Maulik Pancholy Movies
A graduate of Yale Drama School, character actor Maulik Pancholy became a familiar face on sitcoms and prime-time dramas during the mid- to late 2000s -- nearly always in a recurring or guest acting capacity -- and ushered in occasional bit parts in features. He netted particularly substantial recognition for his ongoing turn as Jack Donaghy's (Alec Baldwin) loyal and slightly high-strung personal assistant, Jonathan, on the Tina Fey/Lorne Michaels-produced NBC sitcom 30 Rock, and for his portrayal of pot dealer Sanjay on Weeds. Cinemagoers might also associate Pancholy with his appearance as Will Smith's overeager doorman in the romantic comedy Hitch. In 2008, Pancholy appeared as Trent opposite Katherine Heigl and James Marsden in the Anne Fletcher-directed romantic comedy 27 Dresses. After Season 2 concluded with GE exec Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) accepting a post with the Bush administration, Season 3 kicks off with his return to the company and swift climb back to his old post. Unlucky-in-love Liz thinks she's finally found the perfect man in handsome pediatrician Drew Baird (Jon Hamm). But she soon discovers Drew has been "living in the bubble," thinking the world revolves around him because he can always get by on his looks. A single woman envies the security of her married friends, while they in turn dream of her freedom in this comedy drama. Olivia (Jennifer Aniston) is a single woman in her mid-thirties who feels she's reached a crossroads in her life. Unhappy with her career as a teacher, Olivia quits and takes a job as a maid until she sorts out her feelings. However, Olivia feels as if she could use some support, both personal and financial, from her best friends, all of whom at very least have more in the bank than she does. The lauded laugher's inaugural season introduces the offbeat staffers at "The Girlie Show," a TV variety program produced at venerable Rockefeller Center in New York City. Presiding over the show is TV scribe Liz Lemon (series creator and writer Tina Fey). But trouble looms upon the arrival of brash new honcho Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), the head of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming. Jack incessantly meddles with the series, hiring edgy but wildly erratic star Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) and changing the show's name to the desperately hip "TGS With Tracy Jordan." All this exasperates Lemon and pushes the show's horrified starlet, Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski), to the sidelines. Not only does Jack creep into the writers' room and even appear as a sketch performer (only to plug products), but he referees Lemon's sour romantic life. He sets her up on a blind date (with a woman); interferes with her bumpy reunion with her boorish ex-boyfriend Dennis (Dean Winters); and intervenes as her love blooms for affable paramour Floyd (Jason Sudeikis). Love is on the horizon for Jack, too. He dates a Bush administration official; tangles with his ex-wife (Isabella Rossellini); and woos an auctioneer (Emily Mortimer). But Jack still has time for territorial warfare against his gravelly voiced archnemesis Devin Banks (Will Arnett), a Left Coast network exec who callously eyes Jack's job. Always an omnipresent figure is naive man-child Kenneth the Page (Jack McBrayer), whose misadventures include switching roles with bigwig Jack, scoring a prime spot in Tracy's posse and trying to help the pampered Tracy reach spiritual self-actualization. The first season finale of Weeds is chock full of incident. Heylia (Tonye Patano) finds out that Conrad (Romany Malco) was responsible for beating up the campus security guard and bars him from speaking to Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker). She's also not very receptive to his plans to start growing their own hydroponic plants. Vaneeta (Indigo) goes into labor. Andy (Justin Kirk) finds out that the U.S. military expects him to report for duty...in Iraq, and doesn't get much sympathy from those around him. Lupita (Renee Victor) tells him, "Bye!" Doug (Kevin Nealon) offers to "put one of those little yellow ribbon stickers on my car. For you." Desperate times call for desperate measures. Peter (Martin Donovan) stops by the "fakery," and invites Nancy over to his house while his son is away. She tells him, "My life's not gonna get any less complicated any time soon," but he doesn't seem to want to give up. Isabelle (Allie Grant) and her little friend Peggy (Olivia Sui) experiment with lesbianism, while Celia (Elizabeth Perkins), feeling much better, thanks, is reverting back to her old, hypercritical ways. "When you think you're gonna die," Isabelle tells her, "you're a much better person." A stoned Silas (Hunter Parrish) is brought home by the cops and doesn't want to hear his mother's criticism; he's all too aware of how she maintains the family's comfortable lifestyle. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
