Actor Morgan Freeman portrays anti-apartheid activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela in this Clint Eastwood-helmed political drama adapted from author John Carlin's book The Human Factor: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed the World. Set just after the fall of apartheid and during Mandela's first term in office, The Human Factor explores how the political prisoner-turned-president used the 1995 Rugby World Cup -- which was hosted by South Africa -- as a means of bringing blacks and whites together after decades of violence and mistrust. Matt Damon co-stars in the Warner Bros. production as rugby player Francois Pienaar. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A dark-skinned girl born to white South African parents attempts to explore her identity in the era of apartheid as her government, her parents, and society as a whole struggle with what it means to be a black child of Caucasian descent in a nation deeply divided by race. The year is 1955. Sandra Laing (Sophie Okonedo) has just been born to a pair of white Afrikaner parents, her brown skin and curly hair the surprising result of genetic throwback. As the government's rigid apartheid system struggles with whether to classify Sandra as white or black, the young girl and her parents gradually realize that the complications they face due to her appearance run deep and wide. Sandra lives in a society where the color of your skin determines the outcome of your life, and though she is eventually granted admission to an all-white school, she suffers endless torment from her intolerant classmates. Her father, Abraham (Sam Neill), is having a particularly difficult time accepting his daughter. Despite the fact that tests indicate he is her biological father, the neighbors constantly whisper behind their backs. And while Sandra's mother (Alice Krige) does her best to provide her daughter with understanding and emotional support, those consolations come at a high price for both mother and daughter. Her parents believe it's their daughter's birthright that she live as a white woman, though only after she grows up and falls in love with a black man will the conflicted Sandra finally find the strength to embrace her true identity as an African woman. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The citizens of London must grapple with one of the greatest environmental crises in British history, and the possible obliteration of the city itself, in Flood, a natural disaster opus from director Tony Mitchell (Supervolcano). In present day England, a colossal storm hits the North Atlantic Ocean just outside of the UK and moves toward the Scotch mainland, laying waste to the town of Wick. Some predict that the crisis will die off; not so Professor Leonard Morrison (Tom Courtenay of Billy Liar), who worked arduously on the Thames River barrier. Morrison presciently foresees the system moving across the Thames barrier, where it will gain added strength from the year's unusually high tide and inundate London with a wall of water. In desperation, Leonard contacts daughter-in-law Sam (Jessalyn Gilsig), Director of Operations for the barrier, and warns her of the impending destruction; Sam's estranged husband (and Leonard's son) Rob (Robert Carlyle), who is employed as an engineer on the Barrier, and Police Commissioner Patricia Nash (Joanne Whalley) also become involved. As the water hits - just as predicted - these officials declare a city-wide state of emergency and must take extreme measures to keep the pending disaster from spiraling out of control and claiming untold numbers of lives . ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Placed in solitary confinement, with his wife and family brutalized by government agent Nic Vos (Tim Robbins), the young family man is eventually cleared of charges, but his life is in shambles. Devastated and distraught, Patrick soon begins working as a rebel fighter and political operative for Nelson Mandela's African National Congress. Filmmaker Mark Bamford explores issues of race, class, and faith in contemporary South Africa against a witty backdrop in this comedy drama. Kate (Debbie Brown) runs an animal shelter that seems to attract as many human misfits and cast-offs as dogs and cats; still dealing with the emotional fallout of being abandoned by her father as a girl, Kate welcomes both two- and four-legged friends into her shelter, but isn't quite so open with her heart, and is looking for true love after a series of busted marriages. Jean-Claude (Eriq Ebouaney) is a scientist exiled from West Africa who works at the shelter to make ends meet; while his political and economic fortunes have hit the bricks, his spirit has not, and he has a knack for charming kids, women, and vicious dogs. Lindiwe (Nthati Moshesh) is a single mother attempting to support her son and finish her education after the death of her husband, both against steep odds. Dr. Morne (Morne Visser) is a veterinarian who has also lost his spouse, and seems to carry a torch for Kate. And Habib (David Isaacs) and Sharifa (Quanita Adams) are a couple whose marriage of eight years is on the verge of collapse due to her inability to conceive, testing both their patience and their faith. A vicious shark terrorizes the New Jersey shore in this tale of terror at the beach starring Colin Egglesfield and John Rhys-Davies and based on the actual events that inspired Peter Benchley's Jaws. The year was 1916 and the citizens of New Jersey dared not step in the water for fear of meeting a grim fate in the jaws of a great white shark. For 12 days, the bloodthirsty beast would stalk the normally serine shores of New Jersey awaiting the next victim to tempt fate by taking a swim, and as the most sustained series of shark attacks in recorded history shook an entire community, the power of the perfect predator proved that humankind isn't always at the top of the food chain. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

In this drama, a South African exile returns to his homeland to find that justice hasn't brought peace. Vusi Madlazi (Ice Cube) is a student and political activist living in San Francisco; he was born in South Africa, but his connection to anti-apartheid rebels made his family fear for his life, so he was sent to the United States, where he's been ever since. When he attends his father's funeral, Vusi visits South Africa for the first time since the fall of apartheid and Nelson Mandela's rise to power. However, he discovers that not all the changes in his country have been for the better; drugs and gang violence have begun to overtake Soweto, and his older brother, once a dedicated anti-apartheid activist, isn't sure what to do with his life now that the changes he fought for have come. Vusi's mother asks a favor before he returns to America; his younger brother Steven (Eric Miyeni) has run away, and she wants Vusi to look for him. While searching for Steven, Vusi meets his brother's girlfriend Karin (Elizabeth Hurley), who works as an exotic dancer. It turns out that both Karin and Steven have become addicted to crack, and Steven's disappearance is probably linked to a $15,000 debt he owes to crime kingpin Muki (Ving Rhames). Director Darrell J. Roodt's previous film was Cry the Beloved Country (1995), the first major film produced in South Africa after the collapse of apartheid. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
