On television, Pays appeared in both the pilot and the subsequent BBC sci-fi/comedy series Max Headroom (1987) with Matt Frewer. She also appeared in both the pilot and the series for the comic book-style adventure The Flash (1990-1991) and its sequel. She has also performed in a CD-ROM release, Privateer 2: The Darkening. Both Pays' parents, Howard Pays and Joan Miller, are actors. Pays is married to television actor Corbin Bernsen. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Filmed in Tunisia on a budget of 30 million dollars, the five-part, 12-hour miniseries A.D. was the final installment in a historical trilogy which included Moses the Lawgiver and Jesus of Nazareth. Covering the years 30 to 69 A.D., the teleplay, co-written by Anthony Burgess, chronicled the political intrigue which plagued the Roman Empire, with such key players as the emperors Tiberius (James Mason in his final role), Caligula (John McEnery), Claudius (Richard Kiley), and Nero (Anthony Andrews) calling the shots. Meanwhile, the death of Jesus Christ (played by Michael Wilding, son of Elizabeth Taylor) not only sparked a widespread monotheistic religious movement, but also resulted in devastating factionalism amongst the various Jewish sects of the era. Offsetting the true events are a number of fictional subplots, among them the romance between Jewish slave girl Sarah (Amanda Pays) and Roman soldier Valerius (Neil Dickson), and the tempestuous relationship between male and female gladiators, Caleb (Cecil Humphreys) and Corinna (Diana Venora). The huge cast included Ava Gardner, making her TV-movie debut as the scheming Agrippina. The winner of an Emmy award for Best Film Editing, A.D. was broadcast by NBC from March 31 through April 4, 1985. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Actress Amanda Pays introduces novices to the world of computer animation. What we have here is essentially a glorified instructional tape, but Pays is enthusiastic, so attention must be paid. As expected, there is palaver aplenty about drive, ram, bytes, and so forth. We also go "inside" computer workings, which was still relatively new cinematic gimmick in 1987. Because of the huge technological advances since 1987, Computer Dreams is currently about 300 years out of date. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Leviathan, a sci-fi thriller directed by George Pan Cosmatos, is the story of a group of scientists who discover a sunken Russian submarine which contains a monster that is the product of a genetic experiment. This film, a hybrid of both The Abyss and Alien, has a decent cast, including Peter Weller as Beck, the lead oceanographer. Working with a good budget, action director Cosmatos, should have been able to put together better action sequences and a more frightening monster, but he gives this derivative, silly film below-par special effects and no particular visual style. Leviathan, while it may entertain a less-sophisticated viewer, has little to offer fans of the genre who are looking for thrilling special effects. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

This is an uneven modern remake of A Yank at Oxford (1938) from writer-director Robert Boris, the man behind such diverse earlier productions as Some Kind of Hero (1981) and Doctor Detroit (1983). Rob Lowe stars as Nick Di Angelo, an American hustler and parking attendant in Las Vegas who falls in love at first sight with a beautiful, classy British woman, Lady Victoria (Amanda Pays). He follows her back to England and learns that she is a student at the prestigious Oxford University. Intent on wooing the object of his affection despite their obviously different locations in the social strata, Nick manages to finagle his way into an admission at the school by paying a computer hacker for some illegal tampering. With his arrogant manner and self-centered worldview, Nick quickly offends nearly everyone he encounters, except fellow American expatriate Rona (Ally Sheedy), who becomes his only friend. Nick also secures a spot on the rowing team, an experience that builds his character. A typical example of the mid-'80s "Rat Pack" film, Oxford Blues featured a soundtrack with several forgettable rock songs written expressly for the movie, interjected at intervals into the narrative through music video-style sequences. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Most TV movie reference books have given up mentioning the hundreds of unsold pilots that dot the video landscape. Parker Kane, originally telecast in 1990 and then rerun in 1992, is one of those orphans that has fallen through the research cracks. It's possible the film is due for a revival thanks to the present-day popularity of its star Jeff Fahey. Fahey plays Parker Kane, a cop turned private eye. Always a maverick, albeit an honest one, Kane supersedes the authority of his p.i. license when a close friend is murdered. The trail of clues leads to a major-scale scam involving the dumping of toxic waste. Guest star Patti LaBelle plays a nightclub singer during the less hectic moments of Parker Kane. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This chilling made-for-cable production stars winsome Amanda Pays as a prissy English college student who accompanies her estranged father (George Segal) to East Germany in an attempt to reconcile their differences. Shortly after her arrival, she begins to experience intense feelings of cold and dread in their flat -- which eventually progress into strange mental fugues wherein she is apparently transported to the era of Nazi occupation. As her perception of the present begins to unravel, she is thrust into a harrowing adventure involving a young anti-Nazi activist who is being hunted by Hitler's SS. Whether these time-slips are a product of her deteriorating sanity or the result of an actual rift in time is never fully explained -- until the effective climax, in which the parallel storylines intersect. Despite a few vague stretches and some unresolved plot holes, this is overall a well-crafted thriller which plays like a slick feature-length episode of The Twilight Zone. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Based on the comic-strip character created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert, The Flash was a briefly popular fantasy-adventure TV series which ran from September 20, 1990, to July 19, 1991. John Wesley Shipp stars as police chemist Barry Allen, who, after being struck by a lightning bolt and doused with chemicals, transformed into The Flash, the fastest human being on earth. He was so fast at times that his movements were invisible to the human eye. In typical superhero fashion, the Flash was often pitted against colorfully costumed supervillains. Flash 2: Revenge of the Trickster is comprised of two hour-long Flash episodes, both starring Mark Hamill as a crazed magician turned master criminal. The feminine interest is provided by Amanda Pays as Tina McGee, the only person who knows that Barry Allen and Flash are one in the same. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A scientist discovers that he isn't an only child in this effects-laden creature feature whose cast includes screen veterans Kim Hunter and Rod Steiger among a host of other, less well-known performers. John Hollins (David Allen Brooks) is delighted to learn that his geneticist mother, Amanda (Hunter), has awoken from her coma years after she suffered a horrible car crash. During their reunion, he learns that she was trying to put an end to a misguided experiment at her home on the night of the accident. Before losing consciousness, Amanda reveals that John has a brother named Anthony. Later, she's murdered by Dr. Phillip Lloyd (Rod Steiger), an old colleague who wants to uncover the secrets of her research. John travels to his large, run-down boyhood home with his girlfriend, a group of pals, and a mysterious acolyte of his mother's named Melissa (Amanda Pays); the group plans to search for clues about Amanda's research and John's supposed sibling. The young scientist soon ascertains that his mother had created some sort of human/aquatic hybrid, but he doesn't realize that the creature was assembled from his own genetic material -- or that it's still alive in the bowels of the house and picking off his friends one at a time. Meanwhile, something's fishy with Melissa, who skulks around, doesn't sleep, tries to seduce John, covers up details of the attacks on his friends, and seems to have some sort of connection to Dr. Lloyd. Co-directors Jeffrey Obrow and Stephen W. Carpenter previously collaborated on the slasher quickie The Dorm That Dripped Blood and on The Power, a made-for-TV horror film. Pays would go on to co-star in the similarly aquatic sci-fi film Leviathan. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi
