Michel Hazanavicius' stylistically daring, dialogue-free comedy-drama The Artist stars Jean Dujardin as George Valentin, a matinee idol in Hollywood before the dawn of talkies. His marriage is far from perfect, and one day he meets ambitious chorus girl Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) and is smitten. Very quickly thereafter, sound comes to movies, and George sinks all his money into one last epic silent film, while Peppy becomes a star in the new era. John Goodman co-stars as the head of the film studio working with Valentin. Two mismatched wolves embark on a cross-country quest to get back home and restore peace in their pack after being relocated thousands of miles away by well-meaning park rangers. Quick-witted Humphrey (voice of Justin Long) likes to frolic with friends and play video games with squirrels; disciplined Kate (voice of Hayden Panettiere) likes to call the shots and hunt caribou. Normally, an omega wolf like Humphrey would never stand a chance with an alpha wolf like Kate, but when they're both transported halfway across the country they must work together to get back to their natural habitat. And it won't be easy either, because the one thing Humphrey and Kate can agree on is that they don't have anything in common. Perhaps by working together toward a common goal, however, the two contentious traveling companions will finally realize that even lone wolves can use a helping paw every once in a while. If nothing else, quarterlife represented an historical watershed between over-the-air television and the Internet: for the first time, a live-action network TV program was fashioned from an entertainment series originally produced for on-line consumption. Described as a "new internet series and social network", quarterlife debuted November 11, 2007 on MySpaceTV.com. Produced by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, the same people responsible for the 1990s network hit thirtysomething (note the lower-case titles in both instances), the original Internet version--which had initially been shopped to ABC--consisted of 36 eight-minute serialized vignettes. These were offered in the form of a blog created by "twentysomething" magazine employee Dylan (Bitsie Tulloch, who also served as narrator). Allegedly, none of Dylan's friends or coworkers were aware that she was maintaining an on-line chronicle of their lives and adventures, allowing her to embellish and editorialize to her heart's content. Among those with whom Dylan networked were would-be filmmaker Danny (David Walton and his business partner Jed (Scott Michael Foster, the latter preferring to be identified by his e-mail moniker "jebberland"; Danny's girlfriend Debra (Michael Lombardo), for whom Jed harbored a hopeless yearning; and Lise (Maite Schwartz), a wannabe actress who worked as a bartender and canoodled with practically every guy she met. By MySpace.com standards, quarterlife was a slick and polished effort; less so was the 30-minute NBC network series of the same name, which was comprised of highlights from the on-line version and as such did not quite come up to the high production values of the network's other offerings. An interracial couple moves into their California dream home, only to find themselves the target of their volatile next-door neighbor -- a racist LAPD officer -- in this tightly wound thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington. Newlyweds Chris and Lisa seem like they have the perfect marriage and now, with their new home in the exclusive community Lakeview Terrace, the perfect life as well, but things soon turn ugly in the posh neighborhood when they begin to receive threats from their neighbor Abel, a middle-aged LAPD officer who has obvious objections to the couple's interracial marriage. What starts as an attitude problem soon morphs into full-on harassment, and before long the couple finds that their worries go far beyond their property values -- or the encroaching California wildfire burning in view of their community -- as they begin to fear for their lives. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
