Oscar-nominee Omar Sharif stars as devoted disciple Peter in director Guilio Base's look at the tension that arose between the Christians and Romans following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The great Barcelonan tenor Jose Carreras stars in this film biography of one of Spain's first male international opera stars, Julian Gayarre (1845-1890). The singer was the son of a peasant and had trained to be a blacksmith. One day, while working (and singing) at his forge, he was overheard by a visiting priest, who appreciated the young man's talent. After being persuaded to study to be a singer, the blacksmith received scholarships and eventually emerged as a polished performer. His career was slow to get going, and during his years in obscurity he carried on a romance with the wife of an aristocrat, a woman who eventually bore his child. Fans of the handsome (and uncharacteristically thin) opera singer Carreras will be particularly pleased to encounter this film. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Unlike Warren Beatty's Reds, this film by director Sergei Bondarchuk does not create much human dimension to the character of John Reed (1887-1920), the well-known leftist journalist who first gained fame reporting on the Mexican Revolution and eventually wrote 10 Days that Shook the World on the 1917 Russian Revolution. His stormy relationship with fellow journalist Louise Bryant does not feature here either (though she appears in the film). The main attraction of this movie is the climactic storming of the Winter Palace. Reed was indicted for sedition in the U.S. and moved to Russia where he died at the age of 33 of typhus. He is one of two Americans buried in the Kremlin. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Business is bad, and their act is going nowhere. To lure in new audiences, Johnny hires a stripteaser named Tanja (Sydne Rome). From this point, it's only a matter of time before sex and jealousy leads to violence and general chaos. The West German Just a Gigolo has little to do with the popular song of the same name. Its central character, played by David Bowie, is a World War I-era Prussian aristocrat. Living by his wits throughout Europe, Bowie uses his sexual prowess with beautiful women (and powerful men) to advance himself. The leering lothario eventually comes to grief in the decadent Berlin of the 1920s. We don't know how he did it, but director David Hemmings managed to corral some of the most stellar sex goddesses in film history to play cameos in Just a Gigolo: Kim Novak, Maria Schell, and even Marlene Dietrich. The film was originally released as Schoner Gigolo, Armer Gigolo. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Order to Kill was originally shipped out to Spanish-speaking theatres under the title El Clan de los Immorales. The story concerns a mob family, headed by gambling czar Jose Ferrer. When one of family's hit men (Helmut Berger) fails to come up to expectations, Ferrer orders the man's execution. This turn-the-tables circumstance manages to sustain the audience's interest for nearly 2 hours. Besides, it's always fun to watch the lofty Ferrer let his hair down in a cheapie. The same applies to Kevin McCarthy, who likewise appears in Order to Kill. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

One of Roman Polanski's lesser-known films, Diary of Forbidden Dreams (also known as What?) stars Sydne Rome as an attractive young hitchhiker who, as the film opens, accepts a ride from three men in a car, who later attempt to rape her. She escapes their clutches and makes her way to a mansion owned by millionaire Joseph Noblart (Hugh Griffith), who is overseeing a decadent party. Among the guests at his home are a pair of table-tennis players, a man with a harpoon (played by Polanski himself), and a hedonistic pimp played by Marcello Mastroianni.
