Christopher Mitchum Movies

The second son of actor Robert Mitchum, Christopher Mitchum began his own spotty film career in the late 1960s, after attending Dublin's Trinity College and earning a BA from the University of Arizona. Christopher looked and sounded nothing at all like his father, thereby avoiding unwarranted cries of "Nepotism!" from cynical critics. Like his brother Jim and his uncle John, Christopher found that his best screen opportunities were in westerns. He played supporting parts in a number of John Wayne pictures, including Rio Lobo (1969), Chisum (1970), Big Jake (1971). Though he prefers writing to acting, Christopher Mitchum continued showing up in theatrical and made-for-video action fare into the late 1980s; in 1993, he was nostalgically cast as a ranch hand in the all-star Wyatt Earp biopic Tombstone. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

When the FBI puts its war against terrorism into space, the terrorists fight back in this action drama. In an effort to more closely monitor the activities of underground militia groups, the U.S. government schedules the launch of a surveillance satellite designed specifically to keep tabs on domestic terrorists. The satellite is to be launched during NASA's next space shuttle mission; however, a militia group calling themselves the Diamondbacks have learned the location of the tracking station that monitors the shuttle's activities, and they stage an armed raid that effectively cuts off all communication between the shuttle, its crew, and NASA's tracking computers shortly after launch. FBI agent Frank Jenkins (Miles O'Keeffe) is sent in to take back the tracking station and insure the safety of the astronauts, but he soon discovers that not all of his associates can be trusted. Diamondbacks also features Timothy Bottoms, Chris Mitchum, and Ed Lottimer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A high-energy action adventure based on legend rather than historical fact finds Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) desiring to retire from law enforcement. With brothers Virgil (Sam Elliot) and Morgan (Bill Paxton), he arrives in Tombstone, Arizona intending to build his fortune. He discovers that long-time friend Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) is there and that the town is run by a group of brutal outlaws called the Cowboys. Earp, frustrated with his laudanum-addicted wife, begins a romance with traveling stage actress Josephine Marcus (Dana Delany). Meanwhile, the Cowboys terrorize the citizens of Tombstone unchecked.

When the town marshal is killed by a Cowboy, Earp steps in to prevent a lynching by an angry mob. He also refuses to hand the killer over to his fellows, beginning the enmity between the Cowboys and the Earp brothers. Virgil, overcome with guilt at doing nothing to help the Tombstone citizens, accepts the position of town marshal. With Wyatt and Morgan as his deputies, and the help of Doc, Virgil attempts to arrest several Cowboys, resulting in the famous OK Corral shoot-out. The Cowboys take revenge by ambushing two of the brothers and injuring Virgil and killing Morgan. The Earps leave town, apparently cowed. Wyatt returns, wearing the badge of a U.S. marshal, vowing to destroy every last Cowboy. He hunts them mercilessly, until the leader, Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) challenges Wyatt to a duel. While not regarded as an artistic masterpiece, "Tombstone" is considered the best of director George P. Cosmatos' prolific films. The all-star cast (including Thomas Haden Church and Billy Bob Thornton in small roles) delivers solid performances. Both William A. Fraker's cinematography and Bruce Broughton's stirring musical score are expertly designed for dramatic effect. Blood is shown liberally in several key scenes, but seems intended to show that there is nothing glorious in Wyatt Earp's actions, only necessity. He and his deputies take on the symbolism of the horsemen of the apocalypse -- dispensing judgement, and the Biblical references form a symmetry at the beginning and end of the film.

Higgins (John Hillerman) enthusiastically mounts a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado" to entertain his distinguished visitor Sir Cedric Brooke (Terence Knapp). Meanwhile, Magnum is hired by Sally DeForrest (Kay Lenz) to locate her brother Eric (Christopher Mitchum), who has apparently been spirited away by a religious cult. The two plotlines converge--or more accurately, collide--when Sally is invited to sing a major role in Higgins' operetta, thereby setting the stage (no pun intended) for a not-so-melodic political assassination. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Just for the record, an Executioner, Part 1 never existed. That the filmmakers would be too lazy to bother changing the title of this film should provide viewers with ample warning that they are about to watch a low-budget stinker. Perhaps meant as an experimental film with a dash of politics and two shakes of comedy, this ultimately unpalatable mix by noted director Alexandro Jodorowsky might have had too many cooks. Three people are cited as having had a hand in the story, written and rewritten three times. The tale itself follows the life of a young British colonial woman in India around 1900 or so and is based on a novel by Reginald Campbell. Rather than simply focus on the woman (Cyrielle Clair), the tale juxtaposes her life with that of an elephant named Tusk (convincingly played by Tusk, the elephant). The results are beautiful shots of the landscape unmatched by the mix of characters ranging from a Maharaja to a reverend to a few idiotic merchants and various types in-between. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The 2-part TV movie Rumor of War was based on the 1977 memoirs of Vietnam veteran Philip Caputo. Brad Davis stars as Caputo, who during the mid-1960s was a Marine lieutenant. In battle after battle, Caputo performs his duties admirably, even when questioning the wisdom of America's Vietnam involvement. As both the war and the body count escalate, Caputo suffers a nervous breakdown. A Rumor of War bears an inevitable resemblance to the much-earlier antiwar epic All Quiet on the Western Front, right down to the presence of a father-figure combat sergeant (Brian Dennehy). Its few cliches aside, the film is a powerful indictment of the brutalization and depersonalization of America's Vietnam forces. A Rumor of War premiered on September 24 and 25, 1980. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
