Jorge Negrete Movies
Born into a military family (his father was an officer in the Mexican revolution), Jorge Negrete attended the Mexican equivalent of West Point from 1925 to 1928. Upon graduation, however, Negrete became fascinated with music, taking singing lessons from the celebrated Jose Pierson. While still in his very early twenties, he became a star on clear-channel radio station XER, performing a mixture of Mexican and Cuban songs. Known to his fans as "El Charro Cantor," he made his first film in 1937, then headlined a Spanish-language network program in North America. His only Hollywood appearance was in the 1947 MGM musical
Fiesta. Jorge Negrete was married to singer Elisa Chrisy and to Mexican film luminary
Maria Felix, who became his widow when he died of cirrhosis at the age of 42. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Director Fernando De Fuentes adapted the screenplay of Asi se Quiere en Jalisco (Love in Jalisco) from his own stage play. Maria Elene Marques stars as Lupe, who is strongarmed by her family into marrying wealthy ranchowner Don Luis (Carlos Moctezuma). Instead, she offers to work off her family's debts by taking a job as Don Luis' housemaid. Despite the lecherous advances of her employer, Lupe remains faithful to her true love, poor-but-honest Juan Ramon (Jorge Negrete). Though more lighthearted than ealrier De Fuentes efforts, this film is faithful to the director's long-standing theory that Mexico would be better off if the wealthy landowners would mind their own business. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Seda, Sangre y Sol (Silk, Sunshine and Blood) is a bullfighting picture, which in 1942 meant instant money in the bank for its Mexican producers. The novelty here is that all three participants in a romantic triangle are also dedicated to fighting bulls. Real-life matador Pepe Ortiz spends most of the film vying with Jorge Negrete over the affections of Gloria Marin, who isn't really a bullfighter but plays one in the movies. Much is made of the ritualistic mysticism of the bullring, which obviously meant more to Mexican audiences than it did to North Americans. The principal virtue of Seda, Sangre y Sol is the superb cinematography, which went uncredited in the English-language prints. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Hal Roach's first Technicolor production was the 48-minute musical Fiesta. The story takes place on the Mexican ranch owned by Don Hernandez (Antonio Moreno), whose niece Cholita (Anne Ayers) is returning home to marry local caballero Jose (George Negrete). When Cholita arrives, however, she has a new fiance in tow: pompous radio star Fernando Gomez (George Givot). Unwilling to resort to anything as crass as physical violence, Jose spends the next four reels cooking up schemes to scare Gomez off the property. Like Roach's first "streamlined" musical All-American Co-Ed, Fiesta was directed by choreographer Leroy Prinz. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The title of this Mexican actioner translates roughly as Jalisco, Don't Backslide! Based on the life of "gentleman gunman" Alfonso Alvarez Castillo (more popularly known as "Remington"), the film stars Jorge Negrete as young desperado Salvador Perry Gomez. Left without parents when his ranch is invaded by hired guns during the Mexican Revolution, Gomez turns outlaw in hopes of avenging his mother and father. Less time is spent on Gomez's criminal career than on his romantic dalliances with the gorgeous heroine, played by songstress Gloria Marin. Unlike the ill-fated "Remington," who died three years before this film was made, Gomez manages to survive until fade-out time. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
