Prison chicks provide the basis for this exploitation film. The tale centers on two young women, one a naive, star-struck midwestern girl, and the other a savvy hitcher, who head for Tinseltown in search of stardom only to find themselves appearing in a soft-core porno flick. Unfortunately they end up arrested and thrown in prison where they are abused by the ubiquitous overbearing chief lesbian guard who forces inmates to become sexual slaves for the millionaires who frequent the penitentiary. Meanwhile, the naive girl's sister refuses to believe the claim that her sister is in Mexico shooting a film, and goes to LA to investigate the situation herself. Roger Corman's production company does it again with this fast-paced, funny send-up of grade "B" movie-making. Like the first Hollywood Boulevard, this story is set at the kitschiest production company in Tinsel Town, Miracle Pictures. The trouble begins during the filming of Barbarian Goddesses of the Amazon It seems someone has been bumping off the studio's buxom starlets. Poor studio head Max Miranda is frantic to find new ones. When toothsome Candy Chandler slinks in, someone mistakes her for an extra and rushes her into the set for Barbarian, where Max becomes instantly enamored and begins promising her that she will be the studio's brightest young star, something that doesn't set well with jealous diva Mary Randolph. In Body Double, director Brian DePalma pays homage to the Alfred Hitchcock movies Vertigo and Rear Window, adding a few grotesque touches all his own. Craig Wasson plays Jake, a struggling actor who keeps losing jobs because of his claustrophobia. To make matters worse, his girlfriend has walked out on him, so he has no place to sleep. His pal offers him the use of his apartment for the evening. The apartment happens to be equipped with a huge picture window and telescope, enabling him to spy on his beautiful neighbor Gloria (Deborah Shelton) while she undresses. He also bears witness to her brutal murder. And then he meets a porn star (Melanie Griffith), who has just taken a job posing as the late Gloria. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
