Emilio Sagi's unusual stage production of Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville unearths the comic aspects of the original work and opts for flashy set design, full of blindingly bright pop color and a circus-like atmosphere, and interpreted by an all-Hispanic cast. The story remains essentially unchanged: Count Almaviva - set on wooing the stunning Rosina - receives assistance from the title character, also known as Figaro. The barber helps Almaviva pull Rosina away from her guardian, Dr. Bartolo. Juan Diego Florez stars as Almaviva, Maria Bayo as Rosina, and Pietro Spagnoli as Figaro. One of the late 19th and early 20th century composer Giacomo Puccini's operatic masterworks, Tosca receives a new interpretation in this stage production mounted by Nuria Espert and filmed at the Teatro Real in January 2004 on high-definition video. The now age-old story, by Victorien Sardu, unfolds around 1800 in Rome. The premise involves a series of political intrigues that spring up when Floria Tosca falls in love with Mario Cavaradossi, a painter who has illegally assisted her brother Cesare Angelotti in escaping from the malevolent police chief Scarpia. Hot on the trail of Angelotti,Scarpia arrests Cavaradossi and refuses to release him unless Tosca accedes to his amorous demands; a number of betrayals and homicides follow. In this production, acclaimed soprano Daniela Dessi interprets the role of Tosca, with Fabio Armiliato as Cavaradossi, Ruggero Raimondi as Scarpia, and Marco Spotti as Angelotti. The Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Real, Madrid provide musical accompaniment. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

In this provocative, suspenseful drama, a penniless aspiring painter receives an offer he cannot refuse and ultimately finds himself making a devil's bargain. Essentially a variation on "Faust," the tale is set in Rome and begins at an art show. Like the other artists, Nicolas Morgan hopes that the show will bring him success. The mysterious and dapper Bellisle sees his work, realizes that Morgan will do anything for wealth and fame, and offers to help him out. That night Bellisle calls Morgan and demands he witness a teen's fatal leap from a window. The tragedy inspires the artist and the resulting painting makes a splash in the Roman art world. Next, Morgan is at a sporting event and witnesses a terrible accident which he also captures on canvas. More gruesome coincidences occur and each results in a painting. Soon he finds himself the toast of wealthy art patrons. Meanwhile, police detective Marc Lauzon becomes interested in the artist's relationship to the sudden string of tragedies. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This is a highly adapted cinematic rendition of the great Russian opera Boris Godunov (1874), originally composed by Modest Mussorgsky (and later modified by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Dmitri Shostakovich and others). The opera is based on a play by the great Russian dramatist Alexander Pushkin. It tells a story of tragic proportions about a 16th century Czar of Russia. With so many culture heroes involved in one monolithic musical masterpiece (it is quite long), it is little wonder that any attempt to adapt it to the screen or change the focus of the original is likely to provoke howls of outrage from devotees of the original opera. That is precisely what happened with this well-intentioned international production. In addition to cutting over an hour out of the original production, it spends a great deal of time on the bedroom exploits of the various characters in the story. There is also some anachronistic material included that is intended to heighten the political commentary that is already present in the original opera. In the story, which is too long and involved to do more than summarize here, the tumultuous reign of the capable but ruthless Russian Czar Boris Godunov is narrated from the time he accepts the crown to his death. The Czar's brief reign (1598-1605) is characterized by intrigues, plots, betrayals, attempted coups, murders, and nearly every kind of calamity that can befall a leader. His only comfort is that he can bequeath his unruly empire to his son on his deathbed. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The second of Franco Zeffirelli's filmed operas (it was originally made for TV), La Boheme is of course based on the masterwork by Giacomo Puccini, itself based on a novel by Henri Murger. Mirella Freni plays the tragic Mimi, who is devoted to fickle "starving artist" Rodolfo (Gianni Raimondi). Adriana Martino has most of the best scenes--and steals those that she hasn't--in the role of the coquettish Musetta. The film's style was dictated by Zeffirelli's staging of La Boheme at Milan's La Scala opera house. Herbert von Karajan wields the baton for this sumptuous stage-to-screen event. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This French sex farce is translated in English as The Trout. She decides to leave him and the trout farm for the city; she wants to make her living in the financial sector. She ends up in a cutthroat corporate world and meets up with the sophisticated Lou (the legendary Jeanne Moreau). Georges Bizet's 1875 opera about Carmen, the colorful cigarette factory worker whose flirtations with the soldier Don José are forgotten in her love for the matador Escamillo, is the source for director Francesco Rosi's cinematic version of the same story. Plácido Domingo sings the part of Don José, Julia Migenes-Johnson sings Carmen, and Ruggero Raimondi is Escamillo. Although there is nothing to fault in the singing itself, some viewers may feel that director Rosi has stayed closer to a stage production than the medium of film would warrant. Carmen received the 1984 Cesar award for "Best Sound." ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

With Life is a Bed of Roses, filmmaker Alain Resnais wanted to create a lighthearted tribute to three important French directors, each of whom defined a particular era in his country's cinema Melies (the first French filmmaker to use narrative--his most famous film is A Trip to the Moon), the impressionist L'Herbier (most famous for his inspirational avant garde work during the '20s) and Rohmer (most famed for his sextet of "Moral Tales" during the '60s). To present his chronicle of the human quest for a utopia of personal happiness and fulfillment, Resnais created two distinct narratives representing the past and present, and then interspliced them with a third more fantastical tale to provide contrast. Representing the past, the first tale centers on a monied eccentric who creates a "temple of happiness' in his chateau. There, guests are given a special potion, laid inside enormous cribs and surrounded by pleasant sensations to help them return to the blissful state of infancy. The second story takes place in the same chateau where a symposium on the techniques and philosophies of the eccentric are hotly debated and elaborated upon. Weaving its way between the two tales is the third, which represents the medieval fantasies of children in a forest who imagine the struggle between a wicked king and a brave good-hearted warrior. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Joseph Losey's 1979 film adaptation of the Mozart opera Don Giovanni adheres faithfully to the original Lorenzo Da Ponte libretto, with rakish Don Giovanni (Ruggero Raimondi) putting the make on the aristocratic Dona Anna (Edda Moser). Giovanni's enemies warn him that he'll suffer mightily for his amorous escapades. And when the gates of hell open up on cue in the last act, and Don Giovanni is dragged screaming into perdition, it turns out those enemies were right. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
