Guy Marchand Movies
The slightly ruddy-faced, très-Gallic actor
Guy Marchand chalked up an impressive resumé of supporting roles for himself, beginning in the early '70s. In nearly every instance,
Marchand evinced a sharp, heightened aptitude for supporting five-star French actors onscreen -- everyone from
Bernadette Lafont and
Charles Denner to
Philippe Noiret and
Isabelle Huppert. In fact, even if
Marchand's name may not be instantly recognizable to American viewers, his resumé reads like a best-of list of French "international crossover" features from the 1970s and '80s:
Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me (
Truffaut, 1972);
Cousin Cousine (
Jean-Charles Tacchella, 1975);
Coup de Torchon (
Bertrand Tavernier, 1981), and many, many other acclaimed films were graced with his presence. More recently,
Marchand worked for
Christophe Honoré, alongside
Romain Duris and
Louis Garrel, on the chamber drama
Inside Paris (2006).
Marchand also appeared with
Catherine Deneuve in the haunting, slightly menacing psychological drama
Après Lui (2007). ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Two people fleeing different sorts of danger find one another in this screwball romantic comedy from France. Danny (Edouard Baer) is a professional magician who has been struggling to find work and has somehow managed to get on the wrong side of his emotionally unstable brother-in-law Max (Joey Starr). With Max eager to hurt him, Danny decides to leave town, and drops his aging and senile mother (Bulle Ogier) off at a mental hospital, where he meets Sonia (Mélanie Bernier), who seems a bit too interested in the opposite sex. As Danny hits the road, he picks up an attractive hitchhiker, Irène (Nathalie Baye), who is carrying a large purse and gets frequent phone calls from men Danny assumes are her current or former lovers. But Danny doesn't know the half of Irène's story -- she's the paramour of a powerful politician (Guy Marchand) who has become involved in an illegal deal to sell arms to North Korea, and Irène is carrying both the politician's cash and evidence of his wrongdoings. Irène is also involved with a well-connected Korean gentleman (Park Jung-hak) and is dodging calls from both her lovers as she and Danny motor away in search of relative safety, and it isn't long before the traveling companions become attracted to one another. Passe-Passe (aka Off and Running) also stars Maurice Bénichou, Sandrine Le Berre, and Hippolyte Girardot. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Screen legend Catherine Deneuve stars as a grieving mother who forms an unusual relationship with the former best friend of her recently departed son in director Gaël Morel's melancholy drama. When Camille (Denuve)'s son was killed in a car accident, the devastating loss proved too much for emotionally fragile mother to bear. Now desperately clinging to any reminder of the son she held so close to her heart, Camille becomes increasingly fixated on Frank (Thomas Dumerchez) - the young man who was not only her child's best friend, but the one who was responsible for the tragic accident that took his life as well. At first, Frank is receptive to Camille's advances. It's not long, however, before the pair's scandalous relationship prompts many of Camille's friends to distance themselves from the increasingly unstable woman. Later, as Camille's obsession with Frank turns menacing, the relationship between grief-stricken mother and her guilt-ridden lover begins to take on ominous undertones. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

French sex symbols Romain Duris and Louis Garrel join screen icons Guy Marchand and Marie-France Pisier in writer-director Christophe Honoré's four-character chamber drama Dans Paris (Inside Paris). Duris plays Paul, a young man in his early thirties who splits with his girlfriend. Feeling depressed, he opts to move into a flat with his brother Jonathan (Garrel, who also narrates) and their father (Marchand). The ladykiller Jonathan slyly attempts to talk Paul into a shopping trip to lift his spirits, but ends up venturing out alone and engages in rendezvous with several women. Meanwhile, the boys' stylishly-dressed and gorgeous mother (Pisier) turns up and adds one more complexity to the network of relationships in the house. Honoré laces his drama with comedic touches and crafts the film in the gentle mode of early sixties French pictures by Truffaut, Godard and others. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

In this broad farce from French director Jean-Marie Poire, a Parisian must scramble to save his house, marriage and livelihood -- all having been threatened as a result of his own dishonesty. Georges' (Philippe Chevallier) troubles began while vacationing in Italy with his hot young mistress Emmanuelle (Alice Evans) when she discovered he has a wife and his only source of income is an allowance from his mother-in-law (Stephane Audran) -- both facts Georges had gone out of his way to conceal. With the trip ruined, the pair returns home to Paris where Georges discovers his mother-in-law's intentions of selling the swanky apartment he and his wife live in. Soon, the adulterous Frenchman must fend off prospective buyers, a very vindictive Emmanuelle and her freakishly virile and extremely jealous boyfriend (Gotz Otto) -- with the unexpected assistance of Maurice (Regis Laspales), a man he ran into on the street. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

This sumptuous French drama offers episodes from the notorious life of 18th century socialite and playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. The story begins in the 1770s with a rehearsal of his "The Barber of Seville." Young friend of Voltaire, Philipp Gudin introduces himself to the great playwright and offers to become his personal secretary. He then becomes the adventurous Beaumarchais' keeper as the author gets involved in a variety of situations including a duel with an angry husband, his battle with the corrupt French government and a serious long-term affair with Marie-Theres de Willer. It all comes to a climax when King Louis XV assigns the playwright a secret mission to London. There he must find and retrieve a damning document from transvestite aristocrat Chevalier D'Eon. Unfortunately, Beaumarchais gets tangled up with supporting American rebels and ends up tossed in jail. Louis XVI sees that he is finally released and then the writer becomes an arms smuggler for American revolutionaries. All of his activities bankrupt him and so Beaumarchais must return to writing plays. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

A "ripoux" is, in French slang, a policeman who accepts bribes, shakes down "honest" criminals for a cut of their action, at a level which can range from the familiar (U.S.) paradigm of accepting free donuts, to serious criminal activity. This comic police thriller is a sequel to the hugely successful 1984 film Philippe Noiret and Thierry Lhermitte about a pair of Parisian policemen, one an old, experienced "ripoux" and the other one an idealistic new-kid-on-the-block type, who has to be shown the ropes (and mildly corrupted) by the older man. In this story, Noiret's young partner is having misgivings about his misdeeds, and in any case wants to try for a promotion to police commissioner. What with one thing and another, this leads to both men being ignominiously transferred to another beat, to the (temporary) jubilation of the people they've been sponging off of for years. It turns out that the new cops on their old beat are far less helpful and easygoing than they were, and soon the denizens of their Montmartre district beat are beating on the doors of city hall begging for their return. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This gentle, mildly satiric French comedy follows the romantic adventures of a group of men who have gone with their children to spend the summer in their vacation homes on the Atlantic coast. Some of the men are divorced, some still married, but all are open to meeting new women while their wives and girlfriends are back in Paris. Much of the humor derives from the reversal of the usual situation - - the men are off with the children while the women are back home tied to work and career. The film is loosely structured and episodic as it simultaneously follows the stories of a number of characters. Particularly engaging in the large cast are Michel Robin as an eccentric publisher with a avidly jealous wife and Helene Vincent as a frumpy divorcee constantly on the prowl for a new mate. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This French/Canadian "caper" comedy stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as an oh-so-clever bank robber. This is a rather complex thriller that fails to deliver very much suspense or fear, in spite of the requisite shock scenes and mystery over who is perpetrating them. The story opens with a pending marriage, tragically aborted when the groom dies under suspicious circumstances, and continues several years later when Nathalie (Carole Laure), a single mother, receives "breather" phone calls and finds the bloody heart of an animal on her car seat. That is followed by another such donation sent to her workplace and labeled as the heart of her little daughter. Although gruesome, these incidents alone are not enough to create an atmosphere of foreboding, anxiety, or apprehension -- as Nathalie seems just a few steps from unconcerned. If she is not affected, any tension created by the scenario is diffused, leaving the audience in neutral. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
