Singer-cum-actress Lucy Hale broke into show business courtesy of participation in the Fox network's short-lived, competitive reality series American Juniors (2003) -- a one-season spin-off of American Idol (with an identical setup and format) that had children and young teenagers vying with one another for pop stardom. Hale subsequently moved into acting, with a guest spot on the series How I Met Your Mother (as Robin's younger sister) and a regular role, as Becca Sommers (the computer hacker younger sister of Jaime Sommers), on the short-lived sci-fi series revival Bionic Woman (2007). A Yale-educated journalist goes from working at a tabloid to living the good life in Palm Beach after losing her job and landing a gig as live in tutor for the teenage granddaughters of a wealthy cosmetics mogul all in the course of one whirlwind day. Megan Smith (JoAnna Garcia) is in the early stages of her plan to conquer the world of journalism when she is suddenly informed that she no longer has a job. Shortly after getting fired, however, Megan meets cosmetics mogul Laurel Limoges (Anne Archer), who is currently seeking to hire a tutor for her teenage granddaughters Rose (Lucy Kate Hale) and Sage (Ashley Newbrough). Beautiful, rebellions, and completely abhorred by their optimistic new tutor, Rose and Sage discover just how determined Megan is to succeed in her new job when she attempts to lay down the law and see that the haughty young socialites receive a proper education. Of course the fact that Megan now lives in a breathtaking suite, drives an expensive convertible, and has her own private chef (Allan Louis) is enough to offset the constant scorn she receives from her two young charges, but what of handsome and wealthy next door dilettante Will (Brian Hallisay), who obviously has eyes for Megan despite the fact that he's dating her estranged sister Lily (Kristina Apgar)? Meanwhile, Megan's best friend Charlie (Michael Cassidy) pines for her in silence while attempting to summon the courage to express his true feelings. The 2008 sequel to the female buddy film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants constitutes an adaptation of Ann Brashares' novel Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood. Like the premier installment, this picture explores the seriocomic events that unfold one summer in the lives of four temporarily estranged friends as an extremely special pair of jeans works its way from one girl to the next. In one subplot, Lena (Alexis Bledel) travels to Providence, RI, and enrolls in a painting course; in another, Bridget (Blake Lively) embarks on an archaeological excavation in Greece; in a third, Carmen (America Ferrera) works on the backstage crew for a Vermont-based theater festival; and in the fourth, Tibby remains in New York and enrolls in summer courses. A remake of the popular 1970s fantasy/adventure series of the same name, NBC's Bionic Woman starred Michelle Ryan as Jaime Sommers, the character originally played by Lindsay Wagner. In the earlier series, Jaime was a professional athlete; in the new version, she was a bartender and soon-to-be unwed mother. No matter: In both instances, Jaime was involved in a terrible accident which required emergency surgery--and a complete electronic overhaul. At the behest of her boyfriend Dr. Anthros (Chris Bowers), the first of several characters created for the remake, Jaime was rushed to a secret research lab, where she was outfitted with a pair of bionic legs and a bionic right arm, both of which provided super-strength and the ability to run in slow motion (representing extraordinary speed). She also was endowed with super-hearing skills--and, in an improvement over the original series, a new bionic eye (needless to say, the bill for all this retooling was considerably higher than the six-million-dollar price tag in the earlier show). Whereas the 1970s edition of Bionic Woman was, for all its gimmickry, a fairly straightforward action-adventure offering, the remake bore the heavy influence of 24 and Lost, accommodating a plethora of mysterious conspiracies and sinister secrets which weaved their way through the proceedings, with bits and pieces of vital information revealed on a "need-to-know" basis. There was also a soupcon of the Spiderman movie formula, with a dash of Smallville folded in, as Jamie slowly, awkwardly and sometimes painfully adjusted to her new and awesome powers, and to the responsiblities and consequences attached to them. The cast of characters in the new Bionic Woman included Jonas Bledsoe (Miguel Ferrer), the enigmatic (and slightly satanic) head of the Bionics research program; Ruth Truewell (Molly Price), Bledsoe's slightly more scrupulous assistant; maverick "program advisor" Antonio Pope (Isaiah Washington), the resident "I know more than I'm letting on" guy; and Jaime's computer-hacker sister Becca (Lucy Hale), who was always in trouble with the cops.
