Directed by Clint Eastwood, the mysterious drama Mystic River is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane and adapted by screenwriter Brian Helgeland. Set in an Irish neighborhood in Boston, Jimmy, Sean, and Dave are three childhood friends who are reunited after a brutal murder takes place. Reformed convict Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn) and his devoted wife Annabeth (Laura Linney) find out that their teenage daughter Katie (Emmy Rossum) has been beaten and killed. Jimmy's old friend Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) is the homicide detective assigned to the case, along with partner Whitey Powers (Laurence Fishburne). Jimmy also gets his relatives, the Savage brothers (Adam Nelson and Robert Wahlberg), to conduct an investigation of their own. Jimmy and Sean both start to suspect their old pal, Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), who lives a quiet life with his wife Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden) but harbors some disturbing secrets. Clint Eastwood won a Golden Coach for Mystic River at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

In the conclusion of a two-part story, Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) tells her husband Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) that she is leaving him to spend one year sealed in a biosphere with her lover Dr. Louis Pascal (Peter Vogt). Frasier reacts to this domestic setback with his usual quiet dignity and grace: He climbs onto a high ledge and prepares to jump. This episode marks the final "regular" appearance of Bebe Neuwirth as Lilith Sternin-Crane. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
Corruption is soft-core porn disguised as a gangster melodrama. Patrick Shea plays a lone-wolf troubleshooter who participates in various crimes--but only on his terms. The mafia is anxious to recruit Shea, but he isn't interested. As an enticement, the mob bestows several "favors" upon Shea, of the curvaceous variety. Mary McGee is one of the many "fringe benefits" held out as bait in Corruption. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
The American Film Institute Catalog of the 1960s incorrectly describes John Hayes' Sweet Trash as being about a dockworker lured into the loanshark racket. It actually concerns a nasty, homophobic cop named Bob Walsh, who rescues a foxy young girl named Angel from a massage parlor just before a raid. He lets her stay in his crummy apartment, and before too long they're having sex in the shower. But Angel is actually only 17, and it's all a set-up. Angel's pimp (who is first seen wearing clown makeup and has a hilltop mansion full of half-naked maids) is working for a rich, powerful man named Kelljan, who was caught in a vice raid by Bob and his partner (both in drag). He has Angel lure Bob to a hippie commune, where a girl rides naked on horseback and a guy with an eyepatch makes out with two women. As soon as Bob and Angel join the fun, the rest of the hipsters snap incriminating photos and Bob is in big trouble. Kelljan blackmails him, but the worst part for Bob is that he feels betrayed by Angel, whom he thought really loved him. He gets drunk and rapes her on an open window-ledge in retaliation, then sets about turning the tables on the pimp, even though he accidentally kills Angel in the process. She absolves him of any wrongdoing before she dies, telling him that she really loved him after all. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi
