Cute but geeky high-school student Samantha Martin (Hilary Duff) is knocked off her feet by her father's untimely death, which leaves his diner and Samantha's well-being in the care of Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge), Sam's thoroughly wicked stepmother. Not one to take on such menial tasks as dishwashing and mopping floors, Fiona exploits Sam's dependence as a method of hoisting any dirty work off her own shoulders. School is hardly a break for Samantha, particularly when Shelby (Julie Gonzalo) is around; spoiled, wealthy, and popular, Shelby treats Samantha nearly as badly as Fiona does. Samantha's life is irrevocably changed, however, by two events: a makeover of epic proportions and a sudden electronic correspondence with a mysterious young man. Due to a misplaced cell phone and a series of fateful coincidences, Samantha and her Prince Charming develop a romance through text messages and e-mails, and ultimately promise to meet face-to-face at the biggest school dance of the year. Of course, getting there doesn't go smoothly, and Samantha may miss her chance to meet her dream date -- none other than Austin (Chad Michael Murray), the most popular boy in school. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Andy (Dennis Franz) is relieved to learn that his son Theo is out of the woods regarding his medical condition -- at least for the present. Danny (Rick Schroder) and Diane (Kim Delaney), back together again, decide to keep their renewed relationship quiet. On the job, Andy and Danny investigate a series of violent attacks on cabbies; Capt. Brass (Larry Joshua) takes over Fancy's (James McDaniel) office for his new task force; and Diane's contact Danny DiSalvo (Jay Acovone) offers to "take out" drug smuggler Don Kirkendall (if and when he is ever found), thereby absolving the 15th precinct of any complicity in Kirkendall's activities. In a related development, the ex-wife of Diane's old nemesis Denby (Scott Cohen) may be able to clear up matters in the Kirkendall case -- or maybe not. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Alas, this occurs just before an important and influential jurist (Robert Munns), who may or may not help Judge Philip Banks (James Avery) land a high-profile case involving a notorious showbiz madam, is scheduled to show up for dinner! Meanwhile, Carlton Banks (Alfonso Ribeiro) endures a bizarre odyssey as he returns from a Young Republicans camp. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Placed on a strict diet and exercise regimen by Vivian (Daphne Maxwell Reid), Philip (James Avery) bribes Will (Will Smith) to sneak him a thick-and-juicy cheeseburger. The result: Philip suffers a heart attack--and Will holds himself responsible. This episode is a superb blend of uproarious comedy and poignant drama, especially when a grief-stricken Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) balks at visiting his dad in the hospital. And catch the character name of Philip's doctor! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
