Hollywood actress Janice Logan (best known for her work in 1940's Dr. Cyclops) heads the cast of the Mexican musical Hotel de Verano (Summer Hotel). Logan plays an American lass who is all set to marry wealthy widower Enrique Herrara. Having been promised in marriage to Herrara as a child, our heroine is none too keen on the arrangement, but she intends to go through with the union for her father's sake. The plot thickens when Logan falls in love with a handsome radio singer. Largely filmed on location in Acapulco, Hotel de Verano was directed by Rene Cardona, a competent workhorse who tackled everything from romantic comedy to horror films. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The first Technicolor horror film since Mystery of the Wax Museum, Dr. Cyclops was directed by Ernest Schoedsack, of King Kong fame. Albert Dekker chews the scenery as mad scientist Dr. Thorkel, who has developed a process that will shrink human beings to doll size. His first victims include mining engineers Bill Stockton (Thomas Coley) and Steve Baker (Victor Kilian) and biologists Mary Mitchell (Janice Logan) and Dr. Bullfinch (Charles Halton). At first willing to play-act the role of benevolent despot with his miniaturized captives, Thorkel reveals the more sinister side of his personality by abruptly murdering Bullfinch in cold blood (easily the film's most frightening sequence). The rest of the picture details the escape efforts of the three pint-sized protagonists as they hack their way through a jungle of gigantic foliage and do battle with oversized wildlife. Though the cheery Technicolor hues tend to dilute the "scare" quotient in Dr. Cyclops, the special effects are superbly convincing throughout. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This zany comedy-mystery gets under way when wiseguy reporter Jimmie Daniels (Robert Paige) and tipsy sports editor Buzz Nelson (Charlie Ruggles) become joint owners of an oversized truck. Examining the contents, Jimmie and Buzz discover that the trunk contains a dead body. When mystery woman Margaret Nichols (Janice Logan) shows up to claim the trunk for herself, she is immediately suspected of murder. It turns out, however, that Margaret is an insurance investigator, tracking down a fortune in stolen loot. Forced to go on the lam from the cops, Jimmie and Margaret take refuge in the country home of daffy scientist Jarvis Woodruff (Lawrence Grossmith), where the mystery of the troublesome body is finally solved. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this comedy drama, young high school student Henry Aldrich tries to tone down his natural mischievousness and shuck the reputation of being the worst student in school. It isn't easy and his father, who was an excellent student at Princeton, doesn't help. Fortunately, by the story's end, the young man is able to overcome all obstacles and prove himself. Following this film, the character of Henry Aldrich became popular and so several subsequent films were made around him. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Undercover Doctor, like the other entries in Paramount's "FBI" series, could lay claim to being "drawn from today's headlines." The film was loosely based on the career of Dr. Joseph P. Moran, who violated the ethics of his profession by tending to the gunshot wounds of gangster Eddie Krator (Broderick Crawford) and his cronies without reporting those wounds to the police. J. Carrol Naish plays Dr. Bartley Morgan, who covers up his profitable illegalities with the respectable veneer of a posh, highly profitable private practice. FBI agent Robert Anders (Lloyd Nolan) is surprisingly slow on the uptake, never catching on to Morgan's illicit activities until the film is three-quarters over. Heather Angel costars as a socialite who doesn't pick her friends too well, while Janice Logan, future costar of Paramount's Dr. Cyclops, fills the nominal heroine role as Dr. Morgan's nurse. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
