A period comedy set in the 1980s, Jonathan Glatzer's What Goes Up tells the poignant story of a morally challenged New York reporter who connects with a group of high school outcasts while in New Hampshire covering the story of Christa McAuliffe, the first civilian astronaut. Arriving in McAullife's hometown, reporter Campbell Babbitt (Steve Coogan) is distraught to learn that an old college friend has recently committed suicide. Meanwhile, as Babbitt attempts to craft an unsung hero story about his old friend by gravitating toward the teacher's misfit students, local teacher (Molly Shannon) scrambles to cover up a looming scandal. When Babbitt discovers that the motley crew of teens is comprised of a self-absorbed seductress (Hilary Duff), a timid voyeur (Josh Peck), and a manipulative pregnant teen (Olivia Thirlby), he becomes obsessed with our need to create heroes where none exist. Over time, the roles are reversed and Babbitt learns that the traits he is currently projecting onto his fallen friend's students may in fact be traits possessed by he and other adults. A struggling farmer must choose between several desperate options in this period drama, set in Canada in the 1950s. Snit Mandolin (Keir Gilchrist) is a young man whose family emigrated to Canada when he was a boy; they were viewed with deep suspicion by their new neighbors in Saskatchewan, and when his parents died, Snit was sent to live in a group home where brutal violence was commonplace. Snit is released and returns to Saskatchewan to find that his Aunt Matilda (Gabrielle Rose) is the only person still living on the family's farm, and she's left the fields and the cattle in a deplorable state. Snit wants to turn the farm back into a going concern, but he needs money, something Matilda can't provide. Snit becomes reacquainted with Johnny (Alexander De Jordy), one of his few friends from childhood, and Johnny offers to help Snit make raise some cash by working for him. However, Johnny's business is making bootleg whiskey, and with local sheriff Roy Kane (John Pyper-Ferguson) looking for an excuse to drive Snit out of town, moonshining could cost him his farm as readily as neglect or the elements. In a 1950s-era alternate universe where domesticated zombies play a functional role in society by delivering the milk, carrying the mail, and even helping out with household chores, one boy is about to find out just how big of a personal responsibility "pet" ownership truly is. When the Earth passed through a cloud of space dust and the dead arose from their graves to devour the flesh of the living, it first seemed that all hope for humanity was lost. Society's rapid slide into chaos, however, was soon halted when scientists at a company called ZomCom created a special collar that turned the rampaging animated corpses docile. Now, thanks to ZomCom, everything is under control -- or is it? Timmy Robinson (K'Sun Ray) isn't quite convinced. Quiet and withdrawn, the skeptical young boy spends so much time locked away in his room that he's almost become invisible around the household. His mother Helen (Carrie-Anne Moss) has recently purchased a zombie to help keep things tidy around the house though, and when the creature attempts to engage the curious youngster in a game of catch, a friendship is forged between boy and zombie that finds the amiable gut-muncher nicknamed Fido (Billy Connolly) practically becoming a part of the family. Things take a turn for the worse however, when Fido's collar malfunctions and Timmy's neighbors begin dying in droves.
