A small-town boy hustling his way through the big city forms an uneasy alliance with a scam artist who inducts him into the violent world of bare-knuckle brawling in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints writer/director Dito Montiel's unforgiving urban action film. Arriving in New York City with little more than the shirt on his back, Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) makes ends meet by selling counterfeit goods on the street. But times are tough and money is short, and just as things are starting to look grim, Shawn crosses paths with crafty con artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard). Harvey instantly recognizes Shawn's natural talent for street fighting, and offers to help the uneasy newcomer make some quick cash on the bare-knuckle circuit. But making a living by brawling isn't easy because the system is hopelessly corrupt, and the only people who really come out on top are the rich businessmen who place wagers on the disposable fighters. Still, Harvey's instincts were right, and Shawn quickly makes a name for himself by taking down every opponent who crosses his path, including mixed martial arts champs, veteran pugilists, and ultimate fighters. As each bout becomes more intense, Shawn realizes that his only hope for escaping this dark world is to face his fiercest opponent to date. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Here in Orlando, Jake is considered something of a hothead thanks to his penchant for brawling. In an attempt to better fit in with his new classmates, Jake accepts flirtatious classmate Baja's (Amber Heard) invitation to a raucous party. There, the short-fused newcomer is lured into a fight and badly beaten by local bully Ryan McCarthy (Cam Gigandet). But a beam of hope shines through the humiliation when a classmate who sees potential in the defeated fighter informs Jake of a local MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) program run by Jean Roqua (Djimon Hounsou). Despite Jake's preconceived notions regarding MMA, he quickly discovers that it's not just another form of street fighting but a rich new art form that he longs to master. A more obvious culprit is the unorthodox Dr. Backer, but Buffy finds him dead. Meanwhile, Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) suspects that Jenny's (Robia La Morte) death might be causing Buffy to fabricate a creature to fight, but he soon uncovers the creature's identity as Der Kindestod, or "child death." Buffy reinfects herself with her fever to battle the monster because he can only be seen by those in the feverish state. For every success story in Hollywood, there are dozens, maybe hundreds of people who exist on the fringes in a kind of limbo. They have given up on participating in life outside "the business," but don't really have enough much going on to warrant that. In this movie, a group of four such men get together at a low-key club in the Los Angeles area to hash over their experiences. The current situation of each man is reported to the audience by a waitress at the club, who has a sharp eye for these matters, even if she is one of the men's girlfriend. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In Sarajevo, in the year 1914, a recently expelled seventeen-year-old Serbian schoolboy named Gavre Princip (Rueben Pillsbury) threw the bomb that killed the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. For reasons that are sometimes confusing even to scholars, the whole of Europe was soon embroiled in the conflict we now call World War I. This drama explores the life of the blond, blue-eyed "anarchist" and Serbian nationalist just before the fatal bombing, and it underscores not only the boy's motives for his deed, but the conditions endured by subjects of the empire. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
