to get him out of DigiCom for good; Tom, determined to fight, files a counter-suit, which makes him no friends at the company, since rocking the boat too hard could very well scotch the merger. Season three of Homicide: Life on the Street finds the day and night shifts of the Baltimore homicide squad uneasily working in tandem to solve the murder of the winner of the city's Samaritan of the Year award.
