Ornella Muti Movies

A model in her adolescence, Italian beauty Ornella Muti posed for illustrated novels before her film bow at age 15. Ornella has worked for such European cinematic greats as Francesco Rosi and Volker Schlondorff; her most celebrated appearances have been in the erotic psychological dramas directed by Marco Ferreri. The bulk of her starring films have borne such come-hither titles as Appasionata and Bilingual Lover. American movie fans got an eyeful of Ornella Muti as the sensuous Princess Aura in 1980's Flash Gordon, while television fans were treated to Ornella's formidable presence in the 1987 TV movie Casanova (1987). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Panni Sporchi is a satiric comedy from veteran director Mario Monicelli about the public and private squabbles of a family-owned cough drop company. The Razzi family's business has been the economic backbone of a small Northern Italian city for years, but when Amedo (Paolo Bonacelli), the aging head of the company, is fast-talked into financing an expensive commercial set in ancient Rome by his nephew Camillo (Francesco Guzzo), war breaks out among the family. Furio (Michele Placido), husband of Amedo's daughter (Mariangela Melato) and second in command of the company, is outraged at the cost of the spot and the bad publicity it receives; he's even more upset when Amedo drops dead and the inept Camillo is handed control of the business. Panni Sporchi stars several noted Italian comic actors, many of whom have worked with Monicelli before; the cast also includes Gigi Proietti and Ornella Muti. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This Italian feature caters to a self-congratulatory stereotype of male virility which many an Italian male might fantasize as being true for himself. Paolo is from the lower ranks of the Sicilian nobility, and he shares his grandfather's penchant for beautiful women. Indeed, he proved his readiness for bedroom sports at age 10, when he beat his grandfather to the bed of a lovely young new house servant. As a grownup, Paolo (Giancarlo Giannini) now lives in Rome and cuts a wide swath through the female population of that town. Though the depiction of his succession of conquests is repetitive, one of the film's highlights is the great beauty of the numerous women he has encounters with. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The Mexican convent of St. Archangelo has a "bad rep" long before Sisters of Satan gets under way. The eponymous sisters don't seem to have a very firm grasp on the concept of giving one's life to one's Lord. When they finally determine that neither God nor the Virgin Mary can satisfy their spiritual needs, the nuns cast about for someone else to worship. That someone, as indicated by the title, is decked out with horns, a tail and cloven hooves. And just how did the lovely and graceful British leading lady Anne Heywood get herself mixed up in this monster rally? (Note how she never lists Sisters of Satan on her resume). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Iranian-born director Ramin Niami loosely adapted the Maxim Gorky play The Lower Depths for this ensemble character study set in modern-day New York City's Lower East Side. Sandra Bernhard stars as Betty, a remarkably introverted and lonely therapist hungering for a male companion. In her apartment building, several other residents also have emotional, career, or romantic issues. Chinese student Lu Lu (Bai Ling) wants to stay in the U.S., so she interviews prospective husbands in hopes of obtaining a green card. Marta (Ornella Muti) is forced to sexually service her building's fat landlord daily in exchange for a free room, but she's in love with Frankie (Robert John Burke), an inept thief. Che (Paul Anthony Stewart) is a rich kid trying to incite a worker's revolt from his basement headquarters, while Graham (Peter Stormare) is a gay Shakespearean actor looking for love. Their stories intersect in the film's finale, which involves the kidnapping of former New York mayor Ed Koch (who plays himself). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

If this is what he thinks it is, Filippo is going to be in trouble. He goes over to meet Alice (Ornella Muti), the lady in question, and instead of sustaining a sense of outrage, he is bowled over by her charm, her beauty, and the poignancy of her story. This ambitious attempt to film a portion of Marcel Proust's epic novel Remembrance of Things Past stars Jeremy Irons as Charles Swann, a Jewish intellectual who has managed to overcome growing anti-Semitism in 19th century France and travels in an elite social circle. But Swann has become obsessed with Odette (Ornella Muti), a courtesan who cares more for money than Swann's passion for her. In time they marry, but Swann soon realizes his desire for her is based purely on physical lust for someone with whom he has no rapport, or even much affection, and the relationship begins to erode the social acceptance Swann struggled to achieve. Meanwhile, the Baron de Charlus (Alain Delon) finds himself similarly attracted to a young man who does not share his desires. Un Amour de Swann was much praised for its production design and the cinematography of frequent Ingmar Bergman collaborator Sven Nykvist, though many felt director Volker Schlondorff failed to capture the narrative depth and complexity of Proust's novel. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Ben Gazzara delivers a gutsy, four-barreled performance as skid-row poet and storyteller Charles Bukowski (rechristened Charles Serking onscreen) in Tales of Ordinary Madness, blackly comic Italian director Marco Ferreri's adaptation of Bukowski's roman à clef Erections, Ejaculations, Exhibitions and General Tales of Ordinary Madness. Half soused, with a 2 a.m. shadow and street urchin rags, Serking waltzes through the scummiest neighborhoods of the City of Angels, indulging in booze, poetry, and copulation, and lounging in flophouses and on grimy public buses. His bedmates are a midget, a string of seedy whores, and various earthy L.A. denizens, played by Susan Tyrell, Ornella Muti, and others; he eventually falls for a prostitute who can express her affection only via self-mutilation. Ferreri lets Bukowski's ribald humor flow throughout and exposes the dark erotic currents at the heart of the author's narratives. Laced with perverse, shocking imagery, this unbridled celebration of life's dark underbelly has been praised by critics such as The New Yorker's Pauline Kael and Playboy's Bruce Williamson for its "genuine audacity and risktaking." ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Gerard Depardieu stars in this made-for-TV adaptation of the classic adventure story by Alexandre Dumas. Edmond (Depardieu) has been held in a French prison for nearly 20 years for daring to love Mercedes (Naike Rivelli), a woman who has also been wooed by a man in power, Mondego (Jean Rochefort). When Abbe (Georges Moustaki), a close friend and fellow prison inmate, is about to die, he tells Edmond of a fortune that he has hidden on the outside. Edmond escapes, finds the money, and assumes the identity of the Count of Monte Cristo. "The Count" uses his new wealth as part of a plan to bring down the men who helped keep him behind bars for so long -- Mondego, his henchman Danglars (Michel Aumont), and Count Morcef (Stanislas Merhar). Produced for French television by a consortium of French, German, and Italian production houses, this version of The Count of Monte Cristo received its American premier on the Bravo cable network. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Actress and filmmaker Asia Argento directed this faithful screen adaptation of the fictional J.T. Leroy's fictional memoir, which documents a boy's truly harrowing road to adulthood. Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett) is the seven-year-old son of Sarah (Asia Argento), an unstable and unwed mother who abandoned her son and left him to be raised by foster parents. Jeremiah has come to love his guardians, and is devastated when Sarah arrives at their doorstep, demanding her child back. Threatening Jeremiah with torture if he tries to run away, Sarah introduces her young son to drugs and encourages her one-night-stand paramours to help "discipline" her son when she feels his behavior is inappropriate. Sarah marries a man named Emerson (Jeremy Renner), but abandons him shortly afterward; Emerson responds by molesting Jeremiah, and soon the child is left in the care of his grandparents (Peter Fonda and Ornella Muti), members of a fundamentalist Christian sect which emphasizes child discipline that's strict to the point of abuse. After three years, Sarah returns with a new husband, Kenny (Matt Schulze), and takes Jeremiah (now played by Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse) with her; Kenny spends most of his time on the road as a trucker, and Sarah supports the family at home as a stripper and a prostitute. Sarah also begins dressing her son is girl's clothing, which excites the perverse appetites of Sarah's latest boyfriend, Jackson (Marilyn Manson); she soon leaves Jackson and pairs off with Chester (Jeremy Sisto), a biker with a dangerous way of making a living. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the "Directors Fortnight" series. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Recalling Werner Herzog's Aguirre: The Wrath of God, acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Miguel Littin directs this sweeping epic about the true-life tale of Romanian engineer Julius Popper and his half-crazed pursuit of gold. Set in 1850, the handsome Romanian rides into a rough and tumble frontier town with his pockets full of gold. He uses his loot to round up dazzled prospectors and seduce hard-bitten brothel owner Armenia (Ornella Muti) into funding his expedition. The band sets off for the rugged South populated by half-naked indigenous people. Claiming the land for the Queen of Romania, Popper captures the Indians as slaves and forces them to mine for gold. They do find a scant amount of gold, which Popper promptly mints into coins bearing his likeness. Popper's second in command, a former Austrian sergeant named Novak (Nelson Villiagra), treats Indians with appalling savagery in the name of civilization, though he develops an odd respect for the tribe's beautiful, thoroughly-tattooed and frequently naked Queen Mennar (Tamara Acosta). As the rainy season sets in, the unpaid miners start to quietly talk of mutiny. Popper makes a bagpiper an example and forces him to play until he keels over. When this fails, Popper offers an ounce of gold for each Indian ear, breast, and testicle. This film was screened at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Un Couple Épatant (An Amazing Couple) is the second installment in the ambitious French-language trilogy directed by Belgian-born filmmaker Lucas Belvaux. Where the first film, Cavale (On the Run), was a film noir thriller, this sequel is a lighthearted romantic comedy in the style of a classic French farce. Schoolteacher Cecile Costes (Ornella Muti) is worried about her husband, Alain (François Morel). He's overly concerned with his physical health and well-being, so much so that he keeps his hospital appointments a secret from his wife. Thinking he's been having an affair, Cecile hires Pascal Manise (Gilbert Melki) to spy on him. Alain then starts to suspect Cecile of being unfaithful, even though he knows Pascal is married to her friend Agnes (Dominique Blanc). An Amazing Couple was following by the third installment in the trilogy, the melodrama Après la Vie (After Life). ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
