Orestes (Daniel Olbrychski) is a moody fellow, and the state of the society around him makes him even moodier. He has even given up on leftist causes. He is, however, the leader of a group of similarly disillusioned fellows. His moodiness has isolated him from his family and children, and it is with some relief for him and his family that a series of crimes suspected of being done by leftists has resulted in his imprisonment. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Produced, directed and written in his traditionally episodic fashion by Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos, the internationally produced Landscape in the Mist concentrates on a pair of runaway children, played by Tania Palaiogou and Michalis Zeke. The kids are en route to Germany, where they believe their father is dwelling. The adventures during their trek range from heartwarming (the kids are briefly "adopted" by a group of itinerant actors and by affable cyclist Stratos Tzortzoglou) and harrowing (Palaiogou is raped by a callous truck driver). The film's title refers to the kids' perception of the "promised land" of Germany. Landscape in the Mist was the recipient of numerous festival awards, including the 1988 Venice Film Festival Silver Lion. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a beguiling story about a lovely fairy, her sister-fairies, and the adventures of a young boy whose heart belongs to these winged creatures. The "Enchantress" is said to appear regularly at a nearby spring, and only at night. After the young boy sees her and is captivated, he gets permission from his father to leave home and sets forth to explore haunted castles and find multiple treasures, assisted by the fairies who know about these things. The young boy returns home and even after he grows up and marries, he does not lose interest in looking for the Enchantress one more time. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In a complex interweaving of drama, history and allegory, this Greek film tells the story of the tours of a theatrical troupe along the Greek isles between 1939 and 1952. In each town, the troupe enacts the play "Golfo the Shepherdess." Simultaneously, an actress in the troupe is searching for a way to exact vengeance against her mother whom she believes was responsible for the death of her father. Her brother, a resistance fighter, helps her accomplish this. This level of the story re-creates, in "real life," the classical Greek drama of the Orestaia. At the same time, Greece is fully embroiled in the Second World War, political struggles, and its own Civil War. This film exists in several versions: the one which is 230 minutes long is the original, preferred version. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
