2007

A young woman learns not to let anyone's opinions of her get in the way of her dreams in this drama. Pian (Zhu Xiaopian) is fourteen years old and growing up in a small village in Southern China. A nationwide dance competition is taking place, and Pian wants nothing more than to represent her village in the contest. However, the judges aren't interested in choosing her; one of them informs her that tall, slender girls are best suited for dancing, and Pian would have to lose some weight if she's to be a serious competitor. However, if the judge thought this would dissuade Pian, he seriously underestimated her determination, as she works tirelessly to get in shape and sharpen her skills. Unfortunately, Pian's hard work begins to get in the way of her school work, and while her teacher is sympathetic, she tries to convince Pian that an education is every bit as important as winning the dance competition. Kaishui yao tang guniang yao zhuang (aka I Want To Dance) was written and directed by Hu Shu, who previously distinguished himself as a documentary filmmaker and grew up in the Southern Chinese Miao regions where the story is set. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
