A photogenic young actor whose successful modeling career no-doubt helped to set him at ease in front of the camera before he was bitten by the acting bug, handsome Alex Pettyfer had essayed only one role on the screen before being launched into what has been referred to by some as the most physically demanding performance for a young actor ever attempted -- the role of teenage super-spy Alex Rider in the high-flying 2006 adventure Stormbreaker. Pegged by industry insiders as the next Brad Pitt thanks to a winning combination of good looks and promising talent, the rising star appeared in widely seen advertising campaigns for such well-known companies as The Gap before following actor father Richard Pettyfer to the silver screen. Educated as a border student at Shiplake College in Oxfordshire, England, Alex commuted between his school and his Windsor home while completing his secondary education. The procurement of an L.A. agent quickly resulted in the casting of Pettyfer in a British ITV production of Tom Brown's Schooldays, a fateful turn which found the burgeoning actor developing much the same relationship with co-star Stephen Fry off screen as his character shared with Fry's friendly but bemused headmaster onscreen. A curse transforms a handsome and arrogant young man into everything he detests in this contemporary retelling of Beauty and the Beast. When Kyle invites his misfit classmate Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen) to an environmental rally at their school, she questions his motivations but reluctantly accepts. Later, Kyle blows Kendra off, prompting the spurned goth girl to cast a dark spell on the swaggering egotist. The spell causes Kyle to transform into an unsightly creature that strikes fear into the heart of everyone he meets, and the only way to reverse it is for him to find someone who can love him for who he is on the inside. Subsequently sent by his repulsed father to live in Brooklyn, Kyle forges a tenuous friendship with his kindly housekeeper (Lisa Gay Hamilton) and his blind tutor (Neil Patrick Harris). When Kyle witnesses a drug addict in a desperate struggle with a menacing dealer, he intervenes, promising to protect the addict under the condition that his beautiful daughter, Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens), comes to live with the unsightly recluse in his sprawling Brooklyn home. Following the suicide of a bullied classmate - overweight, asthmatic Darren Mullett (Calvin Dean) - Justine tries to wheedle her way into the "in crowd," whose members are every bit as snotty and obnoxious as she is, and strikes up a torrid affair with Alexis (Dimitri Leonidas), the most popular boy in class. The unhinged behavior of a Malibu princess (Emma Roberts) prompts her frustrated father to send her to an all-girls English boarding school in this teen comedy penned by Lucy Dahl (daughter of Roald Dahl and a boarding school alumni herself) and directed by Nick Moore. Poppy is a bratty, self-absorbed 16-year-old whose pampered L.A. childhood has left her with a notable sense of self entitlement. Showered with unlimited-balance credit cards and constantly flanked by a horde of hangers-on, the ill-mannered Poppy loudly lets her parents know just how frustrated she is with her current family situation. When Poppy pulls a prank that goes further over the top than she originally intended, however, her frustrated father (Aidan Quinn) decides that it's high time his spoiled daughter understands the true concept of discipline and sends her off to boarding school in England. Upon arriving at her new school, American princess Poppy is taken aback to learn that she must follow the rules laid out by the stern matrons in charge, be in bed by curfew, and of course take part in mandatory lacrosse matches. While Poppy is at first confident that she can contend with any and all of these stifling lifestyle changes without due concern, there's one variable that hasn't factored into her self-centered equation -- her classmates. Now, as Poppy begins to realize that her British classmates simply won't tolerate her self-centered ways, she reluctantly admits defeat while vowing to shake up her stuffy school as she makes the transition from reckless youth to refined lady.
