Altitude 3200 refers to the above-sea-level elevation of the French mountain retreat where most of this film takes place. Jean-Louis Barrault plays an idealistic sandwich-board man who joins his equally high-minded friends on a weekend excursion. Their hopes for rest and relaxation are dashed when a group of young girls take refuge in their lodgings during a storm. Devoted to the concept of a perfect, utopian society, in which men and woman are equals, the girls talk the boys into forming such a society-at least for the duration of the weekend. But by the time Monday rolls around, everyone has come to the conclusion that they'll be better off returning to the "imperfect" real world. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Based on a story by Somerset Maugham, The Beachcomber was originally released in Great Britain as Vessel of Wrath. This English version was much franker--and much more fun--than the abbreviated, watered-down US release prints. Even the American version, however, is successful in capturing the spirit of Maugham's tale of slovenly remittance man Charles Laughton drinking and wenching away his monthly allowance in the picturesque Dutch Islands. Elsa Lanchester (the real-life Mrs. Laughton) plays the prim sister of sanctimonious missionary Tyrone Guthrie, who slowly regenerates the wastrelly Laughton. Our hero redeems himself fully through his courageous behavior during a cholera epidemic. This version of The Beachcomber is based on the stage adaptation by Bartlett Cormick; the 1955 remake, which played faster and looser with the Maugham original than the Cormack version did, starred Robert Newton, who plays the local British authority in the 1938 film. The Beachcomber was the only film directed by producer Erich Pommer, who spent most of the 1930s as Charles Laughton's business partner. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This tempestuous tropical romance was based on a novel by Mrs. Madelon Szekely-Lulofs. Set in Dutch Colonial Africa, the story focuses on John Van Laer (Fritz Van Dongen), the overseer of a vast rubber plantation. Van Laer's new wife Renee (Enny Meunier) joins him at the plantation, but the monotony of her existence, coupled with the unbearable heat, soon drives her to distraction. One of Van Laer's workmen takes advantage of the boss' absence to seduce Renee, resulting in her breakup with her husband. It takes an unexpected tragedy to bring the couple back together, though not necessarily happily ever after. Rubber works overtime to contrast the creature-comfort advantages of the rubber industry with the harsh realities of plantation life. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
