William Bendix Movies

William Bendix made a career out of playing lovable big lugs, although he also occasionally got to play sinister and tragic roles with equal success. He was born in New York City, in a cold-water flat at Third Avenue and 45th Street in 1906, the only son of Oscar Bendix and the former Hilda Carnell. Oscar Bendix was a musician who played in local bands, including one led by Arthur Pryor, while an uncle, Max, was a violinist in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra -- but William's interest in music was solely as a listener. He was raised in the Bronx, and graduated from P.S. 5, later attending Townsend Harris High School, where his main interests lay in sports, especially baseball. He was later a bat boy at the Polo Grounds, at a time when both the New York Giants and the New York Yankees played there, and his job only ended when the Yankees, in a dispute with their landlords the Giants, pulled up stakes to build Yankee Stadium as their new home. Acting was in Bendix's background, however -- he'd started at age five, when his father, while working as a handyman at the Vitagraph Studios, got the boy a job in a silent production. Bendix fit occasional acting work in between odd jobs, including work as a singing waiter, but it was only after visiting the Henry Street Settlement on New York's Lower East Side that he began taking acting seriously, and he became a member of the Henry Street Players. In his early twenties, with help from his new father-in-law, he became manager of a grocery store in Newark, NJ, and this was how Bendix earned his living for the next few years. He later worked in the Federal Theater Project in New Jersey, and it was through that association that he was seen by Cheryl Crawford, who got him into a half-dozen of the Theater Guild's productions. Those were short-running plays that didn't do Bendix any direct good, but then he was cast in the role of Policeman Krupp in William Saroyan's play The Time of Your Life. That production ran for two years on Broadway and gave Bendix an acting career -- he was subsequently signed by producer Hal Roach to a film contract.

Bendix was a success in his first role, as a tavernkeeper in the romantic comedy Woman of the Year (1942). He received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in 20th Century Fox's Wake Island, and went on to perform in Guadalcanal Diary, playing a similar likable Brooklyn-accented GI. Bendix was soon the most prominent of a cadre of Hollywood actors who specialized in that kind of role, and included Dewey Robinson and Dick Wesson. But unlike Robinson and Wesson, who usually played bit and supporting roles, Bendix was usually a leading man and even something of a star in the movies in which he worked. Bendix was the dumb detective-sergeant foil to Lou Costello in Who Done It?, and the disturbed, possibly homicidal war veteran pal to Alan Ladd in The Blue Gardenia, one of several roles that he played with Ladd, an extension of a friendship that began on the set of The Glass Key (1942). Ladd and Bendix were doing a scene in that movie in which the latter's character had to pummel the star; Bendix ended up accidentally pounding Ladd for real, and out of his concern for the other actor and their superb work together, a close friendship was born. Bendix was also the lovable, gullible sailor in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat, possibly his best-known movie today. Bendix got starring roles in a handful of movies, most notably Jules Levy's production of The Hairy Ape (1944) and The Babe Ruth Story (1948). His portrayal of Hank Smith in The Hairy Ape, from the Eugene O'Neill play, might be Bendix's best work onscreen, while the role of Babe Ruth was one to which he resonated personally, having known the legendary Yankee (although the movie itself is regarded as among the worst sports biographies, and among the worst biographical films ever to come out of Hollywood). Despite these starring parts, Bendix was most widely seen in key supporting roles, such as the brutal private investigator in The Dark Corner (1946) or the larcenous army investigator in The Big Steal (1949). He even got to do a comic turn in a period piece, portraying Sir Sagramore in A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court (1949). During the 1940s, Bendix also took on the role that would make him a millionaire. As Chester A. Riley, the lovable but hapless family man and factory worker on The Life of Riley on the radio, he became a star in that medium, and he eventually did the role in movies and took over the part for television as well, where he became a small-screen star during the first half of the 1950s. For all of his success in movies and on television, however, Bendix preferred working on the stage, which he found the most fulfilling medium to work in, and he devoted himself to theater work during the second half of the 1950s and the early '60s. He made very few film appearances after playing a key co-starring role in Josef von Sternberg's Macao (1952), and in the second half of the 1950s did less than one movie a year. He did television work, including one-shot appearances on anthology shows such as Screen Directors' Playhouse (in which he portrayed Dennis Hopper's sandhog father in a drama entitled High Air); and he later co-starred with Doug McClure in a short-lived Western series called Overland Trail in 1960. There he finds that his infant son has grown into a thuggish hellion who has been lead to believe that his mother is dead. He also hates the father who left him. The mother isn't dead. She works as a saloon keeper, but her son doesn't recognize her. The father and son end up staging a showdown, and the father quickly outdraws his son. Later, the Dawsons catch up to the gunfighter. His son plans to do nothing to save him, but then he learns that his father left because his mother had cheated upon him. The 3D melodrama Dangerous Mission starts off with a bang when innocent Piper Laurie inadvertently witnesses the murder of her gangster boss. Though she doesn't get a particularly good look at the killer, she knows she's dead meat if she remains in town. Thus, Laurie skeedaddles to Montana's Glacier National Park, where most of the film takes place. Following her westward are Victor Mature and Vincent Price. One of these men is a federal agent, bound and determined to bring Laurie back to the East to testify; the other is the murderer, who intends to silence our heroine for keeps. Laurie doesn't know which is which, but the audience does. A bit poky at times (thanks in part to the uninspired editing of Gene Palmer), Dangerous Mission roars into life during a mid-film forest fire and a climactic chase through the glacier fields. If you thought that Newton's "Arr, matey"s got out of hand in Treasure Island, wait til you see this one. The plot concerns the efforts of the British admirality to bring Blackbeard to justice. To that end, officer Keith Andes allows himself to be abducted by the pirate's minions. Also captured by Blackbeard is luscious Linda Darnell, the adopted daughter of Andes' superior Torin Thatcher. When it turns out that everyone is being double-crossed by the insidious Thatcher, all Technicolor hell breaks loose. William Bendix costars as Blackbeard's chief henchman, appearing to be a model of subtlety when compared to his costar. The tendency is to scoff at Macao as just another example of Josef von Sternberg's late-career exercises in exoticism; true, it has its problems, including a weak plot and a slightly hasty pace, but it is still an extraordinary film for its time and its personnel. The real sparkplug for the movie is Jane Russell as out-of-work singer Julie Benson, who inadvertently gets the plot rolling when she ends up in a cabin with a lout who won't take no for an answer. Her plight, and a flying shoe, brings in laconic, slightly mysterious traveler Nick Cochran (Robert Mitchum), who seems to have something to hide and manages to get his wallet (including passport) lifted by the opportunistic Julie. Crossing paths with them is Lawrence Trumble (William Bendix), a good-natured lunkhead salesman coming to Macao for the gambling. And gambling, among other less legal activities, is what local hood Halloran (Brad Dexter) is all about. He's just hot enough in international crime circles to attract the authorities, who can't touch him in Macao; he's already had one New York detective killed and expects another to arrive, and he's keeping an eye on any suspicious, unfamiliar Westerners arriving, which leads him to Julie, Cochran, and Trumble. Halloran has other, obvious plans for Julie, especially when obliging corrupt police chief Thomas Gomez points her to a singing job at his club, much to the distress of his one-time girlfriend (Gloria Grahame); he dismisses Trumble as a lovable clown. But Nick has cop written all over him and is hiding something. All of the pieces fit together neatly in the end, and everyone is keeping at least one secret that will surprise viewers.

What makes Macao truly special are the performances, beginning with Jane Russell, who, with the possible exception of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, was never better. Her ample physical assets are on display as usual, but she also never gave a sharper, more naturalistic or purely sensual acting performance. Russell had clearly found her talent and her center with this film. Whether she's shooting a suspicious glance at larcenous police chief Thomas Gomez, singing a sultry torch song in a seductive white strapless outfit, or striding forward in an exquisite dolly-out shot, she commands every scene in which she appears. And it's not just her imposing physique that does it, but a boldness of nuance; Russell had learned a lot since The Outlaw. Brad Dexter, the odd man out in The Magnificent Seven, makes an excellent villain, like a more pathological version of Steve Cochran. Meanwhile, Robert Mitchum, in his portrayal of a neurotic, perhaps shell-shocked veteran, shows a vulnerable side that seldom came out so convincingly or touchingly in his RKO movies; and even William Bendix found a new wrinkle to his screen persona as the seemingly larcenous commercial traveler. The audience will be beguiled and surprised throughout this movie -- an underrated noir classic -- and not just by the stories that unravel. The last line and wrap shot create an amazingly lusty, censor-challenging denouement for an early '50s film. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Sidney Kingsley's Broadway play Detective Story was praised for its realistic view of an event-filled day in a single police precinct station. The film, directed by meticulous taskmaster William Wyler, manages to retain this realism, even allowing for the star-turn performance of Kirk Douglas. A stickler for the letter of the law, Detective James McLeod (Douglas) is not averse to using strong-arm methods on criminals and witnesses alike in bringing lawbreakers to justice. He is particularly rough on a first-time offender (Craig Hill), on whom the rest of the force is willing to go easy because of the anguish of his girlfriend (Cathy O'Donnell). But McLeod's strongest invective is reserved for shady abortion doctor Karl Schneider (George MacReady); McLeod all but ruins the case against Schneider by beating him up in the patrol wagon. When McLeod discovers that his own wife (Eleanor Parker) had many years earlier lost a baby in one of Schneider's operations, and that the baby's father was gangster Tami Giacoppetti (Gerald Mohr), it is too much for the detective to bear. Punctuating the grim proceedings with brief moments of humor is future Oscar winner Lee Grant, reprising her stage role as a timorous shoplifter; it would be her last Hollywood assignment until the early 1960s, thanks to the iniquities of the blacklist. Despite small concessions to Hollywood censorship, Detective Story largely upheld the power of its theatrical original, and it forms a clear precursor to such latter-day urban police dramas as NYPD Blue. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The unique comic talents of Groucho Marx, William Bendix and Marie Wilson are hardly exploited to their fullest in RKO's A Girl in Every Port. Groucho and Bendix play Benny Linn and Tim Dunnevan, respectively, a couple of scheming sailors who embark upon one get-rich-quick scheme after another. This time around, our heroes use a small inheritance to purchase two horses, one for racing purposes and one to be sold at a tidy profit. After a series of bizarre complications, both horses are pitted against each other in a crucial race which could spell either triumph or ruin for the two goofy gobs. Wilson co-stars as a birdbrained carhop who owns one of the horses coveted by Linn and Dunnevan. No stone is left unturned so far as wheezy comedy routines are concerned: writer-director Chester Erskine even manages to revive the old chestnut wherein the sailors sneak both horses on board their ship. The likeable supporting cast includes Don DeFore as a disgruntled stable owner, Dee Hartford (who later became Groucho Marx's sister-in-law) as DeFore's financially savvy fiancee, Gene Lockhart as a seedy horse dealer, Hanley Stafford ("Daddy" on radio's Baby Snooks) as the two protagonists' flustered commanding officer, and Teddy Hart as a Runyonesque gangster. His civic responsibilities awakened by pretty social worker Lynn Warren (Terry Moore), Fury does an 180-degree turnaround, going so far as to shake down underworld kingpin Joe Farrow (William Bendix) for $50,000, which he promptly donates to a patriotic organization headed by Warren.
