A Europol agent on the hunt for a serial killer gets some unexpected help from the prime suspect's temperamental twin brother in this thriller starring Timothy Hutton. They call him Pygmalion; he's a ruthless killer who catches his female victims off guard, murders them, and positions them in elaborate poses in a morbid attempt to show off his murderous handiwork. When another body turns up in Barcelona, Agent Tom Brindle (Hutton) is called in to crack the case. At first Agent Brindle suspects that a soldier named Marco Soler (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) is responsible for the killing spree. Then he learns that Marco has an estranged twin brother. Now, with Marco's help, Agent Brindle works to create a psychological profile of the killer. Meanwhile, Pygmalion discovers evidence of the twin he never knew about, and begins stalking the team in a malevolent bid to avoid getting caught. A man in his mid-twenties reveals an unusual attitude about love and mortality in this offbeat romantic drama. Ilan (Miguel Angel Silvestre) is a mathematician who has unique ideas about love -- he believes that a connection between two people is like a formula that's dependent on the right set of random integers falling into place. That doesn't stop Ilan and his pals Eric (Felix Gomez) and Andy (Juan Diaz) from spending their free time looking for the ideal woman, and one day when they're in a café and Ilan spies beautiful Lisa (Barbara Goenaga) playing his favorite song on the jukebox, he suspects he may have finally found the girl for him. However, not long after encountering the woman of his dreams, Ilan learns that he's contracted a virulent form of melanoma that can only be treated with radical chemotherapy. In first-time director Inaki Dorronsoro's explosive drama La Distancia (AKA The Distance, 2006), Miguel Angel Silvestre plays Daniel, and up-and-coming pugilist repeatedly on the verge of winning, but never quite able to cross the victory line. The frustrated Daniel commits a robbery that leads to incarceration. In jail, he meets Guillermo, a cop with suppressed gay urges and self-destructive impulses, who cons Daniel into committing a homicide in exchange for release. Daniel then emerges from confinement, ostensibly unscathed but racked and torn apart inside by guilt. He climbs back into the ring, but is horrified to discover that aggression and anger now guide his boxing maneuvers, and, to clear his conscience, decides to seek out the wife of the man he killed, who works as a prostitute in a local club. Helmer Santiago Tabernero's coming-of-ager Life in Color (AKA Vida y Color, 2005) paints an enduring, vivid portrait of life in a Spanish village in the late summer of 1975 - at a juncture when color televisions were on the verge of appearing in middle-class homes, and the lives of citizenry on the verge of dramatically improving thanks to the impending death of fascist Francisco Franco. Tabernero filters his tender, nostalgic story through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy, Fede (Junio Valverde), who lives in the hamlet of Las Islas with his sister Bego (Silvia Abascal), his mother Sole (Ana Wagener), his father Angel (Adolfo Fernandez) and his grandfather (portrayed by Joan Dalmau) - a man who saves a bottle of champagne to gear up for the ensuing celebration of Franco's death. The sweet-natured Fede must contend with almost constant bullying by the punk Benito, and spends the majority of his extracurricular time with two friends: the quiet, introverted Sara (Nadia de Santiago) and her Down's-afflicted sister, Ramona (Natalia Abascal) - both victims of a mentally unstable, issue-ridden father. Tabernero sets about interweaving several stories of life in the village - the most intense of which involves the mysterious disappearance of a young girl from Las Islas. As lensed by ace cinematographer Jose Luis Alcane, the picture expressionistically projects the aesthetic overtones (bright, intense colors) of Fede's imagination onto the film's settings. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
